PALMER PLEASED WITH PERFORMANCE
Evening Post, 26 March 2005

Stags boss Carlton Palmer believes his side deserved a win last night.

"I was very pleased with our performance," he said. "With a bit of luck and better end product we would have won it.

"We passed the ball well, got into good positions and dominated the game.

"We had a lot of the ball and you worry a little if you are getting into good positions and not scoring, but overall we did well. Sometimes we just need a bit of a break.

"Chester slowed the game down, but our final ball wasn't good enough at times. We played some good football.

"Giles Coke was outstanding and Adam Rundle did well, but he came off late on with a bit of a sore groin.

"We missed Colin Larkin. He picked up a dead leg before the game and I think if he'd been in the side we would have beaten Chester.

"It's about improving. We closed the ball down well and Chester had no answer to us. I'll continue to get on with my job and we'll continue to play and compete and ultimately we'll win games."

PALMER PHILOSOPHICAL AFTER DRAW

Manager Carlton Palmer expressed his delighted at Mansfield's performance - but also his slight disappointment at the 0-0 draw with Chester.

He said: "I was very pleased with our overall performance. We passed the ball well and deserved to win.

"Our final ball could be better but that will come. When you have as much of the ball as we did and don't score it can be worrying but sometimes you need a break.

"Chester tried to slow the game down, which was very frustrating and the referee did nothing about it.

"These are young lads who are learning and they will get better. If we'd had Colin Larkin fit we would have won.

"I just wish we could have scored a couple of goals for the fans. If we'd have got one we'd have got three or four."

Ian Rush was delighted as Chester continue to battle their way to League Two safety.

The Stags had the greater possession, but City created the better chances and Rush said: "The most important thing was to keep a clean sheet and we did that.

"Once we got to grips with their 4-5-1 system, which we sorted out at half-time, I thought we looked organised. Mansfield had a lot of possession but couldn't do anything with it.

"In the second half, if there was to have been a winner it would have been us and we had two good chances. The team worked their socks off and you can't ask for anything more.

"Ryan Lowe had an excellent debut for us. He gave us something different and was very unlucky not to score."
