Midfielder Stephen Quinn has signed a new one-year contract at One Call Stadium.

The 36-year-old played a key role in the Stags’ season of progress last term, making 43 appearances in all competitions.

Manager Nigel Clough said: “I thought he had an outstanding season and I’m delighted he’s re-signed.

“Although he may not be playing 40, 50 games next year, he will still be a great influence on and off the pitch.

“Our supporters love watching that sort of player and the passion that he emanates is contagious throughout the dressing room.”

Big boost for Mansfield Town as veteran star Stephen Quinn agrees to sign for another season
chad.co.uk, By John Lomas, Monday 27th June 2022

Mansfield Town were today given another huge boost when veteran star Stephen Quinn agreed to stay for another season.

The 36-year-old former Irish international and Premier League midfielder was one of the Stags' best performers last season as they made it all the way to the League Two play-off final and boss Nigel Clough said: “I am delighted he is staying.

“He has a decision to make each year - does he want to keep playing first of all?

“He pretty much packed in two or three years ago before coming to Burton with us.

“But I thought he had an outstanding season and, although he might not be playing 40-50 games next season, he will still be a great influence for us on and off the pitch.

“He is one of those players that supporters love watching with the passion that emanates from him - and it is contagious throughout the dressing room.”

Quinn follows fellow veterans Jordan Bowery and James Perch into committing to another season at the One Call Stadium this summer.

“They were important signings,” said Clough. “Jordan has committed for another couple of years and Perchy just for another year.

“What we don't like to do is bring in 10-12 players - it is a lot to integrate.

“You have to at certain stages. But once you think you've got that nucleus of a squad - which we think we have - it's just about bringing four or five in and freshening up and just improving the squad in certain areas. That's what it will be this season.

“There is no need after the season we've had to have wholesale changes. It's just a few coming in to strengthen again.”

He added: “There is always a few going out - that is inevitable in football. But you've got to keep that balance right. You have to have the likes of Jordan and Perchy around as they are key players.

“They are all getting on a little bit now, especially Perchy and Quinny, but we can't get better than them. They are good players who have played at the highest level.

“There is a reason you only get them at that sort of age - 34/35 or whatever. It's because they've been playing at a much higher level earlier in their careers. But it's still great to have them.”

Optimism around the town is at an all-time high with a record 3,600 season tickets already snapped up by fans.

Stephen Quinn confident Mansfield Town can come back stronger after Port Vale defeat
chad.co.uk, By Stephen Thirkill, Tuesday 5th July 2022

Stephen Quinn is confident Mansfield can come back even stronger after last season’s play-off final defeat.

The Irish midfielder believes Stags can channel the pain of the Port Vale defeat and use it as a positive learning experience for the tough season ahead.

“It hasn’t been a long off-season, but it is nice to see the lads again and the ball,” he said.

“The spirits are good. Football moves fast and we can’t dwell on what happened.

“The lads are really switched on this season. Training is intense already but it is good and I’m enjoying it.

“Mental resilience along with the physical side of it will be key this season.

“When bodies are depleted in mid January it takes resilience to come back from the lows and to stay level. The strongest survive.

“Last season was an experience we can all take on board, from the early lows to the highs of getting to Wembley and just missing out.

“It's all experience for the lads and the fans as well. I can't wait to go again.”

Quinn signed a new deal with the club this week and admitted he is desperate to see Stags continue their progression and finally bag a spot in League One.

“We want to continue our progression and I'm delighted to have signed another deal,” he added.

“I flew away the day after the play-off final, but it was never in doubt once the manager wanted to keep me.

“I didn't want to finish on the Wembley defeat. The structure of the club, the players that are here, the style of play, the fans, the manager - it all made me want to stay.

“Other clubs were knocking, but it was never in doubt I was going to stay. I love it here. I want to kick on and get this club into League One.

“It's something I have a burning desire for, I really want to get the club up the divisions.”

Stags will be backed by big crowds next season after smashing through the 4,000 season-tickets sold barrier.

And it is a level of support that Quinn knows will be crucial in helping Mansfield match their season ambitions.

He added. “The season-ticket sales and the atmosphere we had last season is something we can build on.

“The encouragement from the fans and the atmosphere we had at the club last season was special.

“The fans were with us when we struggled and it was massive. There was a buzz around the place.

“It was an unreal run in and you could feel the atmosphere and the connection with the fans. If you’re going to do anything in the game then the fans are a massive part of it.”

other parts of the interview from iFollow Stags:

"Obviously my sending off didn't help.

"But I came back feeling really good. We went on that massive run which was brilliant.

"I felt a little bit tired towards the end of the season. I was carrying a little niggle which didn't help me.

"But physically I feel fine now. Maybe the gaffer might have to manage me a bit better this season I'm not sure. But I'll never not want to play so I'll try and always be available and give my all for the club."
