Mansfield Town can confirm that striker Danny Johnson has joined Walsall on loan until 15 January 2023.

“Danny has gone out to Walsall so it leaves us with a space [in the squad] if we can fill it,” said the boss.

"Walsall were the ones who were keenest on Danny. There was a couple of options for him. We couldn't quite get a permanent done. So it's an initial six month loan possibly with a view to a permanant.

"It just didn't quite work out football wise with Danny. We had no problem with him at all. We wish him all the best at Walsall."

Walsall wanted to give Johnson a two-year contract but say Stags changed their minds and have only loaned him until January.

But he is still not part of Clough's future plans and he said: “Danny was made available and I think that will happen in January.

“It has been done initially as a loan, but I think that is open to change in January.”

Mansfield owner 'changed mind' on Danny Johnson's permanent Walsall move

Walsall boss Michael Flynn says they had to settle on a six-month loan for new striker Danny Johnson after initially agreeing a two-year deal.

The Saddlers brought in Johnson from League Two rivals Mansfield Town on Saturday, with the 29-year-old making an immediate impression by scoring in a 2-0 friendly win at Solihull Moors.

Supporters had been eagerly anticipating a centre-forward signing but some were disappointed to see Johnson only come in until January.

Flynn clarified the situation as he said: "We tried. We had agreed a two-year contract, and Mansfield have been good, but their owner changed their mind.

"You have to respect that. The only thing they were happy to do in the end was a six-month loan.

"It's been ongoing. It's nothing to do with our owners not backing me to give him a two-year contract.

"We agreed that, but look, circumstances (changed).

"The one thing it gives us is that if Danny is here scoring goals and becomes available in January, and he enjoys it, it puts us at the front of the queue to sign him."

Johnson comes in having had healthy scoring record throughout his career - getting 20 goals in 2020/21 for Leyton Orient.

Flynn, who is still targeting more additions, added: "You can look at it two ways.

"What it does as well is that we're only paying half of what we were going to pay.

"We've only got him for six months and we're not paying 12, so that can loosen up a little bit more money to bring in these extra players I desperately need."

Saddlers snap up striker Danny Johnson

Walsall Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of striker Danny Johnson on a six-month loan from Mansfield Town.

The 29-year-old, who found the back of the net seven times in 26 appearances for the Stags in all competitions last season, including one against the Saddlers back in September, becomes our 14th signing of the summer.

He was prolific in the 2020/21 season as he bagged 20 goals for Leyton Orient in Sky Bet League Two.

Johnson started his career in League Two making his professional league debut back in October 2014 for Tranmere Rovers in a 0-0 draw against Mansfield.

During his debut season in the Football League, where he spent some time with Stevenage on loan, Johnson made nine appearances in all competitions scoring one goal which came in the then named Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

After just one season with Tranmere, Johnson moved to Gateshead where he would spend three seasons.

In his first campaign with The Heed, he found the back of the net 13 times in the National League, including one against his former side.

He continued to show his goal scoring touch during his second season with Gateshead as he netted a further 18 goals in 38 appearances for them, taking his total of the two seasons to 31 goals in 74 games.

Johnson’s third and final season with Gateshead again saw him in fine form in front of goal, this time scoring 14 goals meaning he scored 45 goals in 111 games.

In the summer of 2018, Johnson moved to Scotland, firstly with Motherwell. During his only season with them, he scored eight times in 28 league and cup matches, including goals against Celtic and Rangers.

His time with Motherwell came to an end at the close of the season as he moved to Dundee where he would spend the first six months of the season, scoring seven goals in 22 games before completing a move to League Two side Leyton Orient.

The forward finished the 2019/20 season with two goals in two appearances for Orient and continued his fine form in front of goal in the 2020/21 season, netting eight goals in the opening 10 games of the campaign, eventually going on to score 20 goals that season.

On his move to the Saddlers, Johnson is looking forward to the season starting and is hoping to have another productive season on the goal scoring front.

“I’m delighted to be here,” he said.

“After speaking to the gaffer, he made me feel wanted to come down and play some games.

“I’m a poacher, stick me in and around the box, give me the ball and I back myself to put the ball in the back of the net.

“I like to score goals for the team and that’s what I think I can bring to the Club.”

Saddlers Head Coach Michael Flynn expressed his delight at adding Johnson to his squad and he can’t wait to work with what he describes as a natural goal scorer.

“I’m really pleased to have Danny in the building,” Flynn said.

“He’s a proven scorer at this level and he’s shown a desire to come and play games for us.

“I’d like to thank Trivela and Leigh for their support and also Nigel Clough and David Sharpe.”

Walsall have a striker in their sights this summer, with Alan Nixon reporting via his Patreon that they are planning a bid for Mansfield’s Danny Johnson.

The club are currently in League Two and are preparing for a campaign in the fourth tier and will need some more goals in their ranks if they want to try and push up the division.

Now, they are preparing a raid on their divisional rivals Mansfield for Johnson. The 29-year-old might be available too, with the player managing a total of just nine starts for Town during the last campaign. It resulted in just four goals and one assist throughout the campaign for his side.
