It was a superb evening’s work for Wigan Athletic U23s as they earned a 2-0 victory at Mansfield Town U23s to finish at the top of their Premier League Cup group on Wednesday night.

Goals from Dean Pinnington and Divin Baningime in either half were enough to help Latics earn all three points at the Moor Farm Training Centre despite a late strike from Jason Law. The win helped Latics record their third win in four matches and qualify for the next round for the Premier League Cup as the winners of Group E.

Peter Murphy’s side headed into the fixture knowing that a draw would be enough to confirm their place as the group winners. Latics made two changes from their 2-2 draw at Sunderland last Monday evening with Steven Sumner and Arthur Lomax coming into the starting XI in place of Sam Owens and Tom Costello.

Mansfield Town, on the other hand, came into their penultimate group stage game with the knowledge that a victory could be vital in their own bid to qualify for the next round. Former Latics defender James Perch started for the Stags on his road to recovery as well as fellow first-teamers Marek Stech, Kieran Wallace, Danny Johnson and Law.

It was the visitors who flexed their muscles first when Pinnington played in the overlapping Kieran Lloyd on the right-hand side with the latter’s cross finding Baningime six yards out but Perch did enough to deal with the danger.

Mansfield had their first sighting on goal in the fifth minute after Johnson turned with the ball on the edge of the area and dragged his effort just wide of the near post.

The home side’s early chance set the tone for the opening exchange and Nathan Caine curled his effort over the crossbar from a wide position just two minutes later. Joshua Scott was then freed into space by Caine who lined up a powerful shot from the edge of the area but Latics goalkeeper Sam Tickle got down low to his right and parried the ball away from danger.

The game began to open up and Latics came close through Pinnington after he was released on the right channel following Baningime’s outstanding driving run, but his low effort was expertly turned around the post by experienced EFL goalkeeper Stech. At the other end, Law’s shot ricocheted into the path of Johnson whose snapshot looked destined for the bottom corner but Tickle reacted quickly to make the save with his standing leg.

Latics then opened the scoring in the 24th minute through Pinnington’s second goal of the season. The attacking midfielder showed excellent determination and desire to intercept a loose pass just inside the opposition half before driving forward and rifling his low effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. It was a fine finish and one of real quality to break the deadlock!

Mansfield looked to hit back straight away in the Premier League Cup fixture and almost got back on level terms when Johnson cut his low shot across the face of the goal, but Tickle was more than equal to prevent the effort.

Big opportunities continued to fall to the Stags as after Law’s fierce effort was superbly blocked behind by Sumner, Perch then headed over the crossbar after climbing the highest to meet the resulting corner.

There was however time for one final chance for Latics in the first half as Lomax battled to force the ball through to Pinnington inside the penalty area but the 19-year-old could not add to his earlier goal as he steered his effort wide.

Latics started the second half in the same manner that they finished the first and Lomax was involved once again after he managed to strike a loose ball sweetly towards goal from the edge of the area but his shot was well saved by Stech.

Chances came at a premium as both sides battled to gain the ascendancy during the start of the second half, though Latics had to remain alert after Ryan Burke threatened twice in quick succession for the hosts on the hour mark. Law switched the play to find Burke on the far side who took a touch before firing on goal but Tickle showed great reflexes to tip the ball around the post. The danger was not yet over as Burke then lept to meet Jaden Charles’ corner, but his header sailed over.

Latics doubled their lead with just 15 minutes remaining at the Moor Farm Training Centre after Baningime finished a well-worked move that he started. Baningime burst clear on the left-hand side before sending Pinnington through on goal who was expertly denied by Stech, but the 21-year-old showed excellent anticipation to follow up the rebound and tap home into the empty net.

Mansfield Town responded well to conceding and almost narrowed the visitors’ lead in the 83rd minute when Darien Wauchope’s low cross was swept goalwards by fellow substitute Jakub Kruszynski but Tickle got a strong hand to make a crucial save for Murphy’s men.

The hosts did eventually pull a goal back in the final minute of stoppage time through Law’s accurate finish however Latics defended resiliently to see out the game and earn an impressive victory in their final Premier League Cup group stage outing. The win meant that Latics topped Group E and will be merited with a home tie in the next round.

After their incredible success in the Premier League Cup, attention will now quickly turn to Monday when they host Sheffield Wednesday U23s in the Professional Development League at Christopher Park.

Latics: Tickle, Lloyd, Sobowale (Brooks 90+3), Sumner, Long (Capt), McGee, Pinnington, McHugh (Payne 65), Sze (Welsh 58), Lomax, Baningime.

Subs: Mooney, Owens.
