STAGSNET`S STATISTICAL PREVIEW
25th August 2003 23:19

Our next opponents, Scunthorpe United, enjoyed their best league moments in the early 60's when they played in the old 2nd division, finishing 4th in 1961-62, only five points (under the two-point ruling) less than Leyton Orient in runners-up position, only about ten seasons after the Iron had been elected to the old div 3 (N) due to extention to 24 club. And the Iron's first-ever away league point was achieved at Field Mill exactly 53 years to the day of the forthcoming 29th league fixture. And none of the previous Field Mill outings have been goalless! And that compared to the very first and the most recent league game at Scunthorpe. And only on three occasions have the Stags been goalless in home games against the Iron. But there are several memorable league games between the two clubs. Among them are the 7-0 drubbing on April 21, 1975, which clinched the Stags' first-ever league championship and the most recent on March 2, 2002, when two second-half Andy Murray goals helped the Stags turn around a 0-1 half-time deficit to an important win in the promotion race. A memorable away game is the 4-1 stuffing on October 26, 1991, in the old fourth. Some away games ensured the first Stags away game that season, worth mentioning are 1-0 on August 25, 1965 and by the same scoreline on August 24, 1974, thus ensuring the first Stags away win since December 16, 1972 – a 4-0 thrashing of Crewe.
Scunthorpe is also known for unearthing England internationals such as Ray Clemence in goal and Kevin Keegan – both later to play for Liverpool. Richard Money, who currently manages Swedish premiership club AIK Stockholm, also learned his league ABC at the Iron.
So far this season, the Iron, a team often figuring in the play-offs picture, have clinched four points from three league games, the latest holding Oxford to a 1-1 home draw. Scunthorpe's first away game this season was a 3-2 victory against Bury, another team that faced the Iron in their heady days in the old 2nd division in the early 60's. While the Stags come afresh from a superb 3-0 away stuffing of Southend on their own ground. There are several players having played for both sides – those I have been able to trace are listed below. Among them are one of the West Ham KO heroes, Dudley Roberts and the one out-field player with most league appearences, Tony Ford.

Played for both sides: Steve Charles, Graeme Crawford, Tony Ford, Stuart Hicks, Ian Juryeff, Jim Lumby, Doug O'Connor, Malcolm Partridge, Martin Pemberton, Nicky Platnauer, Dudley Roberts, Stuart Thom.
