CLOUGH ON SCOTLAND CAMP,+ WILL SWAN,DYLAN McGEOUCH

Nigel Clough talks to iFollow Stags at the end of an intensive week of pre-season training at St Andrews in Scotland:

“It’s been a good few days. Unfortunately we’ve picked up two or three knocks, a few lads won't be available for Retford on Saturday: James Perch, Kieran Wallace and Elliott Hewitt. Minor knocks which you always pick up at this time of the year. Hopefully Perchy will be ok for Tuesday, Kieran maybe Saturday, Elliott a couple of weeks.”

On Dylan McGeouch on trial during the week: “His agent phoned Simon (Clough). He said 'he’s only an hour up the road, can he come and do some training with you?'
He’s a very good player, very neat and tidy. The only problem is we’ve got six midfielders at the moment. So I don’t think we’ll be able to do anything with him. But we’ve offered him another week with us next week if he wants to play some games.”

On transfers: “We’re working on a goalkeeper still, working on a striker. David (Sharpe) and Simon (Clough) are back in Mansfield doing that.

“And a loan striker which we hope to have, Will Swan in from Nottingham Forest, in time for the game at Retford. Everything’s agreed now, paperwork’s been done. So if he doesn’t make it for Saturday, he’ll be in training Monday and play at Matlock on Tuesday.

“We’ve got another loan hopefully lined up from Forest. That will take a bit longer because he’s gone away with them pre-season, but we’re still hoping to get that one done.

“And we’re chasing another striker or forward player, as well as the goalkeeper.

“The goalkeeper is not too far away. The striker might be under contract so we might be paying a small fee, we’ll see how it goes.

“I think the most important thing was keeping the nucleus of the squad together, which we’ve just about done. It didn’t need major surgery after last season’s exploits, we were so close to achieving our aim, when the team played so well from October onwards.

“We’ve had a bit of interest from a club for Danny Johnson, so we’ll see how that progresses next week. He’s been good in training this week. I don’t think he’ll feature at Retford just if something’s imminent.”

The midfielder has linked up with the Mansfield squad in St Andrews for their pre-season camp.

Former Aberdeen midfielder Dylan McGeouch has joined English League Two side Mansfield Town's pre-season training camp.

The 29-year-old was released by the Dons at the end of last season following the expiry of his contract, writes Football Scotland. And now Nigel Clough has handed him the chance to impress, with the Stags currently in St Andrews for their 2022/23 pre-season camp.

McGeouch started his career at Celtic before joining Hibs on a permanent deal after a successful loan stint. He played the best football of his career at Easter Road, helping the club to an historic Scottish Cup Final triumph.

A move to Sunderland in 2018 didn't quite work out and he returned to Scotland with Aberdeen two years later. But after making just nine starts for the Pittodrie side last season, the ex-Scotland international will be keen to kickstart his career elsewhere.
