Coach delighted as Stags match 30-year record
mansfieldtown.net, Saturday 23rd January 2021

First team coach Andy Garner says the management team are ‘very proud’ to match a 30-year record for the Stags - five successive Football League victories for the first time since 1991.

Frontman Jamie Reid applied the finishing touch for the amber and blue away at Southend United this afternoon to make it five wins from five in Sky Bet League Two.

Garner says that today’s victory at Roots Hall was a ‘fully deserved’ one.

“We’re delighted with the three points and the five wins on the trot. I think it was a fully deserved victory to be honest,” he told iFollow Stags.

“I think we played really well in the second-half and limited them to very little. It was just nice to get that goal.

“We’re very proud [of five wins in a row]. We keep saying to them, there’s no better feeling than winning football matches.

“We’ve got another one [win] today, and it’s a long trip home that will be a fantastic trip home.

“It’s a great feeling for us, and the lads have deserved that, because they have been working incredibly hard and incredibly well.”

The coach also touched on today’s strike-pairing of Jordan Bowery and Reid (below), who both had big parts to play in the winning goal.

“It was unbelievable [work from Jordan Bowery for the goal],” he added.

“The thing is with Jordan, he has that fantastic bit of pace about him. It was so pleasing, as we’ve been speaking about it for a while on him coming inside, and the most important thing is that he’s hit the target.

“You see so many people coming inside and blazing the ball over the bar, but it was fantastic - he hits the target, their ‘keeper makes a save and we’ve got Reidy following in. We’re delighted with it.

“He [Bowery] is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and he was really down when we came. But he’s a nice guy to work with, and it’s little things like that today that makes me happy.

“What benefits Reidy is us telling him ‘your goals will come because of all the work you put in.’ He has ran miles and miles, doing everything he possibly can.

“And you get your rewards. We’ve told him that it doesn’t matter about goals, you just keep playing the way you are doing, and the goals will come.”

On-loan Burton midfielder Stephen Quinn (below) made his Stags’ debut this afternoon, someone Garner describes as a ‘fantastic’ player.

“We know Quinny inside out - he’s fantastic. He gives us that bit of experience and that bit of bite and steel.

“It [substitution] was down to after the 70th minute, he was shattered, so just a bit of tiredness.

“He is a good player and that’s why we’ve brought him to the club.”

Andy Garner feels Mansfield Town 'fully deserved' win against Southend United
Southend Echo, By Chris Phillips, Saturday 23rd January 2021

MANSFIELD Town’s first team coach Andy Garner felt the Stags fully deserved their 1-0 win at Southend United.

The victory, which came after Jamie Reid netted the only goal of the game, was Mansfield’s fifth League victory in succession.

And Garner believed it was a fair result.

“It was a fully deserved victory,” said Garner.

https://www.echo-news.co.uk/sport/19035113.andy-garner-feels-mansfield-town-fully-deserved-win-southend-united/

“We played well in the first half but we wanted a bit more in the second half because we knew there was more there.

“We got the goal and to keep a clean sheet is fantastic as well.

“We limited them to very little and it was good for Reidy to score”

Reid’s goal was his fourth of the season and Garner feels the forward is now being rewarded for his hard work.

“We’ve always told him goals will come because of all the hard work he’s put in,” said Garner.

“He has run miles and miles. He’s holding the ball up and doing everything.

“You get your rewards for that and we told him not to worry about the goals and to keep on playing the way he has been.

“But he’s getting the rewards for his hard work now.”

Andy Garner told iFollow Stags:
"The manager (Nigel Clough) is absolutely delighted.
"The only down side is we have ordered pizzas on the bus. It's Stephen McLaughlin's fault...
"Stephen McLaughlin only lives two minutes away and he said there's a nice fish and chip shop around the corner, it's absolutely beautiful.
"And the gaffer has gone ballistic because he'd rather have fish and chips than rubbish pizzas.
"So Stephen McLaughlin has let us down massively."

Southend United boss Mark Molesley frustrated after wasting 'big opportunity' against Mansfield Town
Southend Echo, By Chris Phillips, Saturday 23rd January 2021

SOUTHEND United manager Mark Molesley was a frustrated figure after seeing his side waste a 'big opportunity' against Mansfield Town at Roots Hall.

Blues could have moved out of the relegation zone with a win and off the bottom with a draw.

But the Shrimpers slumped to a 1-0 defeat, much to the annoyance of Molesley.

"It was a tough battle and we’re really disappointed because it’s a big opportunity missed for us to climb out," said Molesley.

"We momentarily switched off for their goal too.

"We had a lapse of concentration and we’ve been punished for it.

"It’s bitterly disappointing but it’s only ourselves who can get ourselves out of this and we can’t behind excuses."

And Molesley is also keen for Blues to improve going forward.

"We need to show more guile in the attacking third," said Molesley.

"We haven’t given up too many clear cut chances but we haven’t created too many ourselves although we had a great one at the end with Sim’s (Akinola) header and a penalty shout too.

Southend United boss rues 'misses opportunity' after defeat to Mansfield Town

Jamie Reid hit the only goal of the game as Mansfield made it five EFL win on the spin for the first time since 1991.

But the Southend gaffer was left to rue missed second half chances by Timothee Dieng and Simeon Akinola.

A point would have lifted United off the bottom of the League Two table.

“It was a tough battle. I’m really disappointed as it was a big opportunity missed for us,” he said.

“There wasn’t much in the game and it was another tough battle. I think at this stage of the season, with the current weather, the games are always quite tough, battling affairs.

"They’re not the most technical affairs, but again we’ve momentarily switched off, had a lapse in concentration and been punished for it.

“That’s really disappointing because we haven’t given up too many clear cut chances, albeit we haven’t created too many ourselves.

"At the same time, we’ve had a great one for Sim [Akinola] at the back post with that header and a penalty shout, but we can’t hide behind the fact that we’ve lost that game.

"We need to show more guile in the attacking third, and again a momentary lapse in concentration has cost us dearly.

“They took their [chance] and we didn’t take ours - small details, big impact. That’s where we find ourselves at the moment. It’s bitterly disappointing but only ourselves can get ourselves out of it and we can’t hide behind excuses."

Southend United boss Mark Molesley reacts to Timothee Dieng's red card against Mansfield Town
Southend Echo, By Chris Phillips, Saturday 23rd January 2021

SOUTHEND United manager Mark Molesley felt Timothee Dieng was not going to be sent off until Mansfield Town’s players surrounded referee Ben Speedie.

Dieng was shown a second yellow card six minutes time from time after being adjudged to have trodden on a grounded Mansfield player.

But Molesley is keen to see the incident again before deciding whether or not it was the correct decision.

“I’d have to see it properly again but it looked like the referee had no problem with it until their players surrounded him,” said Molesley.

https://www.echo-news.co.uk/sport/19034469.southend-united-boss-mark-molesley-reacts-timothee-diengs-red-card-mansfield-town/

“There was a heap on the floor as Tim’s walked past.

“Has he stood on him? It wasn’t a stamp or anything like that.

“But if he has stepped on him then it’s a lack of discipline which we can ill afford at the moment.”

Dieng, who had previously never been sent off in English football, will now miss out on facing his former Bradford City side on Tuesday night as he serves a one match suspension.

Southend United suffer three injury setbacks during defeat to Mansfield Town
Southend Echo, By Chris Phillips, Saturday 23rd January 2021

SOUTHEND United suffered three injury setbacks during Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Mansfield Town.

Right-back Elvis Bwomono was taken off with a back problem at half-time before midfielder Alan McCormack and the versatile Greg Halford also had to be substituted.

And Blues boss Mark Molesley will nervously be waiting to see how the injuries settle down.

"Elvis did well to start the game to be honest but his back locked up and he had to come off," said Molesley.

https://www.echo-news.co.uk/sport/19034499.southend-united-suffer-three-injury-setbacks-defeat-mansfield-town/

"Macca came off with a calf issue we will have to monitor and Greg has felt his shoulder.

"That will need checking and we will have a few in the medical room now."

Blues will also be without Timothee Dieng against Bradford City on Tuesday night after the Frenchman serves a one match suspension following his red card against Mansfield Town this afternoon.
