Stags sign Leicester defender on loan
mansfieldtown.net, Fri 25 Aug 2023 Mansfield Town are delighted to announce the signing of Lewis Brunt on a season-long loan deal from Leicester City. The 22-year-old centre-back came through the ranks at Aston Villa before joining the Foxes in the summer of 2021. The youngster was recognised for his standout displays during the 2021/22 season, winning the Development Squad Player of the Season at the Club’s end of season awards. Lewis has previous loan experience at Gloucester City and has also played four times professionally for Leicester’s first team - twice in the Premier League and twice in the Emirates FA Cup. https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2023/august/stags-sign-leicester-defender-on-loan/ Manager Nigel Clough said: “We’ve seen Lewis play a few times last season for Leicester’s under-23s and he acquitted himself well. He’s the best player we could get at this stage and we needed someone in defensively to cover the injuries we’ve had in the last few weeks. “We’ve been working on it for a week or so and the transfer has been a little tricky but our CEO, Mrs. Radford, has worked very hard to get it over the line and we’re grateful for that.” --------------------- Nigel Clough told iFollow Stags: "We needed somebody in defensively, central defensively if possible, just to cover us with all the injuries that we've had in the last few weeks." In terms of any further transfers, Clough said: "no that's us done unless something happens or someone else goes out but I don't think that's very likely. "It takes us above and beyond the numbers that we wanted, so we're grateful to the owners for that. They recognise the freakish situation with 9 players out and 6 of them being defenders. "With the injuries, it knocks everybody back because they (the fit players) see good players not being available." In relation to Clough saying the transfer was a little ticky, he told iFollow Stags on 22 Aug: “We’re negotiating with a club. Things aren’t quite right from our point of view so we’ll revisit it this week and see if we can tweak it. We’ll keep working on it.” --------------------- Lewis Brunt told iFollow Stags: "I'm delighted to be here. On what attracted him to the move, he said: "Game time. Show people what I can do. As many games as possible. "I'm a versatile defender. I like to be on the ball. I can play anywhere across the back or holding midfield. Technical ability, passing, passing range. "I want to grow as a person, sharing the dressing room with senior pros, get into the men's environment. "You're fighting for points, for careers ... that's another thing I'm really looking forward to." "I'm expecting it to be tough, physical, but I'm expecting to enjoy it. But it's definitely not going to be easy." ---------------------- Leicester City deal confirmed as 'tricky transfer' sees defender leave leicestermercury.co.uk, Fri 25 Aug 2023 The 22-year-old centre-back has played four times for the senior side, including twice last season against Gillingham in the FA Cup and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League Leicester City centre-back Lewis Brunt has joined League Two side Mansfield on a season-long loan deal. The 22-year-old, captain of the club’s development squad last term, has been around the first team for the best part of two years, making two senior appearances last season. He started in the FA Cup win at Gillingham and came on as a substitute in the defeat to Nottingham Forest. He now gets the opportunity to play regular senior football with the Stags, who have started their League Two season with a win and three draws. They missed out on the play-offs last season on goal difference. Their manager Nigel Clough said it was a “tricky” deal to pull off, but is glad it’s done with Brunt needed amid injuries in his ranks. https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/leicester-city-deal-confirmed-tricky-8704315 Clough said: “We’ve seen Lewis play a few times last season for Leicester’s under-23s and he acquitted himself well. However, while he returned alongside the first team for pre-season training in July, he didn’t feature in any friendlies for Enzo Maresca. He is the second City player to head out on loan this season, with forward Nathan Opoku heading back to sister club OH Leuven for the campaign. ------------------------- |
