Manager ‘pleased and proud’ after Stockport win
mansfieldtown.net, Sat 26 Aug 2023 Manager Nigel Clough says he was ‘pleased and proud’ after his men fought back to earn a 3-2 win over Stockport at One Call Stadium. Davis Keillor-Dunn hit the double and sponsor’s Man of the Match George Maris weighed in with a goal as Stags completed a sensational second-half comeback. The win maintained Stags’ 100% start to the season on home soil following wins against Morecambe and Grimsby. Speaking to the media after the game, the gaffer said: “I’m thrilled with the three points. To go 1-0 down and then 2-1 down ... I’m very disappointed with the manner in which we conceded the goals, but very pleased and proud with the way we responded in the second-half. It was much more like us. https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2023/august/gaffer-on-stockport-win/ “In the first-half we looked a little bit off it and a little bit lethargic. Epitomised by Louis Reed who gave the ball away more times than he had in the previous 5 games. "Two soft goals. Missed tackles and he's scored from 18 yards unchallenged. Then the corner, it's Aden Flint loses the man and it's a loopy header in at the far post. “It took us going behind for us to get on the front foot after half-time and I thought for the majority of the second-half it was us in the ascendency and we could have scored more. They got some brilliant blocks in and the ‘keeper made some great saves. “We got a bit fortunate with the equaliser with the deflection. But considering the number of shots, crosses, blocks, one had to drop for us. “We did it at Doncaster and we did it at Grimsby and now we've done it for a third game running. It shows a lot of character. It was a brave second half. “I thought we were patient today, even at 2-1. Leading up to the equaliser we had two good chances. The chances came about from just being patient. We went across the back, side to side, while looking forward and eventually we played the right ball. “That was pleasing. We’re not panicking, we’re not just throwing it in the box willy-nilly. We’re still playing properly to create the chances.” Stags again produced an eye-catching performance in front of a bumper home crowd and rained in shots at the visiting goal in the second-half. “It feels like in six games we've had 20 games worth of thrills and spills and entertainment,” said the manager. “We are certainly creating chances.” ------------------------------- Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough praises Stags’ character after they hit back to beat Stockport County chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Sat 26 Aug 2023 Nigel Clough praised his side's character as they finally ran out winners, despite twice going behind in today's 3-2 home win over likely promotion rivals Stockport County. Davis Keillor-Dunn netted twice in the second half to deservedly seal the points on an afternoon when a biblical downpour threatened the game and it eventually kicked off 15 minutes late. “It feels like in six games we've had 20 games worth of thrills and spills and entertainment. We are certainly creating chances,” said Clough. “I am not too happy with the two we conceded today at all. But we've got the result and that's the main thing. https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/mansfield-town-boss-nigel-clough-praises-stags-character-after-they-hit-back-to-beat-stockport-county-4270168 “First half we were a bit lethargic. We were nowhere what we have been in recent weeks. We were a shadow of ourselves. “It took us going behind for us to get on the front foot after half-time and I thought for the majority of the second half it was us in the ascendency and we could have scored more. They got some brilliant blocks in and the keeper made some great saves. “It was much more like us in the second half. “We got a bit fortunate with the equaliser with the deflection. But one had to drop for us. “We came from behind at Doncaster and we did it again at Grimsby and now we've done it for a third game running. It shows a lot of character. It was a brave second half. “Losing play-off finalists, Stockport are one of the best teams in the league. So to get three points off them today, even this early in the season, is very important.” Keillor-Dunn netted twice but could have had double that. “That was Davis all over at this level,” said Clough. “We will get frustrated with him and he will miss chances and give the ball away in daft areas, but he will then pop up with two goals. His return in goals and assists so far has been brilliant.” ------------------------- Flint delighted as Stags beat Stockport mansfieldtown.net, Sat 26 Aug 2023 Mansfield Town defender Aden Flint says he’s delighted to be playing for the club as Stags maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a pulsating 3-2 win at home to Stockport today. The amber and blue had to come behind to defeat the Hatters, after trailing 2-1 at the break. And after a relentless second-half performance, Mansfield twice found the net to complete a stunning fightback. Summer signing Aden Flint was pleased to get the points in the bag following the match. Speaking to iFollow Stags, he said: “I’m delighted to get the three points first and foremost. https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2023/august/flint-post-stockport-win/ “I think in the first-half we were a little bit sloppy, which wasn’t like us from recent weeks. We conceded two soft goals, which we can eradicate, and we addressed them at half-time. “We came out in the second-half and started doing what we have been doing in recent games, which led us to the three points. “We came out on the front foot, got the goal and went again. We could have had a couple more but it was more like us.” Assessing Stags’ undefeated start, he said: “We could have had a few more wins, but we’re unbeaten and we have to keep the unbeaten run going. “On the whole results have been good. When we’re fluid and playing our football not many teams can live with us. “The way we play football and attack teams [is encouraging]. As I say, once we get fluid and move the ball crisp and sharp and move the ball forward when we can, not many teams can live with us. It’s nice to come into a team that plays football like that.” On his personal start to the season, he added: “I’m delighted to be at Mansfield Town playing. I didn’t do a pre-season so I’m not unfit but I’m still getting up to match sharpness.” The summer signing made his 500th career appearance today and said: “If you had said to me I’d be playing 500 games when I first started playing professional I’d have snapped your hand off. I’m grateful for all the games I’ve played but I don’t want to stop there. I want to carry on.” -------------------------- Mansfield Town captain Aden Flint delighted to mark his 500th senior game with comeback win over Stockport County chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Sat 26 Aug 2023 Towering Mansfield Town defender Aden Flint was delighted to mark his 500th senior career game with a win as captain as Mansfield Town beat Stockport County 3-2. And Stags' summer signing is now looking forward to a very quick return to Sheffield Wednesday for Tuesday night's Carabao Cup tie after helping the Owls to promotion last season. “If you had said to me when I first turned professional I would play 500 games I would have snapped your hand off,” he smiled. “I am grateful for all the games I've played. But I don't want to stop now - I want to carry on. https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/mansfield-town-captain-aden-flint-delighted-to-mark-his-500th-senior-game-with-comeback-win-over-stockport-county-4270175 “There have been many highlights from making my debut to three promotions and a cup win at Wembley. “I am delighted to be playing at Mansfield Town now. I didn't do a pre-season so I am still getting up to full sharpness but that will only come with playing games.” On the game he said: “It is nice to remain unbeaten and get a hard fought three points. “I don't think any other team has had as many injuries as us, but you just get on with it. “We are playing some great football. First half today we were a bit sloppy and it wasn't us. We let in two soft goals. “But we addressed that at half-time, came back out on the front foot, started playing our stuff and look what happened. We got the result.” He added: “We now have to keep this momentum going. When we are fluid and playing our football I don't think there are many teams that can live with us. We could have had a few more wins on the board. “I love the way we play football and attack against teams. It's nice to come into a team that play a lot of football like this.” Flint is now ready for his Hillsborough return and said: “It is a massive week. We have a great game to look forward to at Hillsborough then we have Bradford here again which is another big game. “I didn't think going back to Sheffield Wednesday would happen any time soon. But as soon as the draw was made I have been looking forward to it.” ------------------------- Dave Challinor told the Stockport youtube channel: "We thought we could hurt them with Tanto and Louie's pace. "We scored two goals and probably should have scored four. "They are pretty random in terms of how they go about things. A back four, a holding midfield player, and the rest is pretty rotational in terms of positions they take up on the pitch. "If you do pick the ball up, one pass potentially puts Tanto or Louie one v one, or the pair of them two v two against their centre backs which was a real source of joy for us. "But if don't do your jobs, then you have no chance. We've switched off twice. Ben's made two really good saves. Then we've not picked up for a third time and the ball ends up in our net via a deflection. Not acceptable. "Then the third goal, a horrific header from Fraser, we don't get to the ball quick enough, we show the lad on his favoured right foot and he passes it in the corner. ------------------------ Stockport County boss Dave Challinor slams his side’s defending as Mansfield Town twice hit back to win chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Sat 26 Aug 2023 Stockport County boss Dave Challinor slammed his side's defending as they twice let leads slip before losing 3-2 at Mansfield Town in a real thriller this afternoon. Stags raised their game after trailing 2-1 at the break and a Davis Keillor-Dunn brace sealed them points for the home side. “We expected them to come at us second half,” said Challinor. “We set up in a way that we accepted we might be a bit deep but thought we could hurt them on the counter attack. https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/stockport-county-boss-dave-challinor-slams-his-sides-defending-as-mansfield-town-twice-hit-back-to-win-4270173 “We had opportunities to do that but didn't take them. “But you have to defend well and the goals were awful again. They were down to poor concentration. “You can't concede three goals and expect to win any games of football. “We need to have more control when we have the ball - we gave it away too cheaply.” Challinor said he would be strengthening his squad this week before next weekend's transfer deadline. “We have to make sure we are in a position that players out there do not feel comfortable and think they're going to play all the time,” he said. “We may be light in terms of numbers we have got, but we have just under a week to put that right. “Hopefully we can get a few bodies in. How many may be dictated by if anyone goes out which is still a possibility. “It will be a busy six days for us.” ---------------------- |
