The Stags put up a good fight but against there more experienced hosts were always it seemed going to be over powered eventually.
An early penalty gave Hartlepool a first half lead and they ran in 3 more goals in the second half, backed by a strong wind against the younger Stags.
The Youth Team finished off their season on a high with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Mansfield Town at Peterlee on Saturday. Martin Scott again gave experience to some of his younger players and also features Chris Howard, a triallist from Leicester.
The strong wind and bone dry pitch made good football difficult but the team adapted well and gained their just rewards with a good second half performance.
They went ahead in the 10th minute when a strong run by Steven Istead was brought to an abrupt half in the penalty area and Darren CRADDOCK tucked away the penalty.
Matty ROBSON doubled the lead in the 63rd minute, cutting in from the left and firing home. The left back then turned provider for the third just three minutes later, pulling the ball back for the impressive ISTEAD to score from just inside the penalty area.
Michael MAIDENS scored the final goal of the game and the season with fifteen minutes to go – the keeper blocked the first shot but the young striker was first to the ball and tucked the ball into an empty net from 18 yards.
“It was a good result and a good performance, especially in the second half, “ said Scott. “Although we haven't had the results in the last three or four weeks, the performances have definitely improved as the younger players have settled into the team. It's always good to go into the close season with a good result and more importantly a good performance behind you.”
