A young Mansfield Town side came from behind to win 2-1 at Alfreton Town this evening in an enjoyable game.

After an entertaining but goalless first half in which both sides had chances to take the lead including Farrend Rawson hitting the bar, the Stags should have been ahead on 47 minutes when Tyrese Sinclair charged down an attempted clearance from Alfreton keeper George Willis, the ball bounced kindly for Sinclair who found himself with an open net to fire into, but incredibly put his shot into the side netting from the left. Alfreton took the lead on 56 minutes when centre half Tom Allan headed in from a corner from the right from Bobby Johnson. The Stags equalised after 80 minutes when young Jack Deakin laid the ball back to Taylor Anderson whose brilliant cross into the box from the left was expertly headed into the net by Nathan Caine. A great goal. Deakin and Caine both impressed me in the FA Youth Cup last season while Taylor Anderson later broke into the youth team last season from the Under 16 side! The Stags won the game a minute into stoppage time when Keaton Ward did well to feed Sinclair and Sinclair found the back of the net with a low shot from the edge of the box. Sinclair had had a frustrating night with a number of efforts at goal, but he was lively all evening and his undoubted class finally shone through with that winner. Fine play from Ward too.

Plenty of impressive performances in the Stags side, including in defence where Farrend Rawson and young George Cooper did well, James Clarke got in some good crosses, and young Taylor Anderson caught the eye, including winning his first header against the towering former Stag Matt Rhead. And it was very pleasing to see Nathan Caine scoring such a fine header.

The Stags visit Hull City tomorrow at the KCOM stadium with a midday kick-off with a more experienced side. But they will be without George Lapslie (sore knee) and Harry Charsley (thigh injury) who will be missing as a precaution with slight injuries.

The team that started the game at Alfreton was:
Marek Stech;
James Clarke, Farrend Rawson, George Cooper, Ryan Burke;
Keaton Ward (defensive midfielder), George Scott (trialist, released from Rotherham academy last season), Jason Law, Tyrese Sinclair;
Jordan Bowery, Jimmy Knowles.

Substitutes:
Corey O'Keeffe (for Law, HT)
Taylor Anderson (for Burke, 61)
Nathan Caine (for Bowery, 75)
Jack Deakin (for Rawson, 75)

Alfreton had the first chance of the match when Tom Allan’s shot from inside the area was deflected over the bar. I thought Mansfield could possibly have had a free kick before he got his shot in.

An excellent block from Rawson from a Dayle Southwell shot after 10 minutes.

The Stags went close after 12 minutes. Jordan Bowery did well to get to the edge of the area and his low shot was parried away by the keeper and Jimmy Knowles fired wide from the rebound. Three minutes later, another good chance as Bowery put in a fine cross from the left and Sinclair headed towards the top corner of the net but the keeper easily saved.

At the other end a couple of good pieces of play from Rawson at the back. After 18 minutes, great skill and a fine run from Sinclair, he tried to feed Knowles but Knowles was offside.

A low shot from Dayle Southwell was easily saved by Stech after 21 minutes.

Ryan Burke was booked for a challenge on Tuton after 22 minutes.

A minute later Adam Lund sent a shot just wide via a deflection.

The Stags were unlucky after 26 minutes. Great play from Sinclair to find George Scott whose shot was blocked for a corner. And from the corner, taken by Sinclair, Rawson headed against the bar. Rawson hasn’t scored for the Stags yet in any sort of fixture.

On 31 minutes, a great cross from James Clarke to Bowery who was unmarked and headed straight at the keeper.

A good challenge by Burke on Matt Rhead in the area after 33 minutes, Rhead then fouled Burke.

Tuton picked up a yellow card for a bad challenge on Scott after 35 minutes.

A minute later, Burke sent a snap-shot just over the bar.

An entertaining first half with chances for both sides.

Half time 0-0

Jason Law had gone down late in the first half holding his ankle, and it was confirmed after the game by Nigel Clough that he had aggravated his ankle injury. He was replaced at half time by Corey O’Keeffe.

The Stags should have been ahead on 47 minutes when Tyrese Sinclair charged down an attempted clearance from Alfreton keeper George Willis, the ball bounced kindly for Sinclair who found himself with an open net to fire into, but incredibly put his shot into the side netting from the left.

Good play by Bobby Johnson after 49 minutes as he got past 3 Stags players and was finally blocked by James Clarke or Cooper. Moments later it was Cooper or Scott who blocked another shot.

Bowery went close after 51 minutes. His low shot from the edge of the area was saved at full stretch by the keeper. Knowles was nearly on the end of the rebound but it was cleared. Then Knowles fired over the bar from 6 yards.

Josh Clackstone sent a shot from 25 yards wide of the right post on 53 minutes.

At the other end on 54 minutes, a good cross from James Clarke, and Tom Allan nearly turned it into his own net.

At the other end again, good defending from George Cooper to block for a corner.

Alfreton took the lead from that corner on 56 minutes when centre half Tom Allan headed in from the corner from the right from Bobby Johnson. He was unmarked.

Alfreton sub Dan Bradley found Tuton who shot high and wide on the hour.

Ryan Burke was suffering with cramp and replaced by Taylor Anderson after 61 minutes. Taylor Anderson later broke into the youth team last season from the Under 16 side!

An Alfreton trialist’s shot was saved by Stech after 62 minutes and the trialist sent the rebound was over the bar. This came after Cooper tried to shepherd the ball put and lost the ball.

Former Stags youth teamer Rio Molyneux replaced Tuton after 66 minutes. Rio Molyneux was excellent in the Stags’ FA Youth cup run of 2019/20 showing incredible pace down the right wing.

Matt Rhead was having an ongoing tussle with James Clarke. From the gantry, I heard Rhead shout to James Clarke “less of that young-un” after 70 minutes.

An Alfreton long throw after 71 minutes was knocked straight up in the air, and Alfreton sub Ethan Stewart headed it over the bar.

Good play from Knowles after 72 minutes, he found Sinclair who cut inside and fired wide of the right post.

Two more substitutions for the Stags after 75 minutes as Jack Deakin and Nathan Caine replaced Rawson and Bowery. O’Keeffe went in to central defence, Caine to right midfield, and Deakin joined Knowles up front. Rhead was also replaced.

A low cross from Knowles just evaded Deakin after 79 minutes.

The Stags equalised after 80 minutes when young Jack Deakin laid the ball back to Taylor Anderson whose brilliant cross into the box from the left was expertly headed into the net by a leaping Nathan Caine. A great goal.

James Clarke pushed forward into the area after 83 minutes but fired well wide. Good play to get there though.

Stech saved well from an Alfreton trialist’s shot from 30 yards after 84 minutes.

Sinclair sent a free kick from 35 yards over the bar on 85 minutes. Then three minutes later, his free kick into the area was over everybody.

The Stags won the game a minute into stoppage time when Keaton Ward did well to feed Sinclair with a little back-heel and Sinclair found the back of the net with a low shot from the edge of the box. Sinclair had had a frustrating night with a number of efforts at goal, but he was lively all evening and his undoubted class finally shone through with that winner. Fine play from Ward too.

It was good to see the Stags youngsters come good and come from behind to win the game.
