CLOUGH AND JOHN YEMS REACTION

Manager reflects on late defeat
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 13th March 2021

Boss Nigel Clough aired his frustration after his side were beaten by a late Crawley goal away at the People’s Pension Stadium on Saturday.

An even contest in West Sussex was decided by a stoppage time winner from James Tilley, which was powerfully fired past Marek Stech with just seconds left to play.

The manager says his side gave away an ‘incredibly soft goal’ to lose the game.

“To get to 91-and-a-half minutes and to concede from a routine throw-in on the far side, it’s gone between Kellan Gordon and Farrend Rawson, and Marek Stech should’ve saved it at his near post,” he told iFollow Stags

“It just probably sums up where we are at the moment. We had a brilliant victory against the league leaders [Cheltenham] on Tuesday and then we go and give the game [today] away in the final 30 seconds.

“We should’ve been ahead in the game. They had one chance, which Marek saved. Apart from that, we had good situations and good chances which we didn’t take.

“The important thing is, when you don’t take your chances, don’t lose the game. We gave an incredibly soft goal away late on.

“I thought we did alright in patches. I thought the first-half was a bit lacklustre from both teams.

“We came out in the second-half and started well. We looked as though we might get a goal, but then it looks like it’s just going to be a 0-0, which isn’t a bad result for us.

“I thought the Jamie Reid header in the first-half [was Mansfield’s best chance]. You’d expect him to score that, I think.

“Strikers miss chances. It’s the hardest thing to do [score]. But what you don’t do is throw away the game.”

Nigel Clough says the Stags cannot ‘make progress’ if they continue to lose games in similar fashion.

“It’s frustration, but it’s just sad that this keeps happening,” he added. “I’ve just told the lads what we’re talking about.

“Until we can get to the stage where we can defend as a team and come away from home and get a 0-0, we can’t make progress.”

The boss also spoke of captain Ollie Clarke, who was replaced by Keaton Ward at the interval.

“Ollie [Clarke] was just shattered with the knocks and niggles that he’s had. We were going to make changes, and if we might’ve had a few better options, we would’ve done.

“But with the team playing so well on Tuesday night, you want to go with the same one. You can’t really win in that situation as there are a few that do need a rest.

“Ollie is not anywhere near his usual self at the moment, so he needs a breather.”

Nigel Clough told BBC Radio Nottingham:
"We failed to defend a run-of-the-mill throw-in. They got between Kellan Gordan and Rawson and then it's beaten Marek at his near post. I think all three of them are culpable really."

Nigel Clough, asked by Mark Stevenson if these errors can be fixed, told iFollow Stags:
"With the current set of players ... I'm not sure. Not sure about that. There will be a lot of assessing done in the last couple of months of the season. But it's evident that we need fresh players in to make that difference."

'Incredibly soft goal' frustrates Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough in Crawley defeat
chad.co.uk, By Duncan Browne, Saturday 13th March 2021

Nigel Clough was left rueing an 'incredibly soft goal' as Mansfield Town were beaten by a stoppage-time strike at Crawley.

Sub James Tilley slotted home the only gooa of the game in the dying seconds.

“The important thing is, when you don’t take your chances, don’t lose the game. We gave an incredibly soft goal away late on," Clough told iFollow Stags.

“I thought we did alright in patches. I thought the first-half was a bit lacklustre from both teams.

“We came out in the second-half and started well. We looked as though we might get a goal, but then it looks like it’s just going to be a 0-0, which isn’t a bad result for us."

However, that wasn't the case as the Red Devils netted at the death.

“To get to 91-and-a-half minutes and to concede from a routine throw-in on the far side, it’s gone between Kellan Gordon and Farrend Rawson, and Marek Stech should’ve saved it at his near post,” Clough added.

“It just probably sums up where we are at the moment. We had a brilliant victory against the league leaders (Cheltenham) on Tuesday and then we go and give the game away in the final 30 seconds.

“We should’ve been ahead in the game. They had one chance, which Marek saved. Apart from that, we had good situations and good chances which we didn’t take."

Clough though Jamie Reid's first-half header was Mansfield's brightest chance.

“You’d expect him to score that, I think," Clough continued.

“Strikers miss chances. It’s the hardest thing to do (score). But what you don’t do is throw away the game.”

'He’s always had that bit about him' - Crawley Town boss John Yems praises the impact of match-winner James Tilley
By Jack Butler, Saturday 13th March 2021

John Yems was happy as Crawley battled to victory over Mansfield Town. It wasn’t a match for the ages, but a fourth consecutive home win is pushing Crawley in the right direction.

The match looked to be heading for a goalless draw, before Jane’s Tilley broke free in the box and fired past the Mansfield keeper to snatch all three points in the added-time.

“That’s the sort of player he is,” said Yems. “You know he’s got that. He’s always had that bit about him.”

It was another resolute defensive display against a Mansfield side, who put three past Cheltenham last time out.

“You start with a point,” explained Yems. “You keep in the game, then in the last minute you’ve got a chance.

“The subs now...people are making the difference when they come on rather than making up the numbers.

“When you’ve got players coming on...that want to prove a point and have a bit of quality you can rely on that quality winning you the game.

“That’s what we’ve done. I’m really pleased for James [Tilley].”

The win moves Crawley into tenth place just six points off the play-off places - with two games in hand.

However, the game was mostly flat from two sides who looked tired from the demands of an intense fixture list that continues to the end of the season.

“It weren’t the prettiest of games, but they’re a good side,” stated Yems. “They don’t make it easy for you.

“You hope the players you bring on are fresh, but you’re in the lap of the Gods. There’s not much you can do. I hope the games don’t turn a bit farcical.

“Let’s just hope we can keep on going. We’ve got a few players coming back from injury now,“ added Yems.

Crawley Town boss John Yems reflects on 'magic' moment that sunk Mansfield Town in stoppage time
chad.co.uk, By Duncan Browne, Saturday 13th March 2021

Crawley Town boss John Yems believed it would take just one moment to settle today's clash with Mansfield Town - and his side delivered in the final seconds.

Substitute James Tilley scored the only goal of the game in stoppage time as a point for both sides seemed the likely outcome.

"It was a tough game. They're a good side, very organised," Yems told the Red Devils' YouTube channel.

"I think both sides, you could tell, fixtures are catching up with a few teams now.

"At the end of the the day, I thought it was going to take a bit of magic or an unlucky goal to settle it and we got it."

Yems also praised his side for keeping a clean sheet against the side who beat previous League Two leaders Cheltenham Town 3-1 in midweek.

He added: "I keep saying it. If you start with a point and finish with one then in the last minute you've got a chance.

"We've got people coming on with a point to prove and a bit of quality, that's what happened."

John Yems praises former James Tiley after his late winner for Crawley
By Adam Stenning @StenningAdam

Crawley head coach John Yems was full of praise for former Albion youngster James Tiley after he produced a piece of magic to give them a 1-0 win over Mansfield at The People’s Pension Stadium.

The 23-year-old scored a volley in stoppage time to help the Reds make it three consecutive wins and clean sheets in League Two.

But Yems admits he had not realised that Tiley had scored.

He said: “At first I thought it had gone wide, then I saw everyone jumping down and thought he must have scored.

“I am really pleased for James with him being local as well. I thought Jordan Maguire-Drew put a shift in, as did Jake Hesketh and these are players that have not played for a while.

“But every game you have to be careful as I said last week about managing that because the players want to stay on and play all the time, but you have to be careful with the amount of games we have got coming up, we have to make sure we balance it up and make sure we share the workload around the squad.”

Mansfield went close to taking the lead early on after Jamie Reid came close with an overhead kick, which forced Glenn Morris into a good save.

Tom Nichols went close to putting Crawley ahead as he struck the bar following a corner. Jack Powell’s floated delivery found the striker on the penalty spot, the striker’s effort looped onto the crossbar as Marek Stech was quick to claim the loose ball.

Nicols went close again in the 57th minute, after former Albion players, Jordan Maguire-Drew and Archie Davies linked up brilliantly on the right wing and Davies then drilled a low cross in towards Nichols, but his effort was palmed away by Stech.

Just as the game looked as though it was heading for a goalless draw, Tilley produces some magic to give the Reds all three points. The substitute shrugged off his man on the wing before firing a venomous half volley past Stech.

Yems praised the impact the substitutes made for his side.

He said: That’s the good thing now with the subs, where they are getting fit after the Covid, which meant we couldn’t train and that. But now we have had a couple of friendlies and people are making the difference when they come on as opposed to making the numbers up.

“I think Josh Wright did well when he came on and put a shift in. That is something we can look forward to in the future him and Jack Powell, you have got people that want to play.”

The victory sees Crawley move up to tenth place in the table and they are six points off the play-off places, with two games in hand over some of the sides above them.
