STAGS BEATEN BY LATE GOAL AGAIN

Martin Shaw and Simon Chamberlain at the One Call Stadium, Field Mill

Mansfield Town lost to a sucker punch of a stoppage time goal at home to Yeovil this afternoon. It was a game that lacked the excitement and drama of the previous two home games, as the Stags had the majority of possession and the majority of chances but lacked quality in the final third. It looked like the game would end 0-0, but in the first minute of 3 minutes of stoppage time, full back Ryan Dickson slotted into the roof of the net from close range after a pull back from the byline. The Stags rarely looked like losing this game and certainly didn’t deserve to do so in our opinion but needed to be better in that final third. The Stags best chances of the afternoon fell to Reggie Lambe who missed a great chance from a corner in the first half and then was desperately unlucky to see his superb shot from 22 yards hit the underside of the bar with Baxendale heading the rebound over on 71 minutes. Lee Collins headed straight at the keeper from a corner, and Chris Clements should have done better from 22 yards when he had time and space to shoot, and Green and Yussuf had chances which the keeper saved. So revenge for Yeovil who of course lost to Reggie Lambe’s stoppage time goal earlier in the season, and the win moves them further away from the bottom of the table after their recent excellent run of form. For Mansfield, the defeats to Newport and Yeovil, both thanks to a late goal, are a bitter pill to swallow with the play-off places still within reach. The Stags are still just 2 points outside those places with 11 games to go. A difficult run of games to follow, against Bristol Rovers, Portsmouth, Wycombe and Northampton. Everything to play for with these good teams to play. The Stags will need to be better in the final third, and finally beat a team that is in the top half of the table, which we haven’t done so far this season. Come on Mansfield!

Mansfield made two changes from side that lost at Newport. Adam Chapman came in for Jamie McGuire. Chapman played despite a broken nose picked up in training. And Reggie Lambe came in for Matty Blair, who was ill. It started as a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Lambe (right) and Baxendale (left) either side of Chapman and Clements, and Daniel playing just behind Green. Yeovil came into the game on a great run of form with 5 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats in their 10 games in 2016, which had started to lift them away from the bottom of the table.

Pitch covers helped to protect parts of the pitch from plenty of rain on Friday and enabled the game to go ahead. Once again, well done to groundsman Mez Merriman and his team for not having a game off this season. There was a heavy shower about 30 minutes before kick off, but the game started in sunshine. There was also a sleet shower during the second half, and a rainbow.

Baxendale was fouled on the left wing level with the edge of the penalty area within the first 30 seconds. Benning’s free kick clearly came off a Yeovil player for a corner, but a goal kick was given.

On 4 minutes, Alfei played the ball forward, Clements nodded down to Lambe who took a good first touch but then lost the ball on the edge of the area.

Good defending from Alfei on 6 minutes as Zoko broke past Collins who’d given the ball away. Moments later, Yeovil keeper Krysiak caught the ball right on the edge of his area. The linesman signalled that he was not outside the area. It looked very close and we thought his hands were just outside the area (from the video, it’s not conclusive but looks like he probably catches just outside the area).

Good play by Baxendale on 8 minutes as he tried to put Daniel through on goal but the keeper was out quickly.

On 14 minutes, Green squared to Lambe, who was 24 yards out. His shot was pushed out by the keeper, Smith tried to clear, it hit Baxendale in the face and rebounded just wide. A good effort by Lambe, and Baxendale nearly had a freak goal. On 18 minutes, Daniel to Baxendale, who crossed for Green but the keeper claimed in front of him.

A good opening by the Stags playing with a fast tempo getting the ball forward that just lacked a goal.

The Stags should have gone in front on 21 minutes. Chapman’s corner from the right, reached Lambe who controlled well with his first touch but had time and space to shoot with his second touch and fired well over and wide of the bar. It was a glorious opportunity for Lambe who should have done better.

On 23 minutes, a free kick from Benning from 40 yards was headed across goal by Collins, but cleared.

A free kick for Yeovil on 27 minutes saw them in the Stags box for almost the first time, and Shearer saved with his feet from Smith.

Green had a chance for a one-on-one on 29 minutes as he muscled towards goal, but the ball seemed to get stuck under his feet allowing Roberts to put in a great tackle for a corner. On 31 minutes, Chapman lobbed a ball into the area but the keeper claimed at full stretch.

On 38 minutes, Alfei crossed from the right and Baxendale headed well wide of the right post.

Then on 40 minutes, Benning fired well wide from 30 yards from the left. He’s not re-captured his shooting boots yet since returning from injury.

Polite applause for the Stags at half time. Mansfield had the majority of possession but didn’t do enough in the final third. The best chance fell to Lambe when he fired over from a corner, whereas Shearer saved well with his feet from Smith.

Half time 0-0

On 46 minutes, Daniel played inside to Green who couldn’t manufacture a shooting chance. On 49 minutes, Chapman gave the ball away horribly but redeemed himself with a good tackle just outside his own area.

The Stags went close on 54 minutes. Daniel did well to earn a corner. And from the corner from the left by Chapman, Collins had a free header which he headed straight at keeper Krysiak. A great opportunity.

The weather turned as a heavy sleet shower engulfed the ground.

On 56 minutes, a good interception by Benning as Yeovil crossed from the left. Then another cross from the left went through everyone for a goalkick.

Collins was booked on 57 minutes for an earlier challenge on the halfway line when the referee waved play on.

Yussuf replaced Daniel on 63 minutes.

On 66 minutes, good play by Lambe to set up Clements for a shot from the edge of the D, but unmarked and with time to pick his spot, he screwed a shot wide of the left post.

A minute later, Baxendale broke forward and fired over and 25 yards. Straight to the other end and Tafazolli did well to clear a cross from the right. On 70 minutes, Dickson sent a left footed shot from 25 yards well over the bar.

The Stags a glut of chances on 71 minutes. Yussuf played the ball over the top for Green, who broke down the right, and his shot from a tight angle was pushed behind for a corner by the keeper. The resulting corner from the right by Chapman, was knocked back by Yussuf to Lambe, who fired a superb shot from 22 yards against the underside of the bar. It came out to Baxendale who tamely headed the rebound over the bar when he should have got it on target. So unlucky for Lambe. Moments later, Yussuf muscled his way forward on the right and his shot from a tight angle was blocked by the keeper, Lambe had a shot blocked, Clements got to the loose ball first but his effort from close range screwed out to the right hand side and didn’t even go out of play.

Kavenagh replaced Baxendale on 75 minutes.

A rare opportunity for Yeovil on 77 minutes as Bird shot from a tight angle and Shearer did well to put behind.

On 78 minutes, Kavenagh tried a shot from 22 yards but it lacked power and was blocked.

Yeovil came close to a shock lead on 80 minutes, as Campbell’s low cross-shot from the left went inches past the right post and with Bird inches away from poking it in. A minute later, Goodship shot well wide from 22 yards.

Jack Thomas replaced Chapman on 81 minutes.

On 82 minutes, Benning dinked a cross from the left, it missed everyone and was just wide of the right post.

The Stags had the ball in the net on 89 minutes but the whistle had long gone. Jack Thomas played forward for Green, who was clearly offside, and put the ball in the net, but already knew he was offside. He could have been booked for that but wasn’t.

It looked like the game would end 0-0. But in the first minute of 3 minutes of stoppage time, a sucker punch for the Stags as Yeovil won it. Goodship got to the byline of the left and pulled back for Dickson who got between the defenders to slot into the roof of the net from close range. Absolute sickener for Mansfield who really didn’t look like losing this game and certainly didn’t deserve to do so.

The Stags were unable to create any chances to equalise and fell to a second successive 1-0 defeat to a late goal, by a team near the bottom, and both were undeserved in our opinion. This was a game that really lacked the excitement and drama of the last two home games and ended in bitter disappointment.

Man of the match: Clements/Tafazolli

Report by: Martin Shaw and Simon Chamberlain at the One Call Stadium, Field Mill

Shearer 6.5 Had little to do: a good save with his legs in the first half and one save in the second half. Couldn’t do much about the goal.
Alfei 7 Good game. Some good defending.
Collins 6.5 Defended well. Should have done better with a glorious chance from a free header.
Tafazolli 7 Generally defended solidly.
