Nigel Clough delighted with how fast Mansfield Town have turned things around
chad.co.uk, By Stephen Thirkill, Monday 25th January 2021

Nigel Clough admits he has been surprised by how fast things have turned around at Mansfield.

Stags are statistically the best team in League Two since Clough took over and made it five EFL wins in a row on Saturday for the first time since 1991.

“It has surprised us how fast it happened considering we took over a team yet to win,” he said.

“The work-rate pleased us from the start and we knew there were some very good players in the team.

“We just had to turn draws into wins and the confidence goes from there.

“We have been surprised, but delighted at the same time. The players have worked incredibly hard.

“They are at the stage now where they are looking forward to every game that comes.”

But Clough remains keen to play down talk of a play-off push and insists Stags will just focus on racking up the points and seeing where it takes them.

“We will certainly have a go and see where it takes us,” he added. “I don’t know if it is a realistic target but we will do what we can to get as many points as we can and see where it takes us.

“I don’t think it is a time to be making predictions, let’s just keep trying to win games and see where we go.”

Clough remains keen to bolster his squad in the final days of the transfer window with negotiations currently going on behind the scenes.

“We are working on things, inevitably it happens in the last week.

“We are delighted with the business we have one done so far, but we have still work to do this week.”

Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough vows not to get carried away by winning run
chad.co.uk, By Stephen Thirkill, Monday 25th January 2021

Nigel Clough is vowing Mansfield Town will not get carried away by the surge up the table.

Stags are on a five game winning run and are now just five points off the play-off after spending most of the season looking over their shoulders.

But Clough insists it is important for his players to remember what has got them to the place they are now in.

“Confidence is a wonderful thing to have in football and we have got it at the moment,” he said.

“We are not going to get carried away and we will remind the players each day of what it took to win those five games and the work-rate involved, the second that drops then we won't be the same team.

“The hard work, defensive or attacking wise, we need that in order to stand a chance.”

And Clough is also keen that his players keep their focus and keep doing what they do well.

“The league is so tight but there is still a lot of work to do yet,” he adde. “There is no outstanding team in the division and it will stay tight for the rest of the season.

“We are capable of beating anybody in the league and I hope people are starting to take note.

The play-offs being mentioned doesn’t bother us or change things.

“Maybe if we get there with five or six games to go and we are in with a shout then that might be the case.

“Let’s see where we are at the end of February or the start of March and take it from there.

“Let’s just keep trying to win games and not hamper ourselves with any talk of whether we can do this or that, let’s just keep winning games.”

Nigel Clough says Bolton Wanderers' fall from grace is warning to all
chad.co.uk, By Stephen Thirkill, Monday 25th January 2021

Stags boss Nigel Clough believes the fall from grace of Bolton Wanderers should act as a warning.

Cash-strapped Wanderers find themselves 17th in the League Two table just nine seasons after plying their trade in the Premier League.

Bolton’s slip down the Football League was brought about by huge debts which saw them owe a whopping £172.9m in December 2015.

And Clough believes it should act as a warning shot to any club living beyond their means.

“It is startling really and a warning to an awful lot of clubs who carry debt,” he said.

“It was only the generosity of their previous owner who kept them going.

“When that owner is not there the reality kicks in and you cannot keep going at the same level.

“There needs to be a levelling off period, which there is now, and they need to start climbing back up again.

“They look as though they are capable of doing that now but it's a big drop from where they were before.”

Clough expects a tough test from what he describes as a quality side when Bolton travel to the One Call Stadium on Tuesday night.

“They are a very good footballing side,” he said. “They have got quality, that is the thing.

“They have also got a proven goalscorer at this level and the league above.”
