Mansfield defender Scott McNiven is poised for a surprise return to action just three months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

The 26-year-old was aware of his condition before completing the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 home defeat by Macclesfield in November.

That was the last of McNiven's 18 appearances for Town to date, but after radiotherapy treatment he has now been given the all-clear and is expected to return to training after the weekend.

A club spokesman said: "Scott phoned the club on Tuesday afternoon and sounded well.

"He said his treatment had gone okay and he wanted to return to training on Monday. It's great news
