CLOUGH AND DEREK ADAMS REACTION

Boss left delighted by win and clean sheet
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 27th February 2021

Nigel Clough says today’s hard-earned 1-0 victory over Morecambe feels like ‘the best three points of the season’ so far.

Jordan Bowery’s first-half goal was well-protected in the second period to ensure the Stags would return to winning ways at a sunny One Call Stadium.

The boss, speaking to iFollow Stags post-match, was left delighted by his side’s clean sheet and win.

“I probably think it’s the best three points of the season. The clean sheet, the standard of the opposition and the way we had to achieve it,” said Nigel Clough.

“We started the game brilliantly and Reidy [Jamie Reid] could’ve scored with a rebound.

“Second-half I thought we scrapped and battled and defended as if our lives depended on it. There were no mistakes and we made Morecambe work for every scrap of a chance they had today.

“We’re delighted with the clean sheet and the three points. We played like a different team [compared to Tuesday night].

“I hope that their pride has been hurt - because it’s hurt our pride as staff - that we’ve conceded too many goals in the last week or so.

“To concede six here in the last two home games isn’t too clever. So we needed a clean sheet more than anything today.

“We’re delighted with the back-four. I thought Mal Benning did well coming back into the team.

“Ollie Clarke, George Maris and Stephen Quinn battled well in midfield. Everybody did their jobs and that was the reason for no subs, where do you put somebody on?

“Yes, they’re all a little bit tired, but you don’t want to disrupt anything.”

The manager says this afternoon’s victory will provide a ‘big boost’ to the confidence of the Mansfield squad.

“We dealt with everything brilliantly today. There are going to be League Two games like that, and we’re learning how to better deal with them.

“When you haven’t won for five, and have lost the last three, so to get the three points is a big boost for everybody.

“That’s six out of the last 11 we’ve won now, with two draws. Over the course of the last two months, it’s been a very good run.

“When you wake up on a Sunday and get that nice feeling after three points and a clean sheet, I think supporters get that same feeling as well.”

There was also a word on forward Oli Sarkic, who was absent from today’s squad.

“He [Sarkic] felt his thigh during the warm-up at Harrogate on Tuesday and he couldn’t have come on during that game.

“It’s just a slight niggle again, so we’re hoping that Tuesday, if not next Saturday, he’ll be available.”

"Probably the best three points of the season!" Mansfield Town's victory over Morecambe impresses Nigel Clough
chad.co.uk, By Duncan Browne, Saturday 27th February 2021

Nigel Clough hailed Mansfield Town's victory over Morecambe as the 'best three points of the season'.

Jordan Bowery's first-half volley settled the contest, although Clough was just as impressed with the defence that stifled the fifth-placed Shrimps.

"I probably think it's the best three points of the season - the clean sheet, the standard of the opposition and the way we had to achieve it," reflected Clough as his side moved up to 16th in the League two table, ending a run of three straight defeats.

"First half, I thought we played well. It could have been more and we started the game, the first 15 minutes, brilliant.

"Second half I thought we scrapped and battled and defended as if our lives depended on it. And no mistakes, that's the biggest thing, we made Morecambe scrap for everything today.

"Stoney's (keeper Aidan Stone) not ahd a shot. Every little thing at all they had to work extremely hard for."

Clough demandsed better from his side following home defeats to Bolton (3-2) and Cambridge (3-0), plus Tuesday's 1-0 reverse at Harrogate.

"We had a chat with the players and said we had to put that behind us quickly," he added.

"I thought we did that from the first whistle today and played as a different team.

"I hope the pride's been a hurt a little bit. It's hurt our pride, management and coaching staff, that we've conceded too may goals in the last two weeks or so."Too concede six here in the last two home games isn't too clever. We needed a clean sheet more than anything."

Morecambe manager Derek Adams told the Morecambe website:
"I thought it was an extremely poor game. There was no quality in the 90 minutes from both sides. Especially us, we didn't start the game very well.
"Mansfield started the game better than us. They won second balls, they got forward, they created a lot of corners, without creating any real opportunities.
"The only opportunity they had on target was the one they scored. And really the only opportunity that we had in the game was at the end when AJ tries to flick it in.
"Overall I didn't think it was a good afternoon. A lot of decision-making wasn't good enough on the day. And I think that has caused us the problem this afternoon.
"The pitch is in extremely poor condition. That didn't allow any of the two teams to play football. There was very few opportunities on goal throughout the afternoon and that includes us.
"I thought that Mansfield did start the game a lot better than us. And they had probably the better of the first half. We had the better of the second half without finding that turn of the key to get the ball into the back of the net."
