CLOUGH CONFIRMS MANSFIELD SHOWED INTEREST IN BROOM
24th July 2022 12:27

Nigel Clough talking to iFollow Stags, Sat 23 July 2022

Asked about Ryan Broom, a bit of interest in him if Barry Fry is to be believed ... Clough laughed: "Yes we made an enquiry while we were dealing with Peterborough over Christy Pym.

"But Ryan made it clear he would like to stay in League One, at least if he can."

Peterborough United midfielder Ryan Broom labelled ‘disrespectful’ after snubbing bid from Mansfield Town

Peterborough United have revealed their midfielder Ryan Broom refused to even speak to Mansfield Town after the Stags made a move for his services.

Posh director of football Barry Fry believes Broom was ‘disrespectful’ in declining to even talk to the Stags after the clubs had agreed a fee for the 25-year-old.

It’s thought Broom does not want to drop into League Two, but Fry insists there has been very little interest in a player who moved to Posh from Cheltenham for an undisclosed fee in August, 2020.

Broom has started just eight games for Posh, but did spend a successful 2021-22 season on loan at Plymouth Argyle.

However, Argyle have no interest in Broom now, and nor do Barnsley who are managed by Broom’s former Cheltenham boss Michael Duff.

“I rang Michael Duff and he has no interest in Ryan,” Fry said. “He certainly wouldn’t pay a fee for him as he has other priorities.

“The deal with Mansfield was a good one, but Ryan wouldn’t even speak to them which was disrespectful in my opinion. There are not exactly a lot of clubs queueing up to sign him.”

Posh manager Grant McCann did suggest Broom could force his way back into his first-team plans with a good pre-season, but that is no longer the case according to club chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

“The manager has used him (Broom) to fill in for injured players (this summer),” he said.

“The gaffer does not see him getting game time for us, so it's best for the player to get a good move as he will want to play.”

Nigel Clough, who already has a number of summer injuries to contend with, is said to be looking for up to two more players to complete his squad.

EXCLUSIVE: MANSFIELD TOWN WEIGHING UP TRANSFER SWOOP FOR PETERBOROUGH UNITED MAN

League Two outfit Mansfield Town are lining up a transfer move for Peterborough United midfielder Ryan Broom, sources have exclusively informed Football League World.

The 25-year-old was made available for transfer by Posh earlier this summer, with his time at the club since his arrival from Cheltenham Town in 2020 not working out.

Broom has had loan spells at both Burton Albion and Plymouth Argyle since his switch to London Road and is now seeking game-time elsewhere once again, despite being told by Peterborough boss Grant McCann that he could potentially win back a place in his squad.

Despite turning down a move to a fellow League One club this summer, Broom is now being targeted by ambitious fourth tier side Mansfield, who fell short of promotion last season in the play-off final against Port Vale.

Nigel Clough wants to bolster his midfield ahead of the new League Two season, and he believes that Broom can go some way to strengthening his side if a deal can be struck with Posh.
