Nigel Clough told Craig Priest for Mansfield 103.2, Saturday 29th January 2022, after the Leyton Orient game:

On Harry Charsley: "A very very difficult one. He came to see me a couple of weeks ago. He'd only started 10 league games this season. 10 out of 26. He's one that we didn't really want to let go.
"But he said: 'I'm up in the summer. Have I got a chance of going out on loan?'
"And then this offer came in from Port Vale on a permanent. We deliberated and thought it was a good offer.
"But it was mainly for him. He's such a genuine honest lad. You can say 'no' and keep him around for selfish reasons. But because he's such a genuine lad we had to be fair to him."

Port Vale sign midfielder from League Two rivals
Port Vale have recruited midfielder Harry Charsley as they continue to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window

Port Vale have signed midfielder Harry Charsley from Mansfield Town on a permanent deal.

The Vale had been keen to strengthen that department after Tom Conlon was ruled out for a month with an Achilles injury and Jake Taylor is likely to be out for around six weeks with a recurrence of a thigh injury.

Charsley, aged 25, joined Mansfield from Everton two years ago and has made 76 appearances for the Stags, including 49 league starts.

The midfielder has also played for the Republic of Ireland at under-17, under-19 and under-21 level.

Manager Darrell Clarke said: “He became available and we are delighted. I didn’t want too many under-23 players, with no disrespect. We have a couple of those that are really good lads. I wanted a midfielder that knows the level.

“Harry has done well at Mansfield, has great energy in midfield and I think he will be a welcome addition.

“Certainly when you have the likes of Tom Conlon and Jake Taylor out injured, it gives me a really good attacking number eight who will cover high distances of ground.

“We need that, certainly on our big pitch, and I am delighted he has joined.

“It is another really good option. He is a great lad with a great attitude and a really good pedigree from his Everton days as well.

“So, a really good upbringing. We are looking forward to having him and are delighted to bring him in on a permanent as well. We keep rebuilding.

“We have a really good spirit at this football club and he and all the new players will add to that.

“One of the pleasing things for me is the new players come into a group which is very good. They fit straight in.

“As you speak to the new boys, they will tell you about the spirit in there. They are not just saying it, and I wouldn’t just say it either.

“That is the pleasing aspect, the new lads as well as Harry should all fit in well.”
