Mansfield Town is pleased to announce the signing of experienced defender/midfielder John-Joe O'Toole.

The 33-year-old, who most recently made over 40 League One appearances in a two-year spell with Burton Albion, has signed a contract at One Call Stadium which runs until January 2022.

O'Toole has made over 400 career league appearances for Watford, Sheffield United, Colchester United, Bristol Rovers, Southend United, Northampton Town and Burton.

He earned promotion from League Two with Northampton in 2016, where he was named in the PFA Team of the Year for a second season.

Manager Nigel Clough said: “John-Joe is a player we know well from our time at Burton.

“He is experienced and can play in different positions.

“He is competitive, aggressive at times, and good in the air, which is something we also need.

“With us currently being low on playing personnel through injuries, it’s ideal for both us and him to joins us till January and see how it goes.”

manager Nigel Clough moved to bring in John Joe O’Toole before the game to provide a bit more experience in central defence (or he can also play in midfield). O’Toole had been training with two other League Two clubs and Clough moved to bring him in when he became available. O’Toole was on the bench today, as was Forrester, and Clough is hoping both can play in a midweek U23 game at Wigan.

Nigel Clough told iFollow Stags after the game at Exeter:

“We might give him [O’Toole] a game depending on what night this game at Wigan is [in the Premier League Cup].

“He has played a couple of games and he has been training over the last eight weeks with Walsall and then with Stevenage.

“He’s relatively up to speed, as that’s why he was in the 18 today. We’ll see how he goes this week.”

Nigel Clough told iFollow Stags, Monday 25 October 2021:

“John-Joe O’Toole has a lot of versatility; he has played in midfield but at Burton we fancied him at centre-back. He can read the game well and one of his biggest strengths is in the air. We brought him in to give us some cover at centre half in the next few weeks, but we know he can do a job in other positions as well.

"One thing we are down on is height and heading ability which in League Two is a priority. There are a lot of set plays, a lot of long throws come in to your penalty area. On Saturday we've got the two centre halves and Jordan Bowery ... after that we've got midfielders picking up, normally we'd have McLaughlin and Hewitt, so the back four would all be picking up from set plays, and then you have Jordan as well.

"You don't really want to expose youngsters when we're in the sort of run we are."
