Stags sign new goalkeeper
mansfieldtown.net, Tuesday 12th July 2022

Mansfield Town are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Christy Pym on loan from Peterborough United until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 27-year-old shot-stopper spent the second half of last season on loan at Sky Bet League Two side Stevenage, making 23 appearances.

Pym started his career at Exeter City where he played 151 times across seven years in Devon.

In July 2019, the ‘keeper left the Grecians and signed for Sky Bet League One outfit Peterborough.

The Exeter-born player won the Sky Bet League One ‘Golden Glove’ award in 2019/20, keeping 15 clean sheets in an excellent season in Cambridgeshire.

Pym appeared 82 times for the Posh before his loan move to Stevenage earlier this year.

Manager Nigel Clough said: “Christy’s been at the top of our list for the last couple of months, since we knew Bish (Nathan Bishop) wasn’t staying, so we’re delighted to have him on board.

“He’s an experienced goalkeeper and it’ll be good to have him and Scott Flinders in the squad.

“Their experience will also aid the development of Owen Mason.”

After the game at Matlock, Nigel Clough told iFollow Stags:

“We’re delighted with the two goalkeepers we’ve brought in and to work with young Owen Mason as well who will be the third choice and probably go out on loan.

“Christy has come in to play so we’ll have a look at him on Saturday.

“It’s like any other position; yes, we can start with a number one in mind but depending on form and things like that it’s not a guarantee to keep your place.

“If he [Pym] does well, he’ll keep his place.

“We did bring Scott in to challenge who we brought in, but I think he’s done well enough in pre-season to suggest he can have the number one shirt if we needed it.”

I’ve been itching to get here - Pym
mansfieldtown.net, Tuesday 12th July 2022

New Mansfield Town goalkeeper Christy Pym says he’s been ‘itching’ to join the club after signing on a season-long loan deal from Peterborough United yesterday.

The 27-year-old shot-stopper was a long-running transfer target for boss Nigel Clough and is happy to finally get the deal signed.

The Exeter-born ‘keeper joins with experience of playing in the Championship, Sky Bet League One and Sky Bet League Two.

Speaking to iFollow Stags after putting pen to paper on a loan deal at the club, Mansfield’s latest recruit said: “I’m very happy to get it done.

“It [the move] took a lot of time to get done in the end.

“I knew about the interest [from Mansfield] quite early on after the season finished so I was itching to get here.

“I’m happy to be here now and can’t wait to get started.”

Pym has played at One Call Stadium on numerous occasions as an opposition player - most recently last season on loan at Stevenage.

“It’s a good club,” said the goalkeeper.

“I played here at the back end of last season when I was on loan at Stevenage and there’s a good atmosphere [at One Call Stadium and] a great crowd.

“I know the setup; the setup is good.

“There’s a good manager and a good squad [here], hopefully this year we can go one step further [than last season].

“I’ve played here a few times.

“It’s always a tough game when you play Mansfield so hopefully that can continue this year.”

On his specific strengths as a ‘keeper, Pym said: “I like the ball at my feet, I’m comfortable with it at my feet.

“I’m a good shot-stopper [and I’m] calm.

“Being calm is probably my biggest thing [attribute].

“I like to think I give a nice calming influence to the team which I think is very important for a goalkeeper.”

Pym joins Scott Flinders in signing as a first team goalkeeper for the Stags this summer. Despite wanting to play, the on-loan Posh man says it won’t be a formality that he starts ahead of the experienced former Cheltenham number one.

“I’ve come here wanting to play but wherever you’ve got to compete,” he said.

“Scott [Flinders] has had a good career and is a very good goalkeeper.

“[He’s] Very experienced.

“The goalkeeping unit is a very close-knit group.

“We’ll get on well [Pym and Flinders], we’ll push each other and may the best man win.”

“I know the setup; the setup is good. There’s a good manager and a good squad.

Peterborough United goalkeeper drops down into League Two
Peterborough Telegraph, By John Lomas, Tuesday 12th July 2022

Peterborough United have loaned goalkeeper Christy Pym to League Two side Mansfield Town for the 2022-23 season.

The Peterborough Telegraph reported earlier this month that Mansfield was the preferred destination for a 27 year-old who had attracted the attention of several fourth tier clubs.

The Stags have now reached an agreement with Posh for a player who played 40 games in the promotion from League One in the 2020-21 season. He fell out with former Posh boss Darren Ferguson early into last season and finished the campaign on loan at Stevenage.

"It’s a good move for Christy as I believe Mansfield have a great chance of going up,” Posh director of football Barry Fry said. “It’s also a good move for us as it gets Christy off our wage bill and into the shop window.”

“Christy’s been at the top of our list for the last couple of months,” Mansfield manager Nigel Clough added. “He’s an experienced goalkeeper and it’ll be good to have him in our squad.”

Posh formally placed Pym on the transfer list before signing two goalkeepers - Lucas Bergstrom from Chelsea and Harvey Cartwright from Hull - on season-long loans.

Pym signed for Posh from Exeter City on a free transfer in July, 2019. He made 94 Posh appearances and now joins the team who are fourth favourites for the League Two title at 10/1.

Mansfield lost in the League Two play-off final 3-0 to Port Vale at Wembley last season.

EARLIER STORY:

Peterborough United goalkeeper keen on move to Mansfield Town
Peterborough Telegraph AND chad.co.uk, By Alan Swann, Tuesday 28th June 2022

Peterborough United goalkeeper Christy Pym is keen on a move to League Two promotion fancies Mansfield Town.

Pym was effectively placed on the transfer list 10 months ago after falling out with former Posh boss Darren Ferguson. A change of manager to Grant McCann made no difference to Pym’s future and he has been given permission to talk to four League Two clubs.

Mansfield - currently 10-1 fourth favourites for the League Two title - are one of those and Field Mill is Pym’s preferred destination.

But the Stags have yet to come up with a deal agreeable to Posh.

https://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/peterborough-united-goalkeeper-keen-on-move-to-mansfield-town-3748288

Posh director of football Barry Fry said: “Mansfield want Christy and he has spoken to them along with three others clubs. He wants to go there, but Mansfield have yet to come up with an offer that suits us.

"Their manager Nigel Clough is due back from holiday this week so things might move on then.”

Posh want a fee for 27 year-old Pym even though he is surplus to requirements. He was one of several League One promotion winners to sign extended contracts at the Weston Homes Stadium last summer.

Posh have signed two goalkeepers on loan for the season, Harvey Cartwright from Hull City and Lucas Bergstrom from Chelsea.
