Stags strengthen defence with Cargill signing

Mansfield Town are delighted to announce the signing of centre-back Baily Cargill on a two-year deal, with the option of a further year.

The left-footed defender joins the club following two-and-a-half years at Forest Green Rovers.

The 27-year-old has two promotions from Sky Bet League Two on his CV; the most recent from his time in Nailsworth as Forest Green were crowned champions in May 2022.

Baily’s other fourth tier promotion was with MK Dons in 2019, finishing third in his first season in Buckinghamshire.

A product of AFC Bournemouth’s Academy, the ball-playing centre-half made his Premier League debut in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in 2017.

From 2014 to 2015 he made seven appearances for England under-20s, scoring once on his debut.

Between 2016-2018 Baily enjoyed spells on loan from the Cherries at Coventry, Gillingham and Partick Thistle before moving to Stadium MK on a permanent basis.

On Stags’ third new signing of the summer, boss Nigel Clough said: “He’s a natural left-footer, who was probably one of the outstanding players twelve months ago for Forest Green when they romped the division.

“He wants the challenge of a third promotion from League Two, having achieved it with Forest Green and MK Done and his desire is still there to get another one.

“We think he’ll complement Alfie Kilgour well and we’re very pleased to secure his signature.”

Boss looking forward to working with new addition
mansfieldtown.net, Wed 31 May 2023

Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough says he’s ‘very pleased’ to have captured the signature of ‘outstanding’ new recruit Baily Cargill as Stags continue to make early progress in the transfer market.

The 27-year-old centre-back has two promotions to his name, with MK Dons in 2019 and Forest Green Rovers in 2022.

Speaking to iFollow Stags at RH Academy after Cargill’s signing, Nigel said: “[He’s a] Left sided, natural left-footer and played a lot of games for Forest Green over the last two-and-a-half seasons.

“Twelve months ago, he was one of the outstanding players in the league when they romped away with the division.

“He’d got quite a few offers. When you get a player of that quality who’s available on a free transfer [then he’s bound to get] some offers from League One and he certainly had offers from League Two.

“He’s still friends with Jordan Bowery from his time at MK Dons so he’d spoken to Jordan about us and done a bit of research on us as well.

“Geographically, I think it suited him and he wanted the challenge of trying to get a third promotion.

“He got one with Forest Green and MK Dons out of this division, I think his desire is to go and get another one.

“We’re very pleased to have got his signature and we’re looking forward to working with him.”

The boss hopes to strengthen his backline even further in the coming weeks.

“We need another defender, that’s where we’re light,” he said.

“With Elliott Hewitt being out until February time, March time maybe, that’s left a big hole with his flexibility and his ability to play right-back or centre-half.

“We’re looking for somebody who can play centre-half but maybe do a little bit at right-back for us as well to add to what we’ve got - maybe one, maybe two, we’ll see.

“We’ve got Calum Macdonald in at left-back so [we have] good competition for Macca [Stephen McLaughlin].

“Calum will start the season with Macca being out.

“It’s slowly coming together but certainly Baily and Calum are another two pieces [of the puzzle].”

“We needed a left-back, that was sorted. There was a couple of options there, but Calum [Macdonald] was the pick of them and now [we have] a centre-half.

“I don’t think we could much better than Baily [Cargill]. I think he’s got as good a chance as anybody of settling in and playing the role that we need him to.”

Everything about the club feels right for me - Cargill
mansfieldtown.net, Wed 31 May 2023

Mansfield Town’s latest signing Baily Cargill says ‘everything felt right’ when visiting RH Academy and meeting with Stags’ staff before signing a two-year deal at the club on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old centre-back has gained promotion twice from Sky Bet League Two already in his career and, despite interest from the division above, says he’s ‘excited’ to join Mansfield following his departure from Forest Green Rovers.

Speaking at RH Academy - the club’s training ground - about what supporters can expect from him in an amber and blue shirt, he said: “To come in, be myself and do my job. which is defending.

“The support is great [here].

“Everything about the club felt right for me.

“Everything felt right after I came up here and met everyone last week.”

Stags’ RH Academy training base was particularly enticing for the defender.

“I’m really pleased to get it [the deal] done,” he said.

“I came up here [to the club’s RH Academy] last week and met the manager and all the guys [staff] and as soon as I met them, I was keen to get it done.

“Having seen the facilities, it’s not what I’m used to.

“At Forest Green they don’t have the facilities [that are] here so I’m really excited.”

The former MK Dons man already knows some of Mansfield’s playing squad.

“I played with Jord [Jordan Bowery] and Hiram [Boateng] at MK [Dons],” Baily added.

“I spoke to him [Bowery] quite a bit before I came up here and he’s helped me out and told me what’s good about the place.

“It’s nice to have someone that you know at the club already so you can get a feel for it.”

The ball-playing defender has gained automatic promotion from Sky Bet League Two with MK Dons and Forest Green. When asked about the key to those successes, he said: “It might sound a bit cliché but it’s the dressing room.

“Both times [I’ve been promoted] they’ve been the best dressing rooms I’ve been in in terms of camaraderie and off the pitch enjoying each other’s company.

“You end up wanting to run that extra yard for each other.

“I heard there’s a great group here and I think a lot of them have been together for a while now.

“You need to be competitive and work hard, fight for every point and fight for every ball.”

The AFC Bournemouth Academy graduate went on to describe his skillset.

“I’ve always been a ball-playing centre-half but as I’ve got older, I’ve realised defending is way more important,” he said.

“I’ll be giving it everything I’ve got, trying to organise the team as much as I can, and I’ll give it 100% every week.

“I’ll try and win my battles and I will try and pick a pass when I can.

“There’s not too many left-sided centre-halves that are left-footed, it’s always been a bonus that I am left-footed.

“Hopefully I can slot straight in and start enjoying it straight away.”

https://www.fgr.co.uk/news/2023-retained-list-confirmed

Forest Green Rovers can today confirm our retained list following the conclusion of the 2022/23 season.

All of our departing players have made a considerable impact during their time at FGR - and we wish them all the very best for the future and thank them for their efforts during their time at The Bolt New Lawn.

Six of our departing players (Luke McGee, Lewis Thomas, Baily Cargill, Jordan Moore-Taylor, Regan Hendry and Ben Stevenson) were members of our League Two title-winning side in the 2021/22 season. We'll always remember the huge part they played in that historic campaign.
