Mansfield Town earned a first clean sheet of the season with a very solid defensive display in a 0-0 draw at second placed Leyton Orient this afternoon. It was a huge improvement on the some of the dreadful defensive displays in recent weeks such as against Walsall and Harrogate. With the absence of so many defenders through injury, Nigel Clough moved Oli Hawkins back to centre half to partner Farrend Rawson, and with Elliott Hewitt and Stephen McLaughlin at full back, they provided a solid back line, which hopefully will provide a good base to build on in the coming weeks.

The Stags created a chance in the opening 50 seconds as McLaughlin fired wide from 25 yards. Then after 18 minutes, a good opportunity for the Stags as Hewitt’s free kick into the box was headed down by Rawson to Jordan Bowery whose first touch took him away from goal, but he recycled the ball to Hawkins whose cross in was deflected out to Rawson who hit a first time shot from 10 yards which was saved by Orient keeper Lawrence Vigouroux above his head. Orient sent plenty of long throws into the Stags box, and from one of the long throws from Shad Ogie, Harry Smith flicked on to Aaron Drinan who fired on target but McLaughlin got his body in the way to block it over the bar.

A competitive first half, with the Stags playing well and looking good at the back. Orient had two flimsy appeals for penalties, one for a handball by Hewitt when he chested it down, and one a handball by Bowery when the ball was blasted at his arm from about a yard away with his down by his side.

After 49 minutes, a Stags corner was cleared, Orient broke and Drinan got clear of the Stags defence but Nathan Bishop was out to make himself big and Drinan fired well wide. Theo Archibald sent a left footed shot across Bishop and wide after 61 minutes, and then Tom James fired straight at Bishop from 14 yards after 63 minutes.

The home fans were frothing at the mouth at every decision that went against their side, even the most blatant decisions that were rightly in Mansfield’s favour. They screamed for another penalty after 63 minutes as Smith went down in the box, again clearly not a penalty. Archibald’s powerful 30 yard shot was parried away by Bishop after 82 minutes.

The Stags had brought on Tyrese Sinclair to win free kicks and try and get a goal on the break. After 85 minutes, he did what he was brought on to do, and won a free kick a few yards from the corner flag on the right. But in a moment of ill-discipline, having been awarded the free kick, he kicked out at Archibald who had brought him down and landed on him. It was three yards in front of the linesman who had a perfect view, and the referee was left with no choice but to send Sinclair off. He will miss the next three games, as well as leaving his teammate’s a man down here for the final 5 minutes plus what turned out to be 7 minutes of stoppage time. I hope he will learn from his mistake. He’s a hugely talented player.

After 87 minutes, the home fans were screaming for another penalty as James went down in the area. He was correctly booked for diving. After the game, Orient boss Kenny Jackett conceded that probably none of his side’s four appeals for a penalty actually should have been given.

Orient were unlucky on the stroke of 90 minutes, as Smith headed down Ogie’s ball forward into the area, and sub Ruel Sotiriou headed against the outside of the right post.

Into the 7 minutes of stoppage time and an opportunity for the Stags as Lapslie broke forward nicking the ball off Beckles but he just lost control on the edge of the box.

And 5 minutes into stoppage time, Bishop made an absolutely wonderful save to preserve the point as Archibald volleyed goalwards from 12 yards and Bishop got down to push it away. Bishop has shown us this season that he is a very good keeper, and that was probably his best save so far.

That was the last chance for Orient who really pinned the Stags back after Sinclair was sent off.

The Stags deserved the point in my opinion for a good defensive display, with plenty of headers away and putting their bodies on the line, and that wonderful save from Bishop.

Another word for the Stags travelling support, who again provided outstanding vocal backing for their side throughout the game, and helped the players grind out the draw in those 7 long minutes of stoppage time. Superb effort.

The Stags made one change from the side that drew with Rochdale. Kellan Gordon was out with injury, Nigel Clough explaining that he “opened his knee up in a tackle late on in the Rochdale game, and he’ll be out for a couple of weeks.” Danny Johnson came into the starting XI at his former club. Hawkins moved back into central defence, and Hewitt switched to right back. Ryan Stirk was absent from the bench also due to injury, Clough saying “he’s got ankle ligament damage from a tackle late in the Rochdale game” and he thinks he’ll be out for “a few weeks at least.”
In total, the Stags have defenders James Perch (out for the season), Richard Nartey (out for 6-8 weeks), Will Forrester (out until October), and Gordon (out for 2 weeks) out. In addition, midfielders Stirk (out for a few weeks) and Quinn (suspended for 6 games of which he has now missed the first 3 of those), (and now Sinclair who will be suspended for 3 games) are also out.
James Clarke and Keaton Ward came onto the bench.
The Stags lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, with Lapslie on the right and Bowery on the left of midfield, Maris and Ollie Clarke in the centre of midfield, and Oates and Johnson up front.

Speaking of injuries, Maris was forced off here after 54 minutes, but Clough was hopeful he will be fit for next week, saying “he got a bang on the side of his temple. It’s not concussion or anything like that, he just couldn’t see out of his eye as it was closing up.”

While Mansfield had stopped the rot last week with a draw following 4 straight defeats, Orient’s form was in stark contrast, with 3 wins and a draw in their last 4 league games propelling them up to second in the table, and as second top scorers in the league. Orient made one chance from their last game, bringing in Shad Ogie in defence for Dan Happe. Up front they had Harry Smith, very dangerous in the air, who was equal top scorer in the league with 6 goals.

Man of the match: Nathan Bishop/Oli Hawkins

Mansfield Town had Tyrese Sinclair sent off for violent conduct as they fought out a goalless draw with high-flying Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.

Mansfield were awarded won a free-kick with five minutes remaining but Sinclair kicked out at Theo Archibald.

That led to a heated confrontation between players from both sides which ended with a red for Sinclair.

Orient's Shad Ogie and Alex Mitchell and Mansfield's Rhys Oates were handed yellow cards.

Referee Ben Speedie had infuriated the Stags by turning down two penalty claims for hand ball in the first-half.

It was Orient's turn to complain when substitute Ruel Sotiriou was felled in the box but failed to win the verdict.

In a game of few clear cut chances, in which they kept their first clean sheet of the season, Mansfield came closest to breaking the deadlock when Sotiriou grazed the post with a header.

Then Stags keeper Nathan Bishop saved his side a point with a fine save in added time when he parried away a stinging shot from Archibald.

Ten-man Mansfield Town make a point at Leyton Orient

Ten-man Mansfield held on for a battling goalless draw at Leyton Orient.

The Stags secured a second successive draw with a credible result at the in-form O’s.

And most importantly they kept a clean sheet against a side who had scored an impressive 11 goals in their previous four league games.

Manager Nigel Clough named a solitary change after his side ended a worrying five-game losing streak with a draw against Rochdale last weekend.

Kellan Gordon was the man to make way as Danny Johnson made his first league start since August.

Both sides took their time to create a meaningful chance in the capital.

And it was the lowly Stags who had the first real opportunity to break the deadlock when Farrend Rawson forced a save from former Swindon stopper Lawrence Vigouroux.

Down the other end in-form Harry Smith, who has already scored six league goals this term, headed wide of the mark as high-flying Orient started to motor.

Clough’s resolute Stags had to do a lot of defending to keep the game goalless at the break.

And they did well to frustrate the hosts’ potent front three as they put their bodies on the line to keep them out.

After the break Aaron Drinan, who has four goals himself this term, fired wide after a quick counter attack.

Tom James fired a poor free-kick well over the bar as Orient looked the most likely to open the scoring.

Ollie Clarke went close on the hour mark as his clever dummy allowed him to beat two Orient defenders and force Vigouroux to make a save.

The Stags were let off when James fired straight at Nathan Bishop from Drinan’s cut back.

Clough’s charges continued to defend for their lives as they desperately tried to hold on for a point.

Their lives were made harder when substitute Tyreece Sinclair was sent off with five minutes to go.

And they were indebted to the woodwork when Ruel Sotiriou headed against the post in stoppage time.

Bishop made a superb late save to keep out Theo Archibald’s volley.

REPORT: LEYTON ORIENT 0-0 MANSFIELD TOWN
LEYTON ORIENT COULDN’T FIND A WAY PAST MANSFIELD TOWN DESPITE A DOMINANT SECOND HALF AT THE BREYER GROUP STADIUM.

Kenny Jackett made one change to his starting XI that beat Bristol Rovers 3-1 at the Memorial Stadium last week with Shad Ogie coming in for Dan Happe. Jackett also brought Antony Papadopoulos onto the bench to replace Jayden Sweeney.

Orient dominated the first half but couldn’t find a goal to get themselves ahead at the break. The O’s first big chance came when Theo Archibald’s corner was cleverly flicked on by Harry Smith into a dangerous position, but neither Darren Pratley nor Omar Beckles could get a good foot on the ball and get a decent attempt on target.

Five minutes later Orient were on the attack again as Craig Clay struck the ball with the outside of his foot from the edge of the box. His effort didn’t have enough power to test Nathan Bishop in the Mansfield goal which he calmly collected.

Mansfield then had a chance to go ahead as Elliott Hewitt’s free-kick found its way into the O’s penalty area before Jordan Bowery struck at goal from close range which Lawrence Vigouroux excellently saved and then collected the follow up to keep the score level.

Leading marksman Harry Smith found himself on the end of Tom James’ cross just after the twenty minute mark but his header goes the wrong side of the post as The O’s continued to look for the opening goal of the match.

After the ball bounced up to him, Mansfield defender Hewitt looked to have handled the ball in the penalty area for Mansfield and despite the appeals from players and around the ground the ref waved play on.

The O’s almost snatched a goal just before the break as Shad Ogie’s throw-in was flicked on by Smith into a dangerous area where Aaron Drinan was waiting to volley the ball at goal, only for it to be deflected over the bar.

HALF TIME: LEYTON ORIENT 0-0 MANSFIELD TOWN

Orient started the second half how they finished the first, pressing Mansfield. Clay made an incredible through ball to Drinan who found himself one-on-one with Bishop, once he made his way into the box he opted for power, and blazed the ball wide of goal.

The visitors had their first effort of the second half on the hour mark when Ollie Clarke curled his shot from the edge of the box into the arms of Vigouroux.

That led to an incisive O’s counter-attack. Drinan found Archibald in space on the right wing with a great pass, but once Archibald made his way into the box, he dragged his shot wide of goal.

Orient then put together another fantastic move which saw Drinan play a beautiful ball into the box which found Tom James on his own 12-yards from goal, but his first time effort went straight at Bishop.

Substitute Ruel Sotiriou was involved again in Orient’s next attack, as he played a brilliant ball across the face of goal - which should have found the net as Smith and Archibald both missed the ball by a fraction. Archibald then stung the hands of Bishop with a fierce strike from 30-yards, as time was beginning to run out for Orient.

Things started to boil over as both players gathered by the corner flag after Tyrese Sinclair kicked out at Archibald. After consultation with his Assistant, referee Ben Speedie dismissed Sinclair, giving Orient a small boost with the clock winding down.

There was seven minutes of stoppage time and Orient thought they found the winner on two occasions.

The first saw striker Harry Smith head the ball down to Ruel Sotiriou, who then headed the ball towards goal which glanced the post.

With one final roll of the dice, it looked as if Theo Archibald may have won it. Archibald lashed a powerful left-footed volley towards goal, which was denied by the fingertips of Bishop.

That ended a frustrating afternoon for the O’s. Orient remain second in League Two and four points from top with a trip to Port Vale next week.

Leyton Orient played out a goalless draw with Mansfield Town at the Breyer Group Stadium.

Manager Kenny Jackett made one change as Shadrach Ogie replaced Dan Happe who dropped to the bench.

It was an even start with the first real chance coming in the 10th minute when Theo Archibald's low fizzed corner was backheeled by Harry Smith, but neither Darren Pratley or Omar Beckles could quite get a shot away.

Five minutes later right wing-back Tom James delivered an exquisite outside of the foot through ball to set Drinan off.

Mansfield recovered well though, before Craig Clay's strike was collected by Nathan Bishop.

Striker Harry Smith rose above a sea of yellow and blue to meet James' cross, but headed just wide of the target in the 22nd minute.

The O’s had a penalty appeal shortly after but it was waved away much to the disbelief of the hosts.

Left wing-back Connor Wood then popped up at the back post, but failed to keep his attempt on target.

Orient started the second half how they finished the first, pressing Mansfield. Clay made an incredible through ball to Drinan who found himself one-on-one with Bishop, once he made his way into the box he opted for power, and blazed the ball wide of goal.
