FTYBR ON SALE ON SATURDAY
15th April 2005 11:02

Issue 58 of Follow the Yellow Brick Road goes on sale on Saturday before the game against Darlington. It will be on sale from 1.30 pm onwards at the ground, and also in the SSA bar and at The Talbot. Read all about it below.

The highlight of the latest bumper 52 page issue is an in-depth interview with manager Carlton Palmer. Read all about Carlton Palmer's thoughts on his career as a player, his highlights and his regrets (such as not joining Aston Villa), his England career, his memories of losing to the Stags for Leeds in 1994, and much more. Then read about what really happened at Stockport. Palmer goes on to talk in detail about how he came to help out at Field Mill, how he got to know Keith Haslam, and also reveals how he helped Keith Curle get the job at Mansfield in the first place. Then Palmer talks about his side's chances of promotion next season, about the qualities of the players at the club such as Richie Barker, Alex John-Baptiste, Jake Buxton, and explains in detail why Adam Murray left the club.

Here is a snippet of the discussion about Adam Murray:
Carlton - Adam is a great player but he is inconsistent. He has had some problems in the past, I understand that. His mental state goes up and down but there is no doubting his ability. I offered him a contract and asked him, “Can you guarantee what I am asking of you next year?” And he said, “No!”
Steve - What were you asking of him?
Carlton - Was his mental state going to be right all of the time and would he be physically fit all the time. That is the player's own responsibility, not mine. I could get fitness blokes in and do whatever but nobody tells Alex John-Baptiste to go to the gym every Tuesday and Thursday night or Bucko to go and do it, they choose to do it and that is why they do what they do do. So I asked him if I could rely on him and he said, “No!” I think at that point he had already spoken to Carlisle and had got himself a contract set up, so good luck to him. I wish him all the best, but I know with that type of attitude, he'll not play at the highest level because I know what it takes to play at the highest level and I've been around people that have played at the highest level and ability is not enough. And he has got the ability to play at the highest-level but…
Steve - Do you think that one of Adam Murray's faults was at times he tried to do too much when a simple pass may have been the best option?
Carlton - Correct. …
