CLOUGH, NATHAN BISHOP AND KENNY JACKETT REACTION

Stags ‘stood up’ to Orient test - manager
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 25th September 2021

Boss Nigel Clough was left ‘delighted’ by a ‘well-deserved clean sheet’ for his side away at high-flying Leyton Orient this afternoon.

Stags’ committed defensive performance in East London meant a first clean sheet of the season for the amber and blue.

The manager says two recent draws gives Mansfield a ‘good foundation’ ahead of an upcoming double-header of home matches in Sky Bet League Two, against Barrow and Oldham respectively.

“In the circumstances, I’m delighted. I thought it was a well-deserved point today and well-deserved clean sheet,” the boss told iFollow Stags after the game.

“Especially in the last ten minutes then the seven added on, we had to be [defensively solid] to keep the clean sheet.

“We had six players missing, lost George Maris then had someone sent off. That’s nearly a full team out. The lads really stood up to it.

“The goalkeeper [Nathan Bishop] made some good saves, in particular an outstanding save late on, and I thought the back-four were excellent today.

“I thought we had the best chance of the first-half when Faz [Rawson] headed the one down from Jordan Bowery in the six-yard box.

“Then second-half I thought we started well, [and were] on the front foot. Then they got on top after that and the sending off means it’s backs-to-the-wall stuff.

“We didn’t make any silly mistakes or give any goals away. I thought Orient had to work for every single chance they created. That was the difference.

“We’ve had four defeats and then now two draws, so a good foundation to move on. Time will tell [whether result gives us confidence], starting with Barrow next Saturday.

“I think when the supporters come away from home and see that sort of battling performance, I think it gives them belief as well. That side’s been missing [from our game], now we have to put them both together.”

Mansfield were reduced to ten men late in the second-half when Tyrese Sinclair reacted to being brought down near the corner flag.

“I think it’s the naivety of some of our players,” Nigel Clough added. “It’s no different to Stephen Quinn, an ex-international, doing it against Harrogate a couple of weeks ago.

“A young player has done it again today. He’s won the free-kick, so it should be an opportunity to get the ball in the box and a booking for their lad.

“All of a sudden, we end up with ten men and hanging on. It’s poor when it happens like that.”

There was an update on midfielder George Maris, who was forced off through injury in the second-half, along with the latest on absentees Ryan Stirk and Kellan Gordon.

“He [Maris] got a bang just on the side of his temple. His eye was closing up and he couldn’t see out of one eye.

“It’s not concussion or anything like that, he just couldn’t see out of his eye.

“Ryan Stirk, not sure, as he’s got ankle ligament damage from a tackle late in the game last week against Rochdale. We’ll have to wait and see how long, but I think it’s a few weeks at least.

“Kellan Gordon opened his knee up in a tackle late on in the same game, so I think he’ll be a couple of weeks.”

Nigel Clough told BBC Radio Nottingham:
"It feels good (to get a clean sheet), but for it to come in the last week of September doesn't feel so good!"
"A few situations where we're not getting shots off, might be a lack of confidence I don't know, but it's driving us mad."
"The sending off was a real game-changer because we brought him on to try and win the game. To do exactly what he did and win free kicks and be a threat with his pace down the right.
"He gets fouled, it should be a booking for the player. In the end, he gets in a tangle, kicks out, similar to Stephen Quinn, and he ends up probably getting a three game ban.
"Very very naive. We don't get anybody else (in the opposition) sent off. The lad's fouled him and grabbed him, but, well, you get on with it. You don't kick out, just like Stephen Quinn. That has to improve.
"When you're already without six players, that's seven now, and you see how young the bench was today, Harry Charsley was the most experienced at 24, so it's going to be a tough few weeks."

Orient draw a ‘good foundations’, says Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough
chad.co.uk, By Duncan Browne, Saturday 25th September 2021

Nigel Clough hailed Mansfield Town's draw at Leyton Orient as a 'good foundation' to build upon.

Following the 1-1 draw with Rochdale, Clough's side have managed to put a run of four straight defeats behind them with two good points.

“We’ve had four defeats and then now two draws, so a good foundation to move on. Time will tell," he told iFollow Stags.

Just wanted to apologise to my team mates and fans for my actions yesterday. I shouldn’t of reacted in the way I did but I’ll learn from it and move forward. Class from the boys for digging deep and getting a well earned point

Goalkeeper credits teammates for 'deserved' clean sheet
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 25th September 2021

Mansfield Town goalkeeper Nathan Bishop hailed the 'desire' of his teammates to keep a first clean sheet of the season away to Leyton Orient.

The on-loan Manchester United man made key saves to deny the second-placed Londoners, including an injury time stop to deny Theo Archibald.

Bishop hopes the Stags can advance from their strongest defensive performance of the season in coming games.

The 21-year-old complimented the efforts of his teammates in the match.

"The boys were fantastic today. I thought defensively they were just excellent," Bishop said.

"[I have] an appreciation of them. I thought they were fantastic all over the pitch today.

"We came with a game plan and we executed it really well.

"I really didn't have that much to do because of it.

"Even the subs that came on put a shift in.

"Burky [Ryan Burke] at left back just winning headers at the end of the game, clearing balls and things like that just means the world.

"They wanted to pride themselves with a clean sheet and they really did deserve it over [the course of] the season."

The loanee made his own impact on the game, denying two Orient chances.

"It's nice to keep the ball out of the net and keep a clean sheet.

"[On making an important late save] Nothing processed in my mind. It was really sharp, really quick and I just went with it.

"[On Archibald's long-range effort] It was wobbling everywhere so to see that go somewhere else apart from the goal and hit my hand was lovely as well.

"I'm just delighted with it [the team's performance] and delighted with a clean sheet."

The youngster hopes Mansfield can gain confidence from the display.

"On a performance basis I think all over the pitch everyone's going to be confident of what they're capable of [now]." Bishop said.

"Their defensive attitude today was fantastic [and] their desire.

"I think if [we can] carry that into next week then there's not much more you can do.

"They were fantastic."

Leyton Orient boss Jackett 'frustrated' with Mansfield Town draw
by Jacob Ranson
https://www.newhamrecorder.co.uk/sport/leyton-orient-v-mansfield-town-match-reaction-8364536

Leyton Orient manager Kenny Jackett ‘frustrated’ his side just lacked that final touch as they played out a goalless draw with Mansfield Town.

The O’s created numerous chances throughout the match but failed to find the final ball or finish but remain second in League Two as everyone in the top three played out 0-0 draws.

But the boss knows Mansfield also had plenty of fire power that they had to be aware of in the match.

“Slightly frustrating at the end for us, I thought the first-half was quite cagey, 50/50. They carry a threat. Danny Johnson coming back to his old club and Rhys Oates who was a really good goalscorer in the National League last year,” Jackett said.

“They’ve got some firepower and for us at half-time, we did feel we needed to up it, and we did as second-half we were very good. Created a high number of chances in an incisive way up until the final third.

“That is something that we’ve been very good at so far this season. Our forwards have the quality to score goals, but unfortunately it wasn’t there day, and we couldn’t get the first goal from a set piece either.”

Orient had four penalty appeals, but none were given, and the boss was more focused on making sure they continue to create those chances.

“I think there was certainly two that went ball to hand, is it or isn’t it. We have to accept the referee’s decision. If you keep creating good situations, then the percentages do work for you.

“Whether they should have been penalties or not is irrelevant now as he didn’t give it. From my point of view we have to keep getting in those situations and things will work out for you.

“We did enough without being able to find that final ball or finish, but we do have the players to do that. Tom James for example, has scored a key goal and got a high amount of assists.

“He got himself into a great position and has been a good provider for us, if we keep doing that we know he will provide for us.

“Unfortunately he couldn’t quite select the right ball at the right time.”
