Boss: Walsall win ‘as good as any this season’
mansfieldtown.net, Sat 28 Oct 2023 Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough says this afternoon’s 2-1 victory over Walsall is ‘as good as any of the results we’ve had this season’ as Stags made it 19 matches without defeat. Aden Flint and Jordan Bowery scored either side of half-time to secure a third successive league win. Speaking to iFollow Stags post-match, Nigel said: “It is absolutely incredible and I am delighted with it [the win]. “Games like today are very important ones to win and it was probably the most hard-fought we've had out of the 19 games. “It feels as good as any of the results we've had this season.” https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2023/october/boss-walsall-win-as-good-as-any-this-season/ Despite being pleased with the result, the boss felt his side should have made the game more comfortable by taking more chances. “We should have been out of sight again,” he said. “Also, we have not kept a clean sheet. They've only had one or two shots on target and we have conceded. “We have to convert a bigger proportion of the chances we're creating. We had plenty today and only scored two goals. “When you score four away from home twice in a row it sort of masks and disguises it. We should be scoring more. “We are not hitting the target enough or playing the right pass at the right time. “They got some good blocks in and because they are such a genuine side they keep going.” The gaffer was pleased to see Jordan Bowery net his first of the campaign. “It was about time our full backs scored. It was on his wrong foot as well. “It [the ball] was spinning and when it's not gone for you all game it was about time one dropped for us. “It was no more than we deserved.” Lucas Akins was withdrawn from the match due to a head injury. The manager provided an update. “Lucas has gone to hospital to get checked out. We don't take any chances. “He said he was all right but I am always very wary and reluctant to leave people on.” ---------------------- Mark Stevenson on iFollow Stags: "another club record to talk about, Mansfield now 20 games unbeaten, stretching back to last season, equalling a club record." Nigel Clough: "Brilliant. Let's try and beat it. It'll be tough to do that this week with Port Vale and Wrexham in town." ------------------------ That was the most hard-fought game in the 19 match unbeaten run says Nigel Clough after Mansfield Town beat Walsall chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Sat 28 Oct 2023 Nigel Clough said today's battling 2-1 home win over Walsall was the most hard-fought of what is now a fantastic 19 game unbeaten start to the season. But Clough also said his side need to be burying more of the numerous chances they create to avoid nervous finishes. “This run is absolutely incredible and I am delighted with it,” he smiled. “Games like today are very important ones to win and it was probably the most hard-fought we've had out of the 19 games. It feels as good as any of the results we've had this season. https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/that-was-the-most-hard-fought-game-in-the-19-match-unbeaten-run-says-nigel-clough-after-mansfield-town-beat-walsall-4389392 “Also we have not kept a clean sheet. We had plenty today and only scored two goals. “When you score four away from home twice in a row it sort of masks and disguises it. We should be scoring more. “We are not hitting the target enough or playing the right pass at the right time.” He continued: “They got some good blocks in and because they are such a genuine side they keep going. “You know they will cause you some problems at some stage in the game and for 10-15 minutes after their goal they did. “They were three times behind at Newport a couple of weeks ago and came back for a point. They never give up and we never felt comfortable until the final whistle.” After Ryan Stirk had cancelled out Aden Flint's opener, the winner came from right wing back Jordan Bowery and Clough said: “It was about time our full backs scored. It was on his wrong foot as well. “It was spinning and when it's not gone for you all game it was about time one dropped for us. It was no more than we deserved.” Stags lost Lucas Akins in the first half after a bang to the head. “Lucas has gone to hospital to get checked out. We don't take any chances,” said Clough. “He said he was all right but I am always very wary and reluctant to leave people on - then suddenly he wasn't and did come off.” ---------------------- Bowery: Stags' quality significant in unbeaten run mansfieldtown.net, Sat 28 Oct 2023 Match-winner Jordan Bowery says ‘quality players and quality staff’ have been significant to Mansfield’s remarkable 19-game unbeaten run. The right-back netted the winner midway through the second period to earn Stags a 2-1 win at home to Walsall and stretch the undefeated record. It was Bowery’s first goal of the season and speaking post-match, he said: “We have quality players, quality staff, and I feel like when we go out there we all know our jobs and what we’re going to do. As a whole, as club, we look hungry this year and it looks positive. Hopefully there’ll be good things to come. https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2023/october/bowery-stags-quality-significant-in-unbeaten-run/ “It’s early on, but I think someone said on the bus the other day if we beat Harrogate, who are our bogey team, and the same goes for Sutton, it could be a different season for us. It could be a good season and it looks good so far. “For me it’s been a long time coming to get a goal. But the main thing is to get three points and be 19 games unbeaten.” Assessing the game, he said: “I thought we looked well in the first half. We created a few chances. They didn’t create many and we looked quite solid. “Second-half, they looked good and we knew what they were capable of, they have a good front four. We got back into it and looked quite settled after that. “Garns [Andy Garner, first team coach] and the gaffer have been saying it all season - goals win games. We look strong at the back and are trying to keep as many clean sheets as we can. If we keep doing that then it’s about people popping up the other end and getting on the scoresheet. “We’re solid all-round. It’s not just the back four, back five. It starts at the front and the pressure we put on teams.” On his goal, Bowery said: “It looked perfectly good from where I was stood,” smiled Bowery. “I think the keeper thought it was going wide. It took a while to go in. It went in in slow motion and it just clipped the post and went in. I couldn’t see, I had to go off the fans’ reaction.” ----------------------- Bowery told BBC Radio Nottingham: “It was a good pull back from Swanny, don’t know if he knew I was there or not, but he’ll take the assist. I just tried to side-foot it with my left foot, it took a little bobble. I think the keeper thought it was going wide. It took a while to go in. It went in in slow motion and it just clipped the post and went in. I couldn’t see, I had to go off the fans’ reaction.” --------------------------- Matchwinner Jordan Bowery delighted to score first Mansfield Town goal of the season in win over Walsall chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Sat 28 Oct 2023 It wasn't the sweetest of finishes but Jordan Bowery's 71st minute winner proved crucial as Mansfield Town saw off gutsy Walsall 2-1 today. Aden Flint's early goal was cancelled out by Ran Stirk's equaliser. Then Will Swan put the ball across from the left and Bowery met it with a volley that somehow found its way into the net off the far post. It was the right back's first goal of the season and he said: “For me it’s been a long time coming to get a goal. But the main thing is to get three points and be 19 games unbeaten. https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/matchwinner-jordan-bowery-delighted-to-score-first-mansfield-town-goal-of-the-season-in-win-over-walsall-4389403 “It looked perfectly good from where I was stood,” smiled Bowery. “I think the keeper thought it was going wide. It took a while to go in. It went in in slow motion and it just clipped the post and went in. I couldn’t see, I had to go off the fans’ reaction.” “It’s up there. It’s nice to win 4-1 at your local rivals, Notts County, but when you’re not always 100 per cent at it and they get back in to quieten us down a bit, it’s always good to get that goal to win. “I thought we looked well in the first half. We created a few chances. They didn’t create many and we looked quite solid. “Second-half, they looked good and we knew what they were capable of, they have a good front four. Aden Flint gave the hosts the lead inside 15 minutes, and Mansfield dominated large periods of the first half. However, Ryan Stirk equalised against his former club to haul Walsall back into the contest after the break. The Saddlers had their best spell of the game immediately after scoring, but were undone on 71 minutes when Jordan Bowery scored the decider. Sadler was frustrated to concede during that period, and believes Bowery's goal took the momentum away from his side for the latter stages of the game. "We switched his (Stirk) role a little bit when we changed to a 4-3-3 and it gave him license to press more," Sadler said. "In that spell after they scored, I felt like him and Coms were on the same line as each other. https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/walsall-fc/2023/10/28/mat-sadler-disappointed-with-narrow-walsall-defeat/ "I just needed to release the pair of them to do what they are good at. Ryan certainly epitomised that with the way he went about his stuff. "It was pleasing to see him score. It was just when we were on top for large parts of the second half, we just couldn't get that second goal, or walk away from here with a point. "A stuffy goal took the momentum away from us and put Mansfield on their way to victory." Harry Williams and Freddie Draper missed out due to injury with David Okagbue making his first start since September 9, and Danny Johnson starting against his former employers. Sadler was unable to confirm whether Draper will be available for next week, whilst Williams had a scan on Friday, and the club will discover the results in the coming days. "Harry had a scan on Friday. We haven't had a results back yet so we'll know next week," he confirmed. "I am not sure with Freddie yet. We'll have to see." ----------------------- Walsall boss Matt Sadler pleased with performance in narrow loss at Mansfield Town chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Sat 28 Oct 2023 Walsall boss Matt Sadler was pleased with his side's performance in today's narrow 2-1 defeat at unbeaten Mansfield Town. Aden Flint's early opener was equalised by ex-Stag Ryan Stirk only to see Jordan Bowery scuff a volley in off the post for the winner. “There was plenty there for me to be pleased with but we are frustrated to end up on the wrong side of the result,” he said. “We knew they would be a threat from set plays. Aden Flint is a big old lump and he is fantastic in the air. He has done that time and time again and we were unable to stop him which gave them that momentum. https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/walsall-boss-matt-sadler-pleased-with-performance-in-narrow-loss-at-mansfield-town-4389394 “The the winner was a very stuffy goal to concede. “It was frustrating as I thought we were on top in the second half. Nothing really dropped for us. “We came out really well. We switched to a 4-3-3 just before half-time and it that seemed to alter the momentum of the game and got us back on the front foot.” Ex-Stag Danny Johnson was booed all afternoon but failed to get the goal he wanted on his return. “The group really wanted him to have an afternoon to really remember for obvious reasons but unfortunately it didn't happen for him today,” said Sadler. “We were short on bodies today - down to the bare bones - and we were not able to name a full bench. So we are looking forward to getting players back. “I think we have a really good group and the makings of a team that can be very good in this division. We need to get some bodies back and improve things in January.” ------------------------ John Radford @JRadfordMTFC What a brilliant, hard-fought win. Another huge three points.
