Mansfield Town won the second pre-season friendly of the day 4-3 at Carlton Town this afternoon. Half of the Stags squad were involved, after the other half played at Clipstone at lunchtime. Mansfield were in front through a low Mal Benning strike before Carlton equalised after a Krystian Pearce error. Matt Green put Mansfield in front with a great goal. Carlton levelled just after the break after a mistake by Brian Jensen, but the Stags re-took the lead with a great cross from Rhys Bennett converted by the lively Green. The Stags changed the entire outfield team and extended the lead as Jason Law headed in from an excellent Tom Marriott free-kick. Carlton pulled one back, but Mansfield ran out 4-3 winners.

MORE REFLECTIONS:
After a second week of pre-season training, Mansfield Town sent split squads to two different friendlies on Saturday at local non-league clubs Clipstone and Carlton Town. With the first match kicking off at midday and the second match at 4pm, it meant supporters could attend both games, bringing much needed revenue into the local non-league scene. It was the first time Mansfield’s first team had played two games in a day in pre-season, and I thought it worked very well indeed. There was plenty of time to get from Clipstone to Carlton between the games and enjoy the Sausage Festival at Carlton’s ground. However, the grass at Carlton looked long enough to act as a reminder to supporters that their own gardens might need a trim though, which wasn’t ideal.

It was a first opportunity to see tall new centre half George Taft, who will effectively be the replacement for Ryan Tafazolli. Taft had his first match action for 8 months following injury last season, and he looked comfortable on the ball with good distribution. It was good to see Mal Benning continuing his goalscoring form with a low crisp strike. Man of the match for me was Matt Green, who again looked very sharp, and scored two goals, the first a screamer, chesting the ball down on the left, cutting inside and rifling a bullet shot into the left corner of the net, and the second from a great cross from right back Rhys Bennett. Bennett looked like a full back very keen to get forward at every opportunity. Another player to catch the eye was Kevan Hurst in midfield, with good passing and crosses and good delivery from set-pieces. The Stags changed the entire outfield team with about a quarter of the game left. One piece of play in the latter stages that caught the eye was a high quality free kick routine as young striker Jason Law headed in from an excellent Tom Marriott delivery.

DETAILED REPORT:
It’s the second pre-season friendly of the day for the Stags. Half of the first team squad was at Clipstone at lunchtime. The other half is here at non-league step 4 side Carlton Town.

Stags team (4-1-3-2, Collins in front of the back four):
Brian Jensen;
Rhys Bennett, George Taft, Krystian Pearce, Mal Benning;
Lee Collins;
Kevan Hurst, Chris Clements, Ashley Hemmings;
Danny Rose, Matt Green.

The only first team player not involved today is Jack Thomas, who has a niggle.

The grass looks pretty long to me. Even longer than at Rainworth last Saturday. After the rain of this morning, it’s now windy at Carlton. Mansfield are in last season’s black away kit this afternoon, after playing in amber and blue at lunchtime.

5 mins Clements floated a ball in for Green, Green chested down but by the time he’d dpwn that, a defender had cleared.
9 Good move, Bennett to Hurst to Danny Rose, back to Hurst who puts in a good cross across the corridor of uncertainty in the six-yard box but no-one could get a touch.
11 Good ball across to Danny Rose, whose shot is blocked. He beats the turf in frustration.
13 Green tees up Clements who curls wide from 18 yards.
17 Hurst fires powerfully just over the bar from 25 yards.
19 Free kick from the right 22 yards out. Benning curls well over the bar.
21 Hemmings tries to float a cross to the far post for Danny Rose, but it’s deflected up and easy for the keeper.
23 Taft high ball forward, Carlton keeper comes out for it, but can’t get it because of good strength and positioning from Green. The ball nearly falls for a Green tap in but a defender just clears.
25 A first effort on goal for Carlton as Newton volleys miles over the bar from 25 yards.
28 A Kevan Hurst free kick into the box from the left, headed out to Danny Rose, who powers in a header from 16 yards, but straight to the keeper.
30 GOAL 0-1 Mansfield take the lead as Mal Benning arrows a low shot into the bottom right corner of the net from 18 yards, after a half-clearance reaches him.
37 GOAL 1-1 Carlton are level. A cross in from the right, and a mistake by Pearce allows Curtis Millward to fire into the right corner of the net, wide of Jensen.
41 WHAT A GOAL!! 1-2 The Stags are back in front with a great finish from Matt Green. Green, on the left, chests down a ball from Pearce from inside his own half, Green cuts inside and rifles a bullet shot into the left corner of the net from the edge of the box.
45 Hurst corner from the right. Danny Rose leaps highest, but heads wide under pressure. Rose has a good leap on him.

Half time 1-2

No changes for Mansfield at the start of the second half.
47 mins Great ball forward from Clements for Green to run on to, Green shoots low but straight at the keeper.
48 mins GOAL 2-2 Carlton are level and it’s a goalkeeping mistake. Brian Jensen comes out of his area on the left, and miscues a clearance straight Carlton sub Jack Wholey, who fires a very good shot into the empty net from 30 yards, out on the right. When Jensen retrieves the ball from his net, he punches the crossbar in frustration with himself.
52 Danny Rose wins a free kick on the left just outside the area, almost on the byline. Hurst wastes the free kick.
56 Hurst puts in a high ball from the right to the far post where Hemmings gets in a header which is blocked for a corner.
57 Hurst gets in another cross from the right, Danny Rose heads back across goal, but the whistle goes for a Carlton free kick.
59 GOAL 2-3 Lovely goal for the Stags. Hurst to Bennett out on the right, he puts in a super low cross into the middle, which Green slotted in right footed from 6 yards.
60 Sub: Taft off. Steve Johnson on (he’s just moved up to the academy from the U16’s).
63 Carlton keeper Steggles tips over a close range header from Green. From the resulting corner from the left by Hurst, Bennett heads over.
64 Subs: Green and Danny Rose off. Zayn Hakeem and Jason Law on as the forward pairing.
65 Hemmings gets in a shot from the edge of the box, but it’s deflected taking the sting out of it and an easy save for the keeper.
66 Clements ball for Hakeem in the box, his low left footed shot is saved low down by the keeper.
67 Subs: Hurst and Benning off. Tom Marriott and another youth teamer/U21 on.
69 Subs: Collins and Bennett off. Young Cain Smith and Teddy Bloor on.
71 Subs: Pearce, Clements and Hemmings off. Morgan Ratcliffe (youth team captain at end of last season), Alistair Smith and another youth teamer on. Jensen in still on, but the rest of the team has been changed.
72 GOAL 2-4 Stags extend the lead. A free kick from the left about 30 yards out, taken by Tom Marriott, Jason Law heads in from 8 yards. Neat free kick routine. Jason Law runs off pointing at Tom Marriott for the quality of the delivery.
77 GOAL 3-4 Carlton pull one back. Corner from the left, is squeezed in at far post by Lawrence Gorman. Recriminations among the young Stags defenders for who should have cleared.
84 Jensen saves well from a powerful shot from Kevin Lusamba from a tight angle.
87 Jason Law curls a good effort from the edge of the box, just wide of the left post.
