New Oldham boss Ronnie Moore is close to making Paul Warne his first signing at Boundary Park.
With the Latics struggling at the wrong end of the League One table and crippled by injuries, Moore is looking to make an immediate impact.
It seems likely that he will return to former club Rotherham to take Warne on a month's loan, but this deal will not be completed until after this weekend's game with Port Vale.
''We won't get Paul Warne in time for Saturday because they are a bit short at the moment and might need him to be involved,'' Moore told the Oldham Evening Chronicle.
''But hopefully it will happen next week, and he's the sort of player who could become a favourite with our fans.
''I know the lad very well. He plays wide right or through the middle and his game is all about energy, energy, energy.''
Moore has also surmised that his squad lacks balance down the right flank, a situation he is anxious to rectify in the not too distant future.
''Yesterday was my first day at the club, but I spent all afternoon ringing managers because I want to get somebody in before weekend,'' he continued.
''There's a big possibility with another lad from the Championship, who also plays down the right.''
