CLOUGH AND JON BRADY REACTION

Boss on Cobblers defeat
mansfieldtown.net, Tues 14 Mar 2023

Manager Nigel Clough offered his thoughts following Mansfield’s 1-0 loss to Northampton Town at Sixfields this evening.

Sam Hoskins put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot on 28 minutes before midfielder Stephen Quinn was shown a red card on 66 minutes.

The gaffer told iFollow Stags after the game: “[The performance was] very difficult to assess when you’ve got nine players who couldn’t start the game tonight.

“There was no lack of fight, especially when we went to ten men.

“There were four or five situations in the first-half where we had to do better to get a goal.

“We looked as though we hadn’t played for ten days, a little bit rusty but we had enough chances and situations [to score].”

“To have nine first-teamers unavailable to start tonight, coming to one of our promotion rivals, made it tough.

“We’ve got no choice but to get through it. We want to be in contention once we get a few [players] back.

“I think to have won four out of five [games] as we had with the injuries was remarkable. We’ve got to hang on in there.”

The manager addressed the decision to send Quinn off in the second half: “The only problem is that there was a foul three seconds before it, which is [the reason for] Stephen Quinn’s reaction, but no excuse for it still.

“It’s more [disappointing to lose him] for the next three games when we’re as short as we are, we’ve no [Anthony] Hartigan, no [Louis] Reed, no [George] Maris. We’re a little bit light in midfield so we’ll have to shuffle it around for Saturday.”

The Stags face a trip to Stockport County this Saturday. Nigel provided an injury update on the squad.

“Louis Reed is not too far away. Elliott Hewitt is not too far away. Macca [Stephen McLaughlin] we were hoping to get 25 minutes of [in the game against Northampton] with a view to starting on Saturday.

“He got a kick right on the sore part of his ankle again. The lad caught him a little bit late and unfortunately he’s [McLaughlin] had to come off.

“We’ll involve the youth team lads again [on Saturday], [there’s] nothing we can do but wait for them [the aforementioned first team players] to get fit.”

Stephen Quinn let us down says boss Nigel Clough after Mansfield Town veteran sees another red in defeat to rivals
chad.co.uk, Tues 14 Mar 2023

Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough said veteran Stephen Quinn had again let the club down as the Irishman's straight red card on 66 minutes left Stags with an even bigger mountain to climb in the 1-0 defeat at promotion rivals Northampton Town tonight.

The red mist descended when the officials missed a foul on Quinn and he took immediate retribution of his own with a dangerous tackle on Kieron Bowie that sparked a touchline melee.

Quinn had previously served a six game ban last season for also losing control in similar fashion.

“It was a red card but it was also a blatant foul on him two second before it. I have no problems with the red card, only the foul before it,” said Clough.

“Their lad had caught him and the fourth official was only 10-15 yards away.

“But, obviously the tackle after that, he should know better and he has let us down.

“Unfortunately that's the way he is at times and he realises that now. He will now miss the next three games which is a big blow.”

Injury-hit Stags also saw Stephen McLaughlin limp off 18 minutes after coming an as a second half sub following six weeks out injured.

“We had nine players who were unavailable to start the game tonight and losing Quinny and then Stephen McLaughlin picking up another knock when he came on - they are the two biggest blows tonight as well as the result.

“It was about gradually easing him and Oatesy (Rhys Oates) back in.

“The ball came back out to him from a cross that had been cleared and their lad has caught him right on the sore spot on his ankle again. We will have to see how he is and we need to get Elliott Hewitt available for Saturday.”

Mansfield did have chances but in the end were beaten by a 28th minute Sam Hoskins penalty kick after Keiran Wallace had lost the ball to spark a home attack that ended with a foul by Christy Pym with Wallace then quickly withdrawn from the game.

“It was frustrating. I don't think we played particularly badly at times and we had five or six situations where we could have got a goal, even with 10 men,” said Clough.

“Then we gave the ball away in the middle and gave away a penalty.

“I thought Keiran Wallace was very unlucky to be booked after only three minutes as he played the ball. I think that set the tone for the decisions on the night.

“But he was on a yellow card and after he gave the ball away we had to make the change.

“One more tackle and he would have been sent off - and we're down to the bare bones as it is.”

On 35 minutes Stags skipper Ollie Clarke was one-on-one with the keeper and there was a collision between the pair after Clarke had dinked the ball past him.

The referee said no penalty but Clough is adamant it should have been given.

“The referee said to me that it was normal contact but I don't understand what that phrase means,” said Clough.

“Once Ollie Clarke has dinked it over the goalkeeper, whether he is shooting or trying to go round him, there is no such thing as normal contact.

“And with the sending-off and injuries it was a pretty poor night for us.”

Opposition view: Stags boss Clough felt key decisions went against Mansfield in Sixfields defeat
northamptonchron.co.uk, By James Heneghan, Tues 14 Mar 2023

Mansfield Town manager Nigel Clough felt the big refereeing decisions went against his side during Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to promotion rivals Northampton at Sixfields.

Sam Hoskins scored the only goal of the game with a 28th-minute penalty after Louis Appéré attempted to go round Christy Pym but was tripped by the Stags goalkeeper in doing so.

Ollie Clarke and Danny Johnson missed chances to level in the first-half before Mansfield's hopes were effectively ended by Stephen Quinn's inexplicable sending off midway through the second period.

Whilst Clough did not deny that Quinn’s reckless challenge deserved a red card, he insisted his side should have been awarded a foul on the same man moments earlier. He also felt they were denied a clear penalty in the first-half when Lee Burge challenged Clarke as the Stags skipper charged through on goal.

"It was a frustrating night," admitted Clough. "We didn't play particularly well but I didn't think we were too bad and there were four, five, six situations where we could easily have got a goal, even with 10 men.

"It's a red card but he's also blatantly fouled two seconds earlier. The lad has caught him and the fourth official is only 10 yards away but it's not given and then the tackle after that, he should know better. He let us down.

"I've got no problem with the red card but there's a foul before it and there were one or two other decisions as well. We definitely should have had a penalty on Ollie Clarke in the first-half.

"The ref told me at half-time that it was 'normal contact' but whether he's shooting or trying to go around the goalkeeper, there's no such thing as normal contact. I asked him to explain the phrase ‘normal contact’ because I've never heard it before. I also thought Kieron Wallace was very unlucky to get booked after three minutes - he played the ball.

"It was a pretty poor night for us but we had enough situations to go and get a goal."

Clough says long injury list hindered Mansfield against Cobblers
Mansfield had nine players missing, one less than Cobblers

northamptonchron.co.uk, By James Heneghan, Tues 14 Mar 2023

Mansfield boss Nigel Clough said his side were ‘rusty’ and lamented their lengthy injury list after losing 1-0 away to Northampton at Sixfields on Tuesday.

The Stags have struggled with injury all season and were missing nine players on Tuesday, but it’s been a similar story for the Cobblers who went one better with 10 first-team absentees.

Sam Hoskins scored the decisive goal with a well-taken 28th-minute penalty as Town moved eight points clear of Mansfield and within striking distance of the top three, albeit having played a game more than Carlisle and Stevenage.

“The performance was very difficult to assess when you’ve got nine players who couldn’t start the game tonight,” bemoaned Clough, whose side had the weekend off due to a postponement. “We looked as though we hadn’t played for ten days, a little bit rusty, but we had enough chances and situations to score.

“To have nine first-teamers unavailable to start tonight, coming to one of our promotion rivals, made it tough. We’ve got no choice but to get through it. We want to be in contention once we get a few players back.

“I think to have won four out of five games as we had with the injuries was remarkable. We’ve got to hang on in there.”

It went from bad to worse for Mansfield when Stephen Quinn saw red for lunging in on Kieron Bowie. He will now be suspended for three games.

"It’s the way he is at times and he realises that now,” Clough added. “He’s definitely a miss when you have no players to start with and it’s more disappointing to lose him for the next three games when we’re as short as we are.

"Stephen McLaughlin picked up another knock when he came on and we’ve no Anthony Hartigan, no Louis Reed, no George Maris. We’re a little bit light in midfield so we’ll have to shuffle it around for Saturday.

"We have to pick up the players but we only have about 10 to pick up. We’ll involve the youth team lads again on Saturday, there’s nothing we can do but wait for them to get fit.”

Cobblers boss Brady delighted as 'strong performance' sees off Stags
northamptonchron.co.uk, By James Heneghan, Tues 14 Mar 2023

Cobblers boss Jon Brady hailed a superb all-round team performance from his side after they deservedly saw off promotion rivals Mansfield Town at Sixfields on Tuesday.

Sam Hoskins scored the only goal of the game with a 28th-minute penalty after Louis Appéré was brought down by Mansfield goalkeeper Christy Pym.

That was reward for an excellent first-half display and the home side had chances for a more comfortable win, especially once Stephen Quinn saw red for a shocking challenge on Kieron Bowie midway through the second-half, but one goal would be enough.

"I'm just really pleased for our players and our supporters tonight," said Brady, who was without 10 players due to injury and suspension. "It was a strong win and a strong performance.

https://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/sport/football/cobblers-boss-brady-delighted-as-strong-performance-sees-off-stags-4064649

"I want to talk about the players who were out there. We have got a lot of missing, 10 tonight, but the players who have been on the periphery came in and performed very well and worked really hard, including the subs.

"I felt the players were excellent in their organisation and the way they stopped the opposition from playing and it led to us creating to a lot of chances on the back of that.

"It was just a really disciplined performance, not just from the starting XI but all 14, 15 players."

On the winning penalty, Brady added: "It takes courage to step up and stick it away like that and Sam's been there when we have needed him this season.

"The penalty came off the back of our organisation and it was a great run and shimmy from Louis to go round Pym and he's been brought down. It was great teamwork to create the penalty."

Brady hails key individuals in impressive home win and questions Mansfield Town's 'brutal' tactics
northamptonchron.co.uk, By James Heneghan, Tues 14 Mar 2023

All 14 players who featured for the Cobblers during Tuesday’s excellent win over Mansfield Town earned praise from manager Jon Brady afterwards, but for many, there was one clear standout.

Will Hondermarck had only shown his ability in flashes after arriving on a two-and-a-half-year deal January but, back to full fitness, and having been eased in by Brady, he produced a statement performance and dominated the midfield battle to down the Stags at Sixfields.

"It has taken Will a little bit of time to get up to speed after he joined us,” said Brady. “A lot of times this season we have had to build up players' minutes and and ease them in and that’s what we have done with Will.

"He obviously wanted to come in and play so it's been tough for him, but it's important to get the timing right and I thought he was very good tonight. He was excellent.

"There have been a few key points which we have talked to him about in terms of what we want from him, but the last thing I said to him before the game was to go out and enjoy himself and it looked like he really did.”

Another player who stood out on Tuesday was Kieron Bowie, who thankfully walked away unscathed from Stephen Quinn’s reckless challenge. For the second game running, the young Fulham loanee came off the bench and Cobblers noticeably improved as a result.

Brady added: "Kieron is all you want in a young player who's in his first loan. He gets on brilliantly with the boys, he loves playing for the team and he's worked so hard to get back fit.

"He's got back way before he should have and that’s down to Kieron and our physio Michael (Bolger) and the medical department. Michael has a real tough job at the moment but all the staff work really hard and Kieron has to have the attitude and the hunger to come back and he's certainly got that in abundance.

“You could see how much he helps the team when he came on. He's very selfless in his performances and we are very grateful to have him here.”

Brady received his fifth yellow card of the season for his touchline antics during Tuesday’s game and afterwards he revealed what that was for.

"I respect Mansfield but every time you are on a breakaway against them, they scythe you down,” he said. "It's brutal what they do and it's game after game and I think it's very disappointing that the referees don't knuckle down on it. Everyone knows it.

"That's what I was hugely disappointed about - the physicality of their challenges - so I had a point to make to the officials because I didn't think they were dealing with it properly.”

On Quinn’s red card, he added: "The ref had to make the decision and he made it pretty swiftly. I think it was frustration from them and that came from the way we were playing.

"But it was what it was and even if we played against 11, I felt we would have been strong enough to go on and win the game.”
