Club backs starlet
Teamtalk, 16 May 2002 Youth-team boss Paul Holland says Town have been outraged by rumours claiming that youngster Alex Baptiste has been sacked for drugs possession. The club have vehemently denied claims - which spread quickly on supporters' websites - that they had sacked 16-year-old youth-team star Baptiste after he had been caught in possession of drugs and then arrested by the police. Holland said: "We quickly looked into this and there was no substance whatsoever to the story. "The boy is very upset and distraught which you would expect. I don't know why these rumours started but Alex is a player of huge potential and the club never believed these stories for one moment." Baptiste has just been taken on by the club as a first-year trainee but has already shown his rich potential as a defender with regular appearances in the youth team last year. Holland added: "Technically, Alex has as much ability as anyone in this area of his age and has huge potential to be a first-team player if he works hard at his game. "This was the last thing he needed, having only just joined the club, but I am sure he is strong enough to deal with it." |
