Defender joins Grimsby on loan
mansfieldtown.net, Mon 18 Jan 2021 Defender Rollin Menayese has joined Grimsby Town on loan until the end of the season. The 23-year-old, who signed from Bristol Rovers last July, has found first team opportunities limited recently. James Perch is there as back-up and it’s an area we have plenty of cover in. “It’s a good opportunity for Rollin to go and play some football,” he added. He was a bit unlucky, as he did very well at Cambridge when he came in. “But we’ve been very pleased with the pairing of Faz [Rawson] and Ryan Sweeney, and James Perch when he stepped in as well. “He [Menayese] has gone down the pecking order a little bit, so he asked if he could go out and get some games. The 6'3" central defender becomes Paul Hurst's second signing of the winter transfer window. https://www.grimsby-townfc.co.uk/news/2021/january/menayese-signs-on-loan/ 23-year-old Menayese began his career at Cardiff City progressing through the Academy system before signing for Weston-super-Mare. The young defender went on to impress and secure a move to Sky Bet League One side Bristol Rovers, joining the ranks of their Under 23 squad. In January 2018, Menayese joined Swindon Town on loan for the second half of the season where he went onto make a total of 14 appearances, helping to secure a 9th place finish in Sky Bet League Two. The defender then enjoyed another loan spell, this time at National League side Aldershot Town after signing in February 2019 for the remainder of the season. Following 16 appearances for the National League side, Menayese returned to his parent club and enjoyed more first-team opportunities during his final season, making 23 appearances throughout the curtailed season. After penning a contract extension at Rovers in the summer of 2020, Mansfield Town secured the signature of Menayese, where he has gone onto make 14 appearances in all competitions scoring twice. The defender spoke to gtfc.co.uk following his first training session with his new teammates. "It was a tough session this morning but I really enjoyed it", said Menayese. "The gaffer was great with me, the session took its toll and for the lads who didn't play at the weekend, there was a bit more running and a lot of sharp and small passing drills so it was good. "I found out a couple of weeks or a week ago, when I spoke to the manager, spoke to my agent and I was very interested and keen to join. I think it's the right time for me because I really want to push myself, I want to keep on improving and hopefully we can get some wins. I have spoken to a few players about Paul Hurst, some of the boys at my club have worked with him and I spoke to Benno [Kyle Bennett] as well and he had good positive words to say so I was very excited to come here". We also caught up with his new manager who is pleased to reinforce his defensive options. "He's a player that I have been aware of for some time", said Hurst. "At the start of this season, I had said that I had been watching games and he is someone that caught the eye while he has been at Mansfield. "He has found himself out of the team there and available, so we have brought him here to add competition, I said the other day on Saturday that we were sort of worrying about Mattie Pollock prior to the game and the obvious person to move would have been Elliott Hewitt, but we needed him in midfield as we only had two, so we need competition. "He's probably a little different to Mattie and Luke at the back. He's quick and athletic and hopefully he brings that competition and he's keen to get involved. He's very much a centre half, that's his best position. He broke through at Bristol Rovers and his manager there took him to Mansfield and obviously a change of manager has meant he hasn't been able to force himself into the team there, but that's to our benefit". "One of his biggest assets is his mobility and how he moves. Just in training this morning, you can see he wants to get tight to people, he's aggressive in his defending and I think we need that, as I said we have got 20 odd games to go and we want players who are committed, he is up for the challenge and I really like that about him. Once the interest was there, he was just saying he wants to be involved and that is the attitude you want from people".
