"Matlock fancied a game and we looked at our minute-bank and we felt that we might need the odd one or two more friendlies put in there. It's an extended training session really against a team that don't know what you're doing. Sometimes when you have your in-house stuff, everybody knows what you're doing, so it defeats the object. It'll get the lads a bit more game time, and we can work on a couple more bits."

Classic non league stuff Minute by minute report from http://www.twitter.com/mansfieldtownfc Although he's without an armband, midfielder Adam Chapman skippers the Stags tonight in the absence of Lee Collins. 1- Mitch Rose gets us underway by passing the ball backwards, which is now legal. 2- George Taft gives away an early corner after tackling Jake Green. 3- A well-worked one-two on the edge of the box results in Green's corner being deflected behind. 4- Stags break from the corner with CJ Hamilton who carries the ball all of 50 yards before hitting a shot from 25 yards, which is saved. 7- The lively Green again makes a good run down the right before whipping in a decent cross which Pearce clears. 11- Some nice exchanges between Benning, Rose and Chapman ends with the left-back swinging in a cross from the left, which is just too long. 13- Matlock win a free-kick in the right-back area for an over-zealous challenge by Taft on Green. 15- Baxendale lays the ball off for Benning who whips a good ball in, but no one can connect with it and Matlock clear. 19- A good turn by Trialist in the middle of the pitch results in him winning a free kick, which is taken quickly. 20- Great shielding by Chapman who wins a free-kick as he attempts to shepherd the ball out of play 22- Chapman clips a good ball through the Matlock back four for Yussuf who just skews his shot wide from 15 yards. 25- Another good turn by Trialist results in him being brought down and Stags have a free-kick 30 yards out. 26- CLOSE! Benning swings the ball in but Pearce can't quite direct his header on target. 27- Corner to Stags with Chapman over it on the far side. The ball is cleared away by a good Matlock header. 31- Good pressuring by Yussuf and Baxendale results in the 'keeper miscuing it behind for a corner. Cleared. 37- Benning throws the ball to Baxendale on the edge of the box but his lobbed effort is tame and the 'keeper holds. 43- Good effort by Yussuf who turns after Bennett's pass on the edge of the box and hit's a left-footed shot which is well saved. Collins, Clements, Hemmings, Hurst, Green and D Rose have replaced M Rose, Chapman, Hamilton, Yussuf, Trialist and Baxendale. 51- Stags have started the second half on the front foot as Hurst hits a cross too close to the Matlock 'keeper. 53- An arrowed Hurst cross is hit behind for a corner. The midfielder swings the kick in and Bennett's header is tipped over. 54- Hurst sends another ball towards Bennett and this time his half-volley is cleared off the line. 54- Stags really knocking on the door now as Rose's header from Hurst's cross is headed behind. 56- A long ball over the top is headed behind by Taft as he faces his own goal. 56- More good play by Stags as Rose has a shot saved by the 'keeper's chest after quick build-up play including Green and Clements. 60- The hosts make a double change which results in a reshuffle with former Stag Liam Marsden moving into central midfield. 62- Collins lays the ball off for Taft who hits one from 35 yards, but his strong effort is straight at the 'keeper. 64- Stags are still pressing as Benning's lofted ball is headed on by Rose, but Hemmings can't quite reach it. 65- Stags work a good chance as Benning clips the ball in to Green in the box, who heads it down for Rose but the 'keeper flies out to claim 68- Free-kick to Matlock 35 yards out for a foul committed by Pearce after Collins lost the ball. 73- Green gets clattered 35 yards out and Stags take the free-kick quickly. 74- Nice one touch football between Clements, Hurst and Rose before the latter's cross is smothered by the 'keeper. 79- OFF THE POST! Stags work a quick free-kick into Green who turns his marker and smashes his effort against the post. 79- The ball cannoned off the post and Taft could only direct the rebound over the bar. 81- Another good chance as Green meets Hurst's cross with his head and the 'keeper produces a great save to turn it behind. 83- More chances for Stags as Clements' backheel sets up Rose for a shot which the 'keeper saves well down low to his right. 83- Hurst then works the ball to Green on the edge of the box who rifles a shot just wide. 87- Hemmings lofts a good ball into the box for Benning who cuts it back for Green, but his shot is deflected behind. 88- Hemmings makes a good driving run towards the box before letting fly from 20 yards out, but it goes wide of the left-hand post. The friendly, played at Rossington Main’s ground in Doncaster, saw Stags enjoy the lion's share of possession throughout and were only prevented of a goal by some good goalkeeping and stern defending from the home side. Jake Green, brother of Stags’ striker Matt, was also amongst the Matlock team and looked lively in attack. And it was Matlock, of the Northern Premier League Premier Division, who looked to carve out the early openings, chalking up two corners within the first three minutes. But the club, nicknamed the Gladiators, were almost undone from their second flag-kick. After losing possession, winger CJ Hamilton was allowed to surge forward from the half way line, but his 25-yard drive was stopped by the ‘keeper, diving low to his left. Then on 10 minutes, following neat midfield play, full-back Mal Benning swung in a cross from the left but it was too deep for front man Adi Yussuf to connect. Stags began to dominate proceedings and almost made it pay on 22 minutes when midfielder Adam Chapman threaded it through to Yussuf, but his shot was wayward from 15 yards. Four minutes later, an unnamed trialist earned Stags a free kick after he was upended on the right, 30 yards from goal. Benning then floated the ball deep into the box but defender Krystian Pearce’s header from six yards flew wide. Stags continued to maintain their pressure but Matlock held firm in defence. Mansfield midfielder James Baxendale was next to try his luck when he received the ball from Benning’s left-flank throw, but his half volley from outside the box was aimed straight at the ‘keeper. Shortly before the half-time interval, right-back Rhys Bennett knocked it to Yussuf inside the area, who turned well before firing towards goal, forcing a save from ‘keeper Ryan Musslewhite. At the break, manager Adam Murray fielded six fresh outfield faces, with goalkeeper Scott Shearer and the back four the only players to keep their places from the first half. Matlock were pinned in their own half of the field for the first ten minutes of the second period and had to deny defender Rhys Bennett twice from corners on 52 and 53 minutes. Both taken by midfielder Kevan Hurst, the first saw Bennett’s close range header turned over the bar and his second effort, a low shot from inside the box, had to be cleared off the Matlock goal line. With Stags’ attacks now mounting, hitman Danny Rose powered an effort from the right side of the box at the keeper’s chest with 56 minutes on the clock. Almost ten minutes later, Benning, 35 yards from goal, supplied the ball to Green who attempted to slip it to the advancing Rose, but the Matlock shot stopper was well positioned to intervene. At the other end, Matlock clipped the bar after a cross from the right. Stags’ best chance of the evening came on 79 minutes. From outside the home box, winger Ashley Hemmings laid it low into the feet of Matt Green, whose wonderful turn enabled the striker to shoot against the far post. And then as it came out to defender George Taft, he placed it over the bar. Green was to be denied again just a few minutes later, this time by the goalkeeper, who expertly stopped the frontman’s header following a Kevan Hurst cross. Mansfield were building momentum - but it was Musslewhite again who prevented them from registering a goal. Chris Clements back-heeled the ball on the goal line to Danny Rose, but his shot was stopped by Musslewhite who again showed good handling. With two minutes remaining, Ashley Hemmings smashed the ball goalwards but his shot sizzled to the wrong side of the post as the scoresheet remained untouched. Mansfield had Matlock hanging on in the opening ten minutes and Rhys Bennett was denied from successive corners in the space of a minute, Musslewhite tippng a header over the bar before Partridge was well placed to clear a second header off the line. Musslewhite would then hold a power packed long range blast from Danny Rose who then midway through the half was found by Jake Green’s brother Matt, but again Musslewhite read the danger quickly to keep the ball out. A rare Matlock break saw substitute Jack Siddall’s right wing centre defeat Shearer and strike the bar. The Gladiators’ workrate could not be faulted leaving joint bosses Craig Hopkins and Glenn Kirkwood highly pleased in the knowledge that training sessions and general preparation was bearing fruit in spite of setbacks in the build up to their freshly assembled group’s first game together. True, they lived dangerously before referee Darren England’s final whistle. Matt Green turned majestically to fire a low shot against a post with Musslewhite, for once, beaten, but still the Stags should have scored as George Taft’s follow up was horribly too high. Hopkins and Kirkwood though know there is still some work to do on the offensive side,. but to earn a draw with an organised and disciplined performance against a team three tiers above them in their first game together must earn praise.
