Stagsnet Report by Dean Foulkes

The Stags fielded basically a youth team tonight sprinkled with a full game for Rhys Day and Andy White. Biggest cheer of the night came when the tannoy announcer read out Harry Day, Mr Day laughed his head off !

Very scrappy perfomance with the Stags struggling to put any incisive moves together throughout the night and indeed had very few shots on goal. Apart from a White header in the dying seconds which former Stags keeper Tye did well to tip over I can't remember a single effort on target all night.

Matlock played some neat one touch football and Jason White played well throughout. Alex John Baptiste looked a class apart at the back and the first half finished goalless.

Trialist Sheikh Kamara had a disappointing evening and gave the ball away with 15 minutes to go in the centre of the park. This resulted in a Matlock goal as a powerful deflected shot beat White which in truth was a deserved lead. Minutes later the game was over as a slipped ball through left a Matlock forward one on one and despite a great one handed save from Jason White the rebound fell kindly and was buried for a convincing and well deserved 2-0 victory for Matlock.

Generally a disappointing performance, although used as a fitness exercise for Day, Baptiste and Andy White it was worrying that no clear cut chances were created and the midfield were well beaten by Matlock. There was no creativity although the Stags looked more threatening when Mitchell was replaced by Lance Mulligan for the final 10 minutes or so.

This was played out as a game the home side definitely wanted to win more than the Stags and although it's good to see various Stags sides playing locally every few days and earning non league clubs cash this game appeared to be one too many
for most of the men in amber on this miserable cold late July night.

Stagsnet Report by John Street

In a great setting for a Football Match at Causway Road, Matlock surrounded by the rolling Derbyshire Hills and on a lovely summers evening the Stags Reserves came up against a fired up Matlock Town of the Unibond League Division One.

The Gladiators had obviously heard that Alfreton Town of the same division had turned over the Stags first team a week ago, and were determined to inflict the same fate on their Division 3 second string visitors.

This game was played at a more frantic pace than any of the other pre season fixtures and the Stags first team and first team fringe players were put to the sword early on.

Day,Baptiste and Buxton were severly tested defensivley, and Jones and Kamara were struggling to get anytime on the ball in central midfield, and Mitchell and White were quickly snuffed out with any openings.

Following a goalless first half the Gladiators pushed on in the second half and following a string of saves from Jason White in the Stags goal they eventually got there just rewards with an opening goal and quickly followed with a second following a slip by Kamara let in Matlock for a 2 nil victory.

This wasnt a bad performance overall by the Stags, it required a stronger and more effective performance from the first team and fringe players and this was all that was missing.

Pluses for the Stags was Jason White with a strong performance in goal and string of good saves, Ryles, Buxtons solid defending (though distribution could have been better from the defence) Lloyd tidy and effective wing play, Andy White/Beardsley worked there socks off.

Team: JWhite, Ryles, Day, Baptiste, Buxton, Beardsley, Jones, Kamara, Lloyd, Mitchell, A
White

Substitutes:- Robinson for Ryles, Naylor for Baptiste, Carter for Jones, Hankey for Kamara, Mulligan for Mitchell.
