SHIRTLIFF ARRIVES WHILE PALMER REFLECTS
22nd June 2005 23:49

mansfieldtown.net:
The long awaited Peter Shirtliff walked through the doors at Field Mill this morning bringing with him a wealth of coaching experience that should help the Stags achieve the promotion which was so cruelly robbed from them the last two years.

His first task as first team coach was to put his squad through their paces prior to the pre-season weigh in.

Shirtliff has already tasted promotion as a coach with Barnsley and Leicester City so will hopefully bring some of the same to Mansfield town FC this season.

"I am delighted to have Peter Shirtliff here with me, things are going to change at the club this year which will give people a lot to cheer about.

"I have known Peter for a long time he is a very good coach, we played together in a very successful side for a number of years, we both believe in discipline off and on the pitch, we believe in standards and as a coach he has experienced promotion twice with Barnsley and at Leicester. I believe that we will work very well together" said Palmer.

"I am looking forward to working with Carlton but I am also looking forward to the challenge of coaching Mansfield and hopefully promotion.

"I have seen Mansfield play when I have been scouting players in the past so I know a little bit about the club but I have known Carlton for years. At Barnsley we achieved promotion to the premiership when Danny Wilson was manager and the same at Leicester under Mickey Adams. So I hope that I am a bit of a good luck charm." Shirtliff told the official website.

Peter describes himself as a calm, thoughtful person and a coach that finds the happy medium between balling players out and a coach that will step back a bit and take a look at the technical side but does admit that from time to time his emotions get the better of him.

Taking about his new gaffer he said:

"Carlton is very enthusiastic and passionate about the game, where as I tend to look at the game a little bit colder. And I believe that as we are different characters we should gel together to make a good team"

BBC Nottingham online:
It's been a busy day of transfer activity at Field Mill. And many Mansfield Town fans will be reeling at the news that goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington has joined League two neighbours and rivals Notts County. 31-year -old Pilkington has been stalling for some time over a new deal at Field Mill so the fact that he's left Mansfield doesn't really come as a surprise. What has come out of the blue is that he's become Gudjon Thordarson's first signing at Notts County. Pilkington had been with the Stags for five years, during which time he made almost 200 appearances and was captain of the team that reached the play-off final in 2004. He's agreed a two year deal at Meadow Lane, and will join the Magpies on July 1st when his Mansfield contract expires. Also on his way out of Field Mill is experienced midfielder Tom Curtis - it's thought he could be on his way to Chester City to join former boss Keith Curle. Current manager Carlton Palmer is also close to completing a package for left back Adam Eaton to leave the club. The consolation for Stags supporters is that Palmer has confirmed that Wycombe defender Gus Uhlenbeek, former Arsenal striker Adam Birchall, and Bolton full back Jason Talbot have all completed moves to Field Mill today. Uhlenbeek and Talbot have agreed to one year deals, while Birchall will stay at Field Mill until 2007.

Carlton Palmer reflecting on his first signings of the summer told how he wants to achieve a balance between youth and experience for his 2005/06 team.

"I want to get a balance between youth and experience. And that Is why my first signings were Gus Uhlenbeek (1 year) and Adam Birchall (2 years). Gus is a fit lad and he can play a variety of positions and Adam is a young striker with lots of potential and pace. I am delighted to have both these players with Gus refusing a contract offer from Wycombe and Adam turning down a deal at Arsenal to come here." He said.

"Adam is a player that we have kept tabs on throughout last season. The chairman and I spoke about this and we agreed that if you sign players that have played in the basement division for four or five years that is about the level that they are so we set our sights from the higher divisions and attempted to attract the younger players from Premiership clubs where they have not perhaps been offered the opportunity to get first team football but they have had the good schooling and we are delighted that Adam chose to come here instead of staying at Arsenal and hopefully he will do very well."

Another new face in today is that of Jason Talbot (1 year) who joins us from Bolton Wanderers. Supporters will remember the defender who made two good appearances for us last season before having to go back to Bolton with an abscess on his toe.

"Jason did brilliant for us during his loan spell, unfortunately he picked up an injury and the loan was cut short but he has the right attitude and wants to do well, he is more than capable of playing at a higher level than this. He proved that already going to Derby on loan and playing a few good games there and will make a great addition to the squad" Palmer Said.

Palmer is bracing himself for four more players to arrive at Field Mill on Monday next week.
