Mansfield Town are delighted to announce the signing of left-back Calum Macdonald.

The 25-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the option of a further year.

The Nottingham-born defender began his professional career at Derby County and was named as the Rams’ under-23s Player of the Season in 2016/17. During that time, he also earned international recognition, winning two caps for Scotland under-21s.

The following season, Macdonald enjoyed a spell on loan at Barrow before signing permanently for League One Blackpool.

He went on to make 19 appearances for the Seasiders in all competitions before joining Tranmere on loan.

MacDonald played a significant role in an impressive season for Rovers as they reached the League Two Play-Offs, before making his move permanent to Prenton Park.

After two seasons at Tranmere, Macdonald signed for Stockport County, before penning a short-term contract with Bristol Rovers in January of this year.

Manager Nigel Clough said: “Calum is a good, experienced left-back at this level having previously played over seventy League Two matches for Tranmere.

“With Macca (Stephen McLaughlin) missing the start of the season due to injury, we needed someone who can go straight into the line-up at left-back and Calum fits the bill.”

Calum Macdonald said: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign for the Stags.

“The club has kept a strong squad together and this seems like the perfect place for me at this stage of my career.”

Calum Macdonald told iFollow Stags:
“I’m absolutely delighted to sign for the Stags. It's a club I know very well, I've grown up not far from the area" (he's from Nottingham).
"I know the support base, I know the area, I know people who've played for the club in the past. I've played here myself a couple of times.
Asked what attracted him to the Stags, Macdonald said: "Loads of things.
"The way the club wants to go forward in the league and the fact the club has kept quite a strong squad together from previous seasons and they've been around challenging which is massive.
"The gaffer doesn't need much of an introduction. I kind of knew him anyway from when he was at Derby as manager. I was a young lad there. There are not many clubs when you ask around for references nobody said a bad word about the place.
On Clough: "I probably missed him by a couple of years in terms of being around that squad" (at Derby).
"He was always looking over the young lads so I sort of knew the way he worked.
"He doesn't need an introduction. He did great things at that club and equally, since he moved on."
(Macdonald was at Derby as a young player while Clough was in charge from 2009 to 2013 and the full-back said he saw first-hand at Pride Park how he kept his eye on the next generation.)
On his career: "I grew up at Derby. I moved to Blackpool. Then Tranmere is really where I made my way in the game, I played quite a lot over the two seasons.
"I moved to Stockport and then I ended up at Bristol Rovers recently. I didn't play as much as I wanted to in the last 6 months."

"I like to help the team move the ball quickly. I like to take set pieces. I like to deliver the ball early and feed strikers. And keep everything solid down my side."

"I don't mind either way (back 4 or back 5), I've done a bit of bot over my career."

"My goal is to get this club promoted. It's been knocking on the door the last couple of years."
