Nigel Clough told iFollow Stags:

“James Perch got 90 minutes [under his belt] which was very important, Danny Johnson as well,” the boss said.

"It was the first 90 minutes for James Perch since his injury. It was quite comfortable for him, which is good, against a good Leeds side with some brilliant youngsters, so it was a good test for us.

“Kieran Wallace played about 80 minutes; Jason Law got 90 minutes.

“We’ve just sort of topped them up with their fitness.

“It was ideal [for them to feature] against a good, young Leeds team.”

Striker Danny Johnson scored the Stags’ only goal of the game as he boosted his match fitness.

“He got a goal. He had two or three chances but tucked one away.

“He always looks likely to score when he’s on the pitch.”

"You can only play 3 overage outfielders and a goalkeeper otherwise one or two more might have had a game.

Nigel Clough believes Mansfield Town academy can be a huge asset to the club for years to come

He said: “It’s absolutely vital to either get them involved in games or training and things like that. It’s the best way to aid their development and to speed it up.

“We’ve always put great emphasis on the academy wherever we’ve been, and doing our best to get the balance between producing young players and then getting the first team on the pitch as well that can compete.

“The two aren’t always compatible. At Derby we had to be patient because academies take time to really flourish and get players coming through.

"I think this place [the RH Academy] is only about three years old and it’ll take maybe four or five years for the academy to really make a difference since moving here, but we’re delighted with how they’re working and we may have a couple more become pros next year, but it can take almost a five or six-year cycle to make things work.”

Senior professionals’ experience is ‘invaluable’ - Whitlow
mansfieldtown.net

Mansfield Town player development phase lead coach Mike Whitlow believes the experience of some of the club’s senior professionals was ‘invaluable’ for the younger members of the under-23s’ squad that faced Leeds this afternoon.

The Stags’ line-up featured numerous first-team players including James Perch, Kieran Wallace, Danny Johnson and Marek Stech as well as some under-18s in midfielder Charlie Carter, defender Cody Collins and full-back Darrien Wauchope in the 1-1 draw at RH Academy.

Speaking post-match, the coach said: “For the young lads, having James Perch [in the team] with his experience, Kieran [Wallace] in front and Danny [Johnson] with Jason [Law] and a few of the younger pros [is great for the youth players’ development].

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2022/march/match-report-for-mansfield-town-vs-leeds-united-u23-on-07-mar-22/

“Having James Perch is invaluable to a young centre-half like Cody Collins to play next to him. His [Perch’s] experience and his talking [is beneficial].

“Kieran Wallace was in front [of Perch], next to Charlie Carter who is a first-year scholar.

“Darrien [Wauchope] is a first-year scholar at left-back.

“They’re [the youth team players] playing with these players and they can only pick up good habits from them.

“To limit them [the opposition, to few chances] comes from communication, it comes from organisation, and I think as a group of players they worked their socks off.

“They [the Mansfield XI], in my opinion, deserved to come away [from the match] with a win today.”

The Stags took the lead on 30 minutes courtesy of a well-worked move with Jason Law turning and combining well with striker Danny Johnson before the former Leyton Orient man coolly slotted the ball home.

“[It was] A key moment: we went ahead,” said the PDP lead coach.

“We scored a really good goal.

“We created numerous opportunities, and we were on the front foot.”

Mansfield began the second-half in confident fashion. Young professionals Jason Law and Nathan Caine combined well before the latter saw a deflected effort go narrowly wide of the Leeds goal.

“[In the second-half] We were in the ascendancy for 15-20 minutes,” said Mike.

“We’ve created enough opportunities and chances to come away with more than just the one goal today.”

Leeds hit back on 70 minutes with a well-worked corner that found its way to Littlewood who tapped home to level the contest.

“We get caught out on a set-play which was good from them because of the movement but bad from us in getting caught out,” Mike said.

“[Minutes later,] Marek’s made a key save in which he’s tipped one onto the bar from a shot from long distance.”

The PDP lead coach was pleased with the attitudes of the Mansfield side this afternoon.

“I can’t fault the work ethic,” he said.

“I can’t fault the lads’ attitudes and how it was played but disappointed how we conceded.

“It was very good test today against a very young, youthful and energetic Leeds team that are technically very, very good.

“All you can ask a team that has come together today is ‘can the experienced ones help the younger ones?’

“‘Can the younger ones put a shift in with intensity and play at the level [required]?’

“They’ve worked hard this year [the younger players]. They’ve had opportunities in the under-23s’ games quite a lot.

“I think it’s invaluable for them to be tested at this level and for them to have a James Perch alongside, have a Kieran Wallace [alongside] and go play with [some of] those that are trying to get in and around the first-team.

“Honestly, it’s a great experience and I can’t ask any more in terms of effort, I’m just disappointed, for them, that they didn’t get the reward in which I honestly thought we had enough situations to win the game.”

Leeds United Under-23s went into their final Premier League Cup fixture knowing that a point would be enough to see them quality from Group E, into the knock-out stages. Thanks to Joe Littlewood’s second half equaliser, that’s exactly what they got to go through.

The match was the first one in charge for newly-appointed Andy Taylor, who takes over until the end of the 2021/22 season from Mark Jackson, following his progressing up to the first team coaching staff.

This Cup clash was being played away at Mansfield at the third time of asking, after the previous two clashes were postponed due to the adverse weather conditions that had a major impact on the UK throughout February.

Getting underway with windy conditions in Nottinghamshire, there were very few early chances. The first keeper to be tested was Dani Van Den Heuvel and he made a smart save at his near post to deny Danny Johnson’s low shot.

Leeds went even closer moments later. Ever lively up top, Max Dean controlled and turned his man brilliantly before unleashing a curling effort at goal. With Marek Stech well beaten in goal for the Stags, the post wasn’t, as the ball clipped the upright and went wide.

Johnson would then go close again for the home side, before his next effort put Mansfield ahead. The forward found space in the box from a clever move and finished well to give his side the advantage.

Looking to respond, Taylor’s team had chances to get level. Dean was continuing to cause problems up top, whilst both Stuart McKinstry and Amari Miller put shots over the bar from the edge of the box, before the whistle went for the interval.

HALF TIME: Mansfield Town 1-0 Leeds United

The Whites came out in the second half knowing they needed a response if they were to continue within the competition. The permutations of the table meant that Mansfield also needed to not only win, but get a second goal to overtake Leeds on goal-difference.

Neither team made a change as both went in search of vital goals that would send them into the knock-out stages. Mansfield’s Jason Law had two early efforts on goal, but powered both of his free-kick opportunities over the bar.

Leeds responded with Liam McCarron charging forward into the box, beating multiple challenges on the way. When he created a shooting opportunity though the full-back fired well over the bar.

United did find the leveller their play had deserved just under 20 minutes from time. McKinstry’s clever corner routine found the impressive Kris Moore at the near-post and he flicked the ball goalwards, finding Littlewood who was alert to turn home at close range.

With just under 10 minutes remaining, Leeds nearly extended their advantage further. Charlie Allen struck the crossbar with a composed curling effort, and seconds later Dean’s quick shot went into the side netting.

The match continued to provide chances but no further goals came, meaning Leeds United’s Under-23s progressed into the knock-out stages of the Premier League Cup.

Mansfield Town 1-1 Leeds United under 23s: Whites advance in Premier League Cup as Andy Taylor era begins
Leeds United are through to the knockout stage of the Premier League Cup following a 1-1 away draw at Mansfield Town on Monday afternoon.
yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, By Flora Snelson, Monday 7th March 2022

Centre-back Joe Littlewood finished off a clever corner routine to equalise for Leeds after the Whites were overrun by the hosts for the opening hour.

Mansfield took the lead through Danny Johnson on the half hour mark as the Whites came under the cosh on a sunny afternoon in Nottinghamshire.

The Stags' 1-0 lead was not enough to take them through, and the Midlands side were aggressive in pursuit of a second but Leeds held on.

On his first game in charge, Under 23s boss Andy Taylor made decisive substitutions, as Mateo Joseph quickly gave a boost to the visitors' attack after he was brought on midway through the second half.

After earning a point in Mansfield, Leeds end Group E in second place and advance to the next round of the competition, when they'll face West Ham United.

The game got off to a scrappy start, with passes going astray on both sides. With possession changing hands quickly, chances were few and far between, with long range efforts at either end from Jaden Charles and Max Dean, each whistling past the posts, the closest either team came to taking a lead in the early stages.

Johnson squandered a huge chance to put the hosts ahead in the 27th minute. Nathan Caine escaped the challenge of Joe Snowdon to play through the Stags' forward. Advancing on the six yard box with just Dani van den Heuvel to beat, Johnson put the ball wide.

Minutes later, Johnson corrected his error. Caine and Jason Law linked up nicely on the edge of the box and Law played a neat ball through to Johnson, who made no mistake this time, tucking the ball past van den Heuvel to open the scoring for the home side.

Leeds were put under increasing pressure as the half went on. Mansfield forced mistakes by pressing high but couldn't extend their lead, with the scoreline 1-0 at half time.

The Whites struggled in the early stages of the second half as Mansfield kept them penned into their own half.

Liam McCarron created a dangerous opportunity around the hour mark, wiggling past three Mansfield players on the left flank to find space in the box. One on one with Stages 'keeper Marek Stech, McCarron opted to shoot, though several of his teammates were waiting in the box. His shot flew over the bar.

The introduction of Joseph in the 68th gave an instant boost to the Whites' attack. The Spaniard linked up nicely with Dean to win a corner for Leeds. McKinstry delivered it low into the box, with Dean flicking it on to United centre back Littlewood who poked it home to equalise.

Leeds looked visibly confident after the leveller as Mansfield were forced to chase the game to keep hopes of cup progress alive. The hosts' chances were limited to another long range effort by Charles.

From a Whites corner Leeds came agonisingly close to grabbing a winner with a pair of big chances. After Stech palmed the corner away, Allen hooked the ball across him toward the top corner but it glanced just over the bar. From the following goal kick, Leeds claimed possession and found Dean in space in the box, but the striker's effort went wide.

Leeds United XI v Mansfield: van den Heuvel, Sutcliffe, Littlewood, Moore, McCarron (72 - Carole), Jenkins, Snowdon, McKinstry, Allen, Miller (68 - Joseph), Dean.

Leeds unused subs: Christy, Coleman, Hughes.

Mansfield XI: Stech, Charles, Perch, Collins, Wauchope, Wallace (75 - Davies), Carter, Law, Johnson, Scott (87 - Deakin), Caine (70 - Kruszynski).

Mansfield unused subs: Mason, Pitt.
