Mansfield Town are delighted to announce the signing of Kieran Wallace from Burton Albion on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old has signed a contract which runs until the end of the current season.

He reunites with Stags’ boss Nigel Clough, under whom he played at Sheffield United and Burton.

After emerging through Nottingham Forest’s academy, Wallace enjoyed a short spell with Ilkeston before he was snapped up by the Blades.

He made 15 appearances for United under Nigel Clough before acquiring more game time on loan with Lincoln City and Fleetwood Town.

A versatile player who can be deployed in numerous positions, Wallace linked up with the manager again at Burton in 2019 following a stint at Matlock .

He recently returned to the club after a loan spell with York.

Manager Nigel Clough said: “Kieran will provide us with good competition and cover in several positions, including midfield, left-back and centre-half.

“We’ve worked with him before and he performed very well for us in League One at Burton.

“He’s fully fit now after injury and will be a good addition to the squad. He’s ready to hit the ground running.”

Kieran Wallace told iFollow Stags, Fri 28 January 2022:

"I'm very pleased to finally be here. A couple of hurdles along the way to overcome, but finally pleased to put pen to paper and be here.
"I came in a couple of weeks ago and had a bit of an issue with a sore knee ... from playing a few games at York.
"The load in my knee was quite high. I had a bit of swelling in my knee which the Mansfield physio wanted to make sure was right, which it is now.
"My season ... I'm coming back from an ACL. I returned to training in September. Returned to playing in November. I went on loan to York at the end of November.
"I was playing in the front of the back four, holding midfield, for York. I played six games there.
"I'm based in Nottingham so it's perfect for me location-wise.
"I've signed a six month contract. My aim is to work hard, try and get in the team, and earn a contract for next season.
"It's been a while since I played league football. I know the manager and he knows me. I want to kick on with my career after a tough year.
Nigel Clough has played Wallace at Sheffield United and Burton at "midfield, left back, centre back, they are the main ones. I'm happy to play anywhere. I think my atrributes suit playing in midfield the best.
"I try and keep it quite simple. Try and work as hard as I can. I'm not the quickest.
"I've not yet played in League Two. I can't imagine it being too different to League One. A little bit more physical.
"I'll be patient and work hard and hopefully my chance will come. That's one thing with the manager, you know that if you're working hard you'll get your chance."

Three days earlier, Nigel Clough told iFollow Stags on Kieran Wallace rumour, 25 Jan 2022:
"Yes it is true. We have worked with Kieran before. He didn't fail the medical, he had a slightly sore knee so it's something we will look at again towards the end of the week. His knee was a bit puffy but it's all settled down now, so we will try to revisit that one.”

KIERAN WALLACE JOINS MANSFIELD TOWN ON PERMANENT DEAL
burtonalbionfc.co.uk, Fri 28 January 2022

KIERAN Wallace has left Burton Albion and joined Sky Bet League Two side Mansfield Town on a permanent deal.

The 27-year-old began his career in Nottingham Forest's Academy, before joining Ilkeston Town and subsequently being spotted by then-Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough, who brought him to Bramall Lane.

After a brief spell at Matlock Town, Wallace joined the Brewers in 2018, initially on a series of short-term deals before signing a permanent contract in the summer of 2019.

Wallace would go on to make 78 appearances in total for the Brewers, scoring twice and proving a versatile option both in midfield and across the back.

Having recovered from an ACL injury late last year, Wallace spent time on loan at National League North side York City before returning to the Pirelli Stadium in January.

This move will reunite Wallace with former Brewers manager Clough as well as former Brewers teammates Lucas Akins, Stephen Quinn, Richard Nartey and John-Joe O'Toole.

Everyone at Burton Albion wishes Kieran all the very best for the future.

Wallace will be remembered for honest endeavour at Burton
Versatile midfielder or defender signs for Clough for the third time in his career as he joins Mansfield

Burton Mail, By Colston Crawford, 28 JAN 2022

It can be safely said that Kieran Wallace leaves Burton Albion without once having let the club down on or off the field.

The most honest of professionals, Wallace is teaming up with manager Nigel Clough for the third time in his career, at Mansfield Town, and Clough will be perfectly well aware of the versatile asset he is getting. At 27, Wallace still has plenty to offer but, realistically, he was not going to be getting many games now in Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s reshaped squad.

The move brings to five the number of former Brewers with the Stags, who signed Lucas Akins last week and have Stephen Quinn and John Joe O’Toole on the books as well as former Burton loanee Richard Nartey on loan from Burnley.

Wallace made 78 appearances for the Brewers across three and a bit years after leaving Matlock Town, where he had rebuilt his career after injury.

He could play in midfield, at centre-half or on either side as a full-back and there were a few times when it seemed his versatility held him back. Players who slip comfortably into several roles can be very useful players to have on the bench. As a result, only 37 of his 60 League appearances for Burton were starts.

He scored twice, heading in after a corner to open the scoring in a 3-0 win away to Scunthorpe United in April 2019, then driving in a deflected shot from 25 yards against Portsmouth in September the same year.

But honest endeavour and a humble approach is what he is really about. Released by Nottingham Forest, he went to Ilkeston, where he became one of several of their young players under Kevin Wilson to be handed a chance in the Football League. He and Che Adams, now in the Premier League with Southampton and a Scotland international, both went to Sheffield United, then managed by Clough.

Wallace was in their first team for a while but had short loan spells with Lincoln City and Fleetwood Town before being released. Once more, he was not too proud to restart in non-league football, with Matlock, until offered a deal by Clough at Burton.

He was unlucky to miss a chunk of games after clashing heads with Liam Boyce in training in the 2019-20 season and since he also had a spell out of the game after getting injured playing cricket, he has not always been the luckiest of players.

He made 17 appearances last season, 15 for Jake Buxton, but appeared to be in Hasselbaink’s plans when he played in the new manager’s first game, against Gillingham. He was playing well away to Charlton Athletic in February when he fell awkwardly and ruptured his cruciate ligament, ending his season and ruling him out of a normal pre-season.

The trouble with the seven-month absence, at least, that such an injury brings is that the team inevitably moves on without you, more so this time, with Hasselbaink working through an almost complete rebuild of the squad.

The club did right by Wallace, giving him a new one-year deal while he was still in rehab. Not all clubs do that and it would have been a particularly difficult time to be out of work. Now he moves on and Brewers fans will wish him the best.

Ex-York City loanee Kieran Wallace looking at Mansfield move
yorkpress.co.uk, 17th January 2022, By Jacob Kilbride @jacob_kilbride

KIERAN WALLACE is looking to join Mansfield Town following the expiration of his loan deal at York City.

The central midfielder joined York on loan from Burton Albion in November and started in six successive matches for City prior to the weekend’s Buildbase FA Trophy win over Slough Town.

Wallace has now returned to his parent club following the end of the short-term deal and is seeking a move to Sky Bet League Two side Mansfield.

“We would have liked to have got Kieran back in but he decided that he wanted to play at the highest level possible,” revealed York first-team coach Kingsley James.

“He was looking at the options available to him and the latest we knew was that he was looking to join Mansfield Town on loan.”

Burton Mail, By Colston Crawford, 7 JAN 2022

Burton Albion midfielder Kieran Wallace looks set to continue his loan spell with York City after recovering from a cruciate ligament injury. Wallace, not included in the official squad list while he was recovering, went to play for York in mid-November. He has made seven appearances, all starts, and the Vanarama National North side have asked about extending the deal beyond January. “We are looking at that, we’re in negotiations with them,” said Hasselbaink.
