Mansfield Town are delighted to announce the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff on loan until the end of the season.

A product of the Newcastle United academy, Matty joins the Stags with good pedigree having scored twice for the Toon in 14 Premier League appearances.

The 21-year-old made his debut for the Magpies in August 2019 against Leicester City in the EFL Cup.

Two months later, the midfielder secured a Premier League Goal of the Month award for an outstanding strike against Manchester United at St. James’ Park.

Matty scored against the Red Devils for a second time in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford.

The Rotherham-born maestro signed a contract extension with Newcastle at the end of the 19-20 season, playing alongside his older brother Sean.

In August 2021, Matty joined Aberdeen on loan. After five appearances with the Dons, he returned to Newcastle.

“To get a good midfielder with Premier League experience is a coup for us,” Stags’ boss Nigel Clough.

“We’re looking forward to working with Matty and get him playing some regular football.

“Having let Harry Charsley go to Port Vale, it’s a good reinforcement for us in the midfield area.”

Nigel Clough later told Colin Hazelden of BBC, video on iFollow Stags, 7 Feb 2022:
on the transfer deadline day deals:

"What we don't want to do is give the impression that we're splashing money, because the two players that have come in, have saved us money on the two or three that have gone out."

(Comment by Martin: presumably referring to: in: Longstaff, Murphy; out Charsley, O'Keeffe. I think this strongly suggests that we are not paying Longstaff's wages.)

Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough declared himself 'absolutely delighted' with his January transfer business and said the shock Matty Longstaff deal had come about through a contact of club CEO David Sharpe.

After signing John-Joe O'Toole, Lucas Akins and Keiran Wallace, Stags stunned their promotion rivals with the late additions of Newcastle United starlet midfielder Longstaff and former Scottish international forward Jamie Murphy.

Clough explained: “It was a contact from David Sharpe that came on pretty late in the afternoon and said Matty had been lined up to go somewhere else but it hadn't happened and we got a shout - would you like to take him?

“Newcastle have been very fair and said they need him to go out and play. He's been at Aberdeen, but not played as many times as they'd hoped.

“The level is irrelevant. He just needs to start playing football again.

“He's been away with Newcastle abroad last week and done a lot of training out there and will now be in with us. He will hopefully supplement our midfield and it's games like tonight I wish we could have had him for those fresh legs.”

After a 0-0 draw at Harrogate Town, Clough said: “Matty can provide the sort of quality in these games that can make the difference.

“He is 21, but he's only played 19 league games in his career so he needs to come and play some football.

“But he has a lot of competition in there. I was telling him on the phone that we do knock it about for a League Two side, but he probably doubts that after seeing us tonight.”

On January as a whole, he said: “I am absolutely delighted. We didn't really want to lose Harry Charsley but in the end we've got Matty Longstaff in.

Nigel Clough told Craig Priest for Mansfield 103.2 about transfer deadline day:
"David (Sharpe) and Simon (Clough) were working very long hours in the office. I was on the end of the phone. It went right to the wire in the end. I think we finished the phonecalls about quarter to 12, 12 o'clock, something like that.

Matty Longstaff told iFollow Stags, Thur 3 Feb 2022

“It’s been great. The manager's been great. It’s good to meet all my teammates and I’ve really enjoyed training. It was good to get playing with them. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
"I spoke with Newcastle and my agent and (they) said Mansfield were interested. I got on the phone with the gaffer, he spoke about what a great run it had been and hopefully getting promoted, and about the bunch of lads that are here.
"Once he said that I jumped at the opportunity and came straight here.
"Hopefully we can get promoted and I can be a part of it.
"The biggest thing is you want to go places and win. We've got a chance of going up and that's the biggest thing when you've got something to play for late in the season.
"Hopefully I'll play plenty of games and get myself going again. The last year or so I haven't played as much as I would have liked.
"Hopefully I can come here and help the team, and hopefully we can get promoted. Hopefully I can have a bit of quality and a bit of energy.
"I've trained this morning and the quality (of the squad) was high.
"I grew up a Newcastle fan, so to get that moment (scoring against Man Utd) was unbelievable and I’ve had some great years at Newcastle, but I’m now looking forward to being here and getting started.
“I’m sure Shola Ameobi (the loan manager there), will be on the phone non-stop and my brother’s already been asking how training has gone.
“You have to fight for your place in the team at all clubs and once you get in you’ve got to take the opportunity. I hope to bring a bit of quality and energy to the team but whatever it needs I’m happy to do it.
“I’ve trained with the lads and watched the game with Harrogate which was a battle, with the wind playing a big part, but I think the lads did well so I know I’ll have to come here and fight for my place and hopefully I’ll do well.
(On his loan at Aberdeen) “It was an eye-opener as it was the first time I’d been out on loan. You get to see a different type of game but everything happens for a reason and now that I’ve been there and seen it I’m looking forward to getting going here.
“The Premier League is very technical and a lot about movement on and off the ball, but in Scotland it becomes a lot more of a fight and there’s probably not as much quality there as there is in the Premier League, so you kind of get used to that.
“I’m expecting a bit of both in League Two. I’ve trained with the lads and they’ve got great quality and I’m expecting a bit of fight too.
“I’ve watched my brother play in League One a couple of years ago (with Blackpool) and I think it’ll be very similar as they’re always tough games and never easy to play in.
“Hopefully I get to play plenty of games and get myself going again. I haven’t played as much as I would have liked over the last year but hopefully I can come here and help the team and hopefully we can get promoted and that’ll be great for the club and the fans.”

Why Matty Longstaff trained with Newcastle United despite Mansfield Town loan
Matty Longstaff trained with Newcastle United as Eddie Howe led a session at St James' Park

chroniclelive.co.uk, By Chris Knight, Fri 4 Feb 2022

Matty Longstaff was 'allowed' to train with Newcastle United despite his deadline-day loan switch to Mansfield Town as the League Two side do not have a match this weekend.

The Magpies academy graduate returned from a disappointing loan spell at Aberdeen last month, and was allowed to join the Stags on Monday until the end of the season.

However, Nigel Clough's side are not in action this weekend with their next match at home to Colchester on Tuesday.

It was this lack of a fixture which meant the Stags were happy to allow Longstaff to train with Eddie Howe's side at St James' Park on Friday, where new signing Bruno Guimaraes was introduced to his new team-mates.

The decision was explained on Newcastle's training gallery of the session, which also saw deadline-day arrivals Dan Burn and Matt Targett feature.

The statement read: "Matty Longstaff took part in the session despite joining Mansfield Town on loan on Monday.

"The Stags are without a game this weekend, so allowed Longstaff to train with his parent club before preparations begin in earnest for their home clash with Colchester next week."

Matty Longstaff has joined Mansfield Town on loan for the rest of the season.

The Stags, whose squad includes former Magpies midfielder James Perch, are currently sixth in League Two under Nigel Clough.

Former England under-20 international Longstaff has made 20 appearances for the Magpies - 14 of them in the Premier League - and spent the first part of the season on loan with Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen.

The 21-year-old progressed through the ranks with his boyhood club and burst onto the scene with the winner against Manchester United on his Premier League debut in October 2019 - one of three goals he scored in his breakthrough campaign.

He made only five appearances last term following a long-term injury but signed a contract extension at St. James' Park in the summer before moving to Aberdeen.

Longstaff joins LEAGUE TWO Mansfield on loan transfer after disastrous Aberdeen spell
by Joshua Jones, 23:35, 31 Jan 2022

The Toon midfielder, 21, endured a torrid temporary spell at Aberdeen in the first half of the season.

He managed just five appearances for the Dons before being recalled in December.

Now he has made the shock move to the East Midlands.

Nigel Clough's Stags sit sixth in the fourth tier, just three points off the automatic promotion places.

And now they have Longstaff to bolster their charge.

The two-cap England Under-20 international burst on to the scene aged 19.

He scored a stunning winner against Manchester United on his Premier League debut at St James' Park.

His sweet drive from the edge of the D flew past David De Gea into the bottom corner and secured a famous 1-0 win for the club he joined aged as a youngster.

And it also earned the then-teenager the October 2019 Premier League goal of the month award.

Longstaff, younger brother of fellow Magpies ace Sean, signed a new contract in 2020 but that expires at the end of this season as his career hit the brakes.

He still has just 30 senior appearances to his name.

Report: Everton now want Nottingham Forest linked Newcastle player
August 18, 2021, by Lee Clarke

Matty Longstaff is a target for Nottingham Forest but he’s also wanted by Everton, according to a print edition of The Mirror (Page 54).

The Newcastle United midfielder has fallen way down the pecking order under Steve Bruce. He made just five appearances in the Premier League last season and was often not included in the squad.

Now, the manager is prepared to let him go on loan. Several Championship clubs are keen to sign him, with Forest, Sheffield United and Huddersfield thought to be in the mix.

Longstaff earns £24,000-a-week and whichever club does decide to take him to the Championship is likely to need a hand with such a salary.

nottinghamforest.news/2021/08/18/report-everton-now-want-nottingham-forest-linked-matty-longstaff/

Everton probably wouldn’t though. Rafa Benitez is keen to raid his form club. The younger of the two Longstaff brothers was only coming through the ranks when the Spaniard was in charge at St James’ Park.

It does seem odd that Everton would want the younger Longstaff. Benitez gave his brother Sean his Newcastle debut but given how long it’s been since Matty played that move would seem odd.

Forest chances of getting Longstaff do seem slim

Given that Forest haven’t started the season particularly well and the clutch of clubs interested, the chances of Longstaff rocking up at the City Ground look slim.

Indeed, if Benitez wants him and is willing to take a chance on him it could become a foregone conclusion.

A Championship loan would be ideal for Longstaff. Right now, he needs to play football and Forest could certainly benefit from his presence in the midfield engine room.

James Garner remains a target, although it’s unclear at this stage what Manchester United will do with him.

Longstaff would be a decent alternative. However, Everton’s interest could leave Forest powerless, and it could be a case of back to the drawing board.
