STAGS THROUGH AT CARLISLE WITH DANNY ROSE STUNNER

Martin Shaw at Brunton Park

Mansfield Town are through to the third round of the Checkatrade Trophy after a 3-2 win at Carlisle United. The win came courtesy of a stunning 25 yard strike from Danny Rose into the top right corner on 86 minutes, a goal worthy of winning any game. It was his third late goal in consecutive games from the substitutes bench. The Stags had started the game sloppily at the back with Carlisle having three chances in the opening 8 minutes. But Mansfield then took a firm grip on the game, taking the lead on 14 minutes as Krystian Pearce looped a header over the keeper from a Chris Clements’ dinked free kick into the area. It was Pearce’s first goal of the season. The Stags scored a second goal on 30 minutes. Chris Clements played a terrific ball out to full back Lee Collins in the area on the right, Collins slid a fine pass into the middle for Matt Green who bundled home from 2 yards, for his 9th goal of the season. Collins had a great chance to make it 3-0 on 34 minutes but fired wide. The Stags looked comfortable until Carlisle pulled a goal back on 73 minutes when left back Danny Grainger curled in a high cross from about 25 yards out, wide on the left, into the area and Shaun Miller got in front of Pearce to head past Shearer, who just got a hand on it but couldn’t keep it out. It was poor defending from Pearce and brought back memories of Mansfield’s disappointing defending here 10 days ago. Carlisle levelled on 81 minutes courtesy of a bad error from Scott Shearer. Grainger lofted a ball with the outside of his left boot towards the left edge of the area, Shearer came rushing out of his goal but didn’t get there, allowing Kevin Wright to slide the ball across to Charlie Wyke who turned and fired into the empty net from 14 yards out on the left. Mansfield had thrown away the lead, but won the game 5 minutes later with the wonder goal from Danny Rose.

So Mansfield pick up £20,000 in prize money for this victory, not to be sniffed at, to add to the two lots of £10,000 for the earlier wins in the competition, and progress to the third round (the last sixteen), where victory would earn a further £40,000. The draw for the third round is on Thursday morning at 11.30am live on Sky Sports News. It is a free draw, so Mansfield could play any other side that is also through, home or away.

It was a small crowd, as expected, at Brunton Park given the general dissatisfaction with the tournament. I don’t think the format will be the same next year. Before the first game in the Checkatrade Trophy against Doncaster Rovers, I wrote extensively on Stagsnet and in the CHAD why I thought the whole idea of the Checkatrade Trophy this season is flawed, but why I thought we would not see Premier League U23 sides in the Football League in the future. Subsequently, the EFL indeed confirmed that it had completely ruled out the possibility of including Premier League U23 teams in the Football League as part of its “Whole Game Solution”. And then even better news came when it was announced 3 weeks ago that the EFL has completely abandoned all of its “Whole Game Solution” including the potential restructuring to 4 divisions of 20 clubs (which they had been considering because they believed the clubs are playing too many games).

Mansfield made three changes from the side that played the last game, also here 10 days ago in the league. Out went Mitch Rose and Pat Hoban, both with slight injuries which should not keep them out of the next game on Saturday against Colchester. Also out went Oscar Gobern. In came James Baxendale, CJ Hamilton and Ashley Hemmings. Zayn Hakeem and Alex Iacovitti came into the 18 in place of the injured pair. Steve Evans said that he had intended to make five changes but hadn’t been able to. The Stags lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation. Collins and Bennett switched places from the previous game, Collins moving to right back and Bennett to centre half. Bennett had impressed at centre half in the first two games under Steve Evans. Baxendale was on the right and Hamilton on the left with Clements and McGuire in the centre of midfield. Hemmings played just behind Green.

Carlisle made six changes from the side that played the league game against Mansfield and also played in the FA Cup on Saturday against Rochdale, a game that I also saw. Carlisle had gone in to that game against Rochdale with 8 consecutive wins at home and started with confidence but were eventually outplayed by a Rochdale side that impressed me hugely and showed the quality of a side 5th in League One.

Carlisle had Mansfield on the back foot in the opening 8 minutes. On 5 minutes, Grainger picked up a poor ball from Baxendale, crossed in, it was cleared as far as Devitt, who fired over the bar from 14 yards. A minute later, a great diagonal ball from Shaun Miller into the path of McQueen in the area on the right, and his shot from an angle was well saved by Shearer low down. On 8 minutes, Tom Miller lifted a ball over the top of the defence, who were claiming offside, but Shaun Miller was onside, and in acres of space on the right, he fired wide and over from 10 yards. It was a very poor start from the Stags defence.

On 9 minutes, Hamilton squared for Benning who fired over the bar from 28 yards. On 11 minutes, Hemmings turned, span past two defenders, pushed forward and shot wide from 25 yards.

The Stags were ahead on 14 minutes. Green was fouled by Brisley 35 yards from goal. Clements dinked the free kick into the area on the left and Pearce looped a header over the keeper from 8 yards. It was Pearce’s first goal of the season.

On 24 minutes, Green was fouled on the right touchline. Hemmings curled the free kick across the edge of the six yard box and Pearce was just unable to get a touch at the far post.

The Stags scored a second goal on 30 minutes. Clements played a terrific ball out to full back Collins in the area on the right, Collins slid a fine pass into the middle for Green who bundled home from 2 yards, for his 9th goal of the season.

Collins had a great chance to make it 3-0 on 34 minutes. Hamilton was brought down 40 yards from goal. Clements’ free kick into the area was headed down by Pearce, and Collins sent a left footed shot wide from 12 yards.

On 37 minutes, Pearce did well to head back to Shearer from a long ball forward.

The Stags put themselves in trouble on 39 minutes. Baxendale left a back pass to Shearer a bit short, and as Shearer cleared the ball, Lambe charged it down, the clearance struck Lambe and rebounded just wide of the right post. Very poor from Baxendale. No blame attached to Shearer in my opinion.

Hamilton was booked for a slightly late tackle on 44 minutes. A bit harsh.

So the Stags 2-0 ahead at the break and good value for that. After a poor first 8 minutes defensively, the Stags were very much in control.

Half time 0-2

Carlisle bought on Charlie Wyke at half time to go two up front in a 4-4-2 formation, He had scored a hat-trick in the game 10 days ago.

On 50 minutes, Hamilton made a good run down the left and put in a low cross to Hemmings, but as Hemmings was about to shoot, McQueen took the ball off his boot. A minute later, Green made a good run forward, cut inside and squared to Baxendale, who scuffed a shot well wide from 25 yards.

Carlisle, who hadn’t had any opportunity for long throws in the first half, now did, and those towels were out again to dry the ball (see report on game 10 days ago). However at the other end, a towel then appeared as Benning prepared to take a throw-in. This was how it should have been done before.

On 57 minutes, McQueen initially got past Collins on the left, but Collins did well to win the ball back and draw a foul.

On 63 minutes, a poor cross from Baxendale. Moments later another great challenge by Collins.

Hurst replaced Hemmings on 71 minutes.

The Stags looked comfortable until Carlisle pulled a goal back on 73 minutes when left back Grainger curled in a high cross from about 25 yards out, wide on the left, into the area and Shaun Miller got in front of Pearce to head past Shearer, who just got a hand on it but couldn’t keep it out. It was poor defending from Pearce and brought back memories of Mansfield’s disappointing defending here 10 days ago.

Baxendale was booked for a foul 40 yards out on 77 minutes.

Danny Rose replaced the disappointing Baxendale on 79 minutes.

Carlisle levelled on 81 minutes courtesy of a bad error from Shearer. Grainger lofted a ball with the outside of his left boot towards the left edge of the area, Shearer came rushing out of his goal but didn’t get there, allowing Kevin Wright to slide the ball across to Charlie Wyke who turned and fired into the empty net from 14 yards out on the left. Mansfield had thrown away the lead.

On 83 minutes, Green crossed in, just over the unmarked Hurst. Then three corners for the Stags.

Hamilton put in a great tackle on Asamoah on 85 minutes.

The Stags regained the lead courtesy of a stunning 25 yard strike from Danny Rose into the top right corner on 86 minutes, a goal worthy of winning any game. It was his third late goal in consecutive games from the substitutes bench. Rose had been played in by a good crossfield pass from Hurst, and Rose moved forward 15 yards before striking the shot.

On 89 minutes, a long throw-in, was headed away by McGuire, then headed forward by Joyce to Wyke who flicked straight at Shearer from 8 yards.

Jack Thomas replaced Green on 89 minutes.

On 90+2 minutes, Jack Thomas did well to push forward from his own half, he squared to Hurst who also pushed forward and shot goalwards from 20 yards but it was blocked.

On 90+4 minutes, Shaun Miller fired well over the bar from 20 yards.

That was the last chance and the Stags had the victory. It was a great way to win a game, reminiscent of Clements’ fabulous late goal to beat Derby’s youngsters in the previous match in this competition. The Stags have now won 3 games away from home in this competition and await the draw on Thursday.

Man of the match: Lee Collins/Chris Clements

Report by: Martin Shaw at Brunton Park

Line Up:
(4-4-1-1)
Shearer 5 At fault for the 2nd goal with a bad error of judgement. For the 1st goal, he got a hand on it, so maybe he could have done better, although it would have been a magnificent save to keep it out. Made a good save early on from McQueen.
Collins 8 Played at right back. Some good challenges. Great assist for the second goal. Missed a good chance.
Bennett 7 Decent game at centre half.
Pearce 7 Scored his first goal of the season. But at the other end, was at fault for Carlisle’s first goal losing his man Shaun Miller. Other than that, played well.
Benning 7 Decent game.
Baxendale 5 Poor ball allowed an early chance for Carlisle. Poor back-pass put Shearer in trouble and Shearer’s clearance hit Lambe and rebounded just wide. Disappointing.
McGuire 7 Solid.
Clements 8 Good free kick for Pearce’s goal. Great ball to Collins to set up the second goal. Overall very good.
Hamilton 7 Good game. Some good runs, winning one free kick and setting up another chance. Some good tracking back.
Hemmings 6.5 One good free kick, and one good turn and shot.
Green 7.5 Poacher’s goal. Won some free kicks, including the one for the 1st goal. Good run to set up a chance for Baxendale.
