Manager ‘pleased and proud’ after Stockport win
mansfieldtown.net, Sat 26 Aug 2023 Manager Nigel Clough says he was ‘pleased and proud’ after his men fought back to earn a 3-2 win over Stockport at One Call Stadium. Davis Keillor-Dunn hit the double and sponsor’s Man of the Match George Maris weighed in with a goal as Stags completed a sensational second-half comeback. The win maintained Stags’ 100% start to the season on home soil following wins against Morecambe and Grimsby. Speaking to the media after the game, the gaffer said: “I’m thrilled with the three points. To go 1-0 down and then 2-1 down ... I’m very disappointed with the manner in which we conceded the goals, but very pleased and proud with the way we responded in the second-half. The chances came about from just being patient. We went across the back, side to side, while looking forward and eventually we played the right ball. “That was pleasing. We’re not panicking, we’re not just throwing it in the box willy-nilly. The amber and blue had to come behind to defeat the Hatters, after trailing 2-1 at the break. And after a relentless second-half performance, Mansfield twice found the net to complete a stunning fightback. Summer signing Aden Flint was pleased to get the points in the bag following the match. We could have had a couple more but it was more like us.” Assessing Stags’ undefeated start, he said: “We could have had a few more wins, but we’re unbeaten and we have to keep the unbeaten run going. “On the whole results have been good. When we’re fluid and playing our football not many teams can live with us. “The way we play football and attack teams [is encouraging]. As I say, once we get fluid and move the ball crisp and sharp and move the ball forward when we can, not many teams can live with us. It’s nice to come into a team that plays football like that.” On his personal start to the season, he added: “I’m delighted to be at Mansfield Town playing. I didn’t do a pre-season so I’m not unfit but I’m still getting up to match sharpness.” The summer signing made his 500th career appearance today and said: “If you had said to me I’d be playing 500 games when I first started playing professional I’d have snapped your hand off. I’m grateful for all the games I’ve played but I don’t want to stop there. And Stags' summer signing is now looking forward to a very quick return to Sheffield Wednesday for Tuesday night's Carabao Cup tie after helping the Owls to promotion last season. “If you had said to me when I first turned professional I would play 500 games I would have snapped your hand off,” he smiled. “I am grateful for all the games I've played. We have a great game to look forward to at Hillsborough then we have Bradford here again which is another big game. “I didn't think going back to Sheffield Wednesday would happen any time soon. "We scored two goals and probably should have scored four. "They are pretty random in terms of how they go about things. A back four, a holding midfield player, and the rest is pretty rotational in terms of positions they take up on the pitch. "If you do pick the ball up, one pass potentially puts Tanto or Louie one v one, or the pair of them two v two against their centre backs which was a real source of joy for us. "But if don't do your jobs, then you have no chance. We've switched off twice. Ben's made two really good saves. Then we've not picked up for a third time and the ball ends up in our net via a deflection. Not acceptable. They were down to poor concentration. “You can't concede three goals and expect to win any games of football. “We need to have more control when we have the ball - we gave it away too cheaply.” Challinor said he would be strengthening his squad this week before next weekend's transfer deadline. “We have to make sure we are in a position that players out there do not feel comfortable and think they're going to play all the time,” he said. “We may be light in terms of numbers we have got, but we have just under a week to put that right. “Hopefully we can get a few bodies in.
