Stags chairman unhappy with Shrews over Wilson death

STAGS chairman Keith Haslam was unhappy with the attitude of opponents Shrewsbury Town to the death of Mansfield's new goalkeeping coach Peter Wilson this afternoon.
Wilson collapsed and died during a pre-match warm-up at Gay Meadow and the match was eventually postponed just before kick-off.
But Haslam said: "Shrewsbury wanted the match to go ahead but we felt quite strongly it should be suspended because of the circumstances and a mark of respect to the family concerned.
"I believe the supporters in the ground took it very well and applauded the decision to call the game off.
"But I was disappointed in Shrewsbury's reaction. They wanted to play and said life must go on which I thought was a bit callous.
"It had a dramatic effect when your two goalkeepers were training with Peter and then suddenly had to try to revive him.
"But Shrewsbury just said leave it another 10 minutes and see if they feel any differently which disappoints me."
Wilson had only joined the club 10 days earlier and Haslam added: "It is a bit awkward as I only really met him the once.
"He is a friend of Peter Shirtliff and he asked if he could bring him to the club as goalkeeping coach and I agreed.
"I didn't get the chance to build a relationship with him."

The League Paper:

Mansfield Chairman Keith Haslam hit out at complaints from some Shrewsbury officials, who he claimed wanted the game to go ahead. He said "It was an awful situation but I was disappointed by Shrewsbury's reaction of wanting to play the match. They said life must go on. I think that is a bit callous myself. It had a dramatic effect on our two keepers, who suddenly found themselves trying to revive their coach. Shrewsbury view was that we should leave it ten minutes to see if they felt any different about it."
----
Town's new Secretary John Howarth denied the claims saying the club fully supported the decision not to play the match. "We're all very sympathetic," said Howarth, "It's the first time that we have ever experienced this and the referee has taken the decision and we have to concur with that. The Chairman told me the decision got a round of applause from the supporters so they obviously have the same feelings."
