MAYNARD GOAL IN EXTRA-TIME STOPPAGE TIME SENDS STAGS INTO ROUND 3 OF THE FA CUP

Martin Shaw at the One Call Stadium, Field Mill

Mansfield Town are through to the third round of the FA Cup thanks to a goal from substitute Nicky Maynard with the penultimate kick of the game in extra-time against National League Dagenham & Redbridge this afternoon. Just when it looked like the game would be going to a penalty shoot-out, Maynard turned the loose ball into the net from close range after Jordan Bowery’s shot was saved.
The Stags had 26 shots, 11 on target during the 120 minutes compared to 8 for Dagenham, 5 on target, but it looked like a penalty shoot-out would be needed to separate the sides until Maynard’s goal. The Stags have not won a penalty shoot-out since knocking out Slough Town in the FA Cup in 2012 on the way to facing Liverpool, so it was just as well the last gasp winner came!
Dagenham took the lead after 19 minutes. The lively Myles Weston, who gave Mal Benning a difficult first half down the right wing, threaded a great ball forward for Paul McCallum to run onto in the area and McCallum fired a fantastic shot across Marek Stech and into the left corner of the net from a tight angle on the right.
The Stags were level after 25 minutes. Great play from Jordan Bowery muscling his way past Abu Ogogo and into the area on the left before sliding a perfect ball across the edge of the area to Harry Charsley, who side-footed past the keeper from 16 yards. Charsley’s 4th goal of the season and it had similarities to his goal at Forest Green.
The Stags were nearly ahead after 33 minutes. Bowery again slid a good ball across the edge of the area to Ollie Clarke. Clarke switched the ball from his left foot to his right foot and curled a great shot towards the top right corner of the net but the keeper made a super save tipping it over the bar.
A fair scoreline of 1-1 at half-time with Dagenham looking much better than a team near the foot of the National League.
The Stags hit the post after 68 minutes as Kellan Gordon found Andy Cook and Cook teed up Clarke for a shot from the edge of the area which was deflected by centre-half Will Wright onto the outside of the right post with the keeper motionless.
Substitute Jamie Reid went close after 81 minutes when his shot brought a good save from the keeper after more good set-up play by Bowery. Three minutes later, another good chance for Reid as Gordon found him with a fine low cross and Reid took his shot first time but it was straight at the keeper.
The Stags nearly gifted Dagenham a winner after 90+3 minutes as Benning conceded an unnecessary free kick, and from the free kick from the right taken by Sam Deering, centre half Luke Croll headed just over the bar. There would have been no coming back from that.
Into extra-time, and the Stags had a goal disallowed after 98 minutes as Clarke did well to cut along the edge of the area to find space to shoot and his left-footed effort deflected past the stranded keeper into the net off Reid. Reid was a fraction offside as shown by the video replay. The flag went up extremely late though after the Stags players had started to celebrate.
A moment of individual brilliance nearly put the Stags ahead after 108 minutes as Charsley crossed from the right and Reid launched an overhead kick towards the roof of the net but the keeper tipped it over. What an effort from Jamie Reid. Shades of Danny Rose scoring in this competition three years ago at Shaw Lane.
The Stags brought on keeper Aidan Stone to replace Stech for the penalty shoot-out in the final minute. Stone’s only touch of the ball was to launch it straight down the middle, Bowery headed on, it was headed away by Ogogo, Clarke headed it forward to Reid, back to goal. Reid turned away from Ogogo and slid a super ball forward for Bowery to run on to in the area. Bowery’s left footed shot was half-saved by the keeper, left back Johnson tried to clear, but it fell for Maynard who swivelled and turned an awkwardly bouncing ball into the net from 6 yards. The clock read 120 minutes and 59 seconds, with one second of stoppage time in extra time remaining.
There was just time for Dagenham to kick off and with one second remaining, Brundle tried to score direct from the kick off but sent his shot over the bar.
It was a dramatic end, and the Stags were through.
The draw for round 3 is on Monday night at 7pm.
The next game for the Stags is on Wednesday night at high-flying Cambridge United. Cambridge will have 2,000 fans at the game (and as a result, the kick-off has been moved to 7.45, so join us on iFollow Stags from 7.35pm). Having fans at the game will give Cambridge something of a home advantage that no side has had in any Stags game this season, but the bigger picture is that it is great to start getting fans back to games.

For winning the game, the Stags received £25,500.

The game was broadcast live on the BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport website, for which the Stags received £12,500. This is incidentally less money than the Stags received from showing the Round One game at Sunderland on iFollow Stags by my back-of-an-envelope calculation: the number of match passes sold for that Sunderland game was 3300 by Sunderland and 1035 by Mansfield. With the profits shared between the clubs, both sides effectively sold 2167 match passes. From each £10 match pass, the total amount of profit a club makes per pass is approximately £8.34 (according to https://www.bradfordcityfc.co.uk/news/2020/september/ifollow-financial-benefits--outlined/), so Mansfield made just over £18,000 from the Sunderland game. Of course, the number of match passes for the Dagenham game, if it had been shown on iFollow instead of BBC iPlayer, would have been nowhere near the number for the Sunderland game, so the Stags were better off with the £12,500 in this case.

The Stags have therefore made £73,000 from the FA Cup run so far (broadcast money: Rd1 £18,000; Rd2 £12,500;
prize money: Rd1 £16,972; Rd2 £25,500).

DETAILED REPORT:

Mansfield made two changes from the side that lost to Harrogate. Andy Cook started in place of Nicky Maynard who was on the bench. James Perch missed out with a strained hamstring (Nigel Clough explained that he had managed to complete the 90 minutes against Harrogate but was pretty sore afterwards, and “we’ll just have to see how he is day-to-day”). In came Ryan Sweeney. George Maris returned from his rib injury for a place on the bench replacing Perch in the 18.

Dagenham & Redbridge arrived having beaten Grimsby 3-1 at home in Round One. They had not played for a week and a half but were 3 games unbeaten. They were 18th in the National League with just two wins from their opening 8 games of the season. Dagenham’s captain was Abu Ogogo, on loan from Bristol Rovers. Ogogo was signed by Graham Coughlan at Bristol Rovers but frozen out after he left.

It was a slightly foggy day in Mansfield, but nowhere near thick enough to affect the game.

The Stags well in the opening 5 minutes keeping hold of the ball well. After 4 minutes, a great move involving Rawson, Clarke, Bowery, Charsley then Gordon and Gordon’s low ball in from the right was deflected off a defender and Cook who was right in front of goal couldn’t turn it into the net, in fact it more or less hit Cook’s leg and went wide.

No more chances for either side until Dagenham took the lead after 19 minutes. The lively Myles Weston threaded a great ball forward for Paul McCallum to run onto in the area and McCallum fired a fantastic shot across Stech and into the left corner of the net from a tight angle on the right.

After 20 minutes, a diagonal high ball into the area from Benning, Cook stretched to head it downwards towards the bottom left corner of the net and the keeper tipped it wide. From McLaughlin’s corner, the ball was not cleared and Bowery turned and shot over the bar from 6 yards.

After 23 minutes, great play by Gordon and a great cross which Cook headed over the bar, unable to get over the top of it. At the other end a minute later, Wilson went down in the area near the byline in a sandwich between Gordon and Rawson but there didn’t seem to be any contact.

The Stags were level after 25 minutes. Great play from Bowery muscling his way past Ogogo and into the area on the left before sliding a perfect ball across the edge of the area to Charsley, who side-footed past the keeper from 16 yards. Charsley’s 4th goal of the season and it had similarities to his goal at Forest Green.

A good opportunity for Dagenham to regain the lead two minutes later. Wilson turned well just outside the area, he put in a good cross and McCallum headed wide of the left post.

Sweeney headed away a ball into the Stags box, he had headed several away in the first half.

Then a very high cross from McLaughlin, Cook attacked it and headed wide of the right post. A minute after that, loose play from the Stags allowed Deering a chance to shoot, his shot deflected off Clarke and Stech got down low to save it.

After 37 minutes, Gordon crossed well from the right, Cook got up well but headed wide of the right post. After 39 minutes, Weston curled in a cross from the right into a good area, inexplicably Gordon left it and just watched as his man Deering came in at the far post and just missed it.

After 43 minutes, a good ball from McLaughlin to Clarke, who fired well over the bar. At the other end, Wilson muscled his way into the area after 45+1 minutes but his low shot gave Stech an easy save.

A fair scoreline of 1-1 at half-time with Dagenham looking much better than a team near the foot of the National League.

Half time 1-1

The chances kept on coming in the second half. After 47 minutes, Weston skipped past Benning, and Wilson cut inside into the area. Wilson’s low shot was saved by Stech low down.

Gordon crossed from the right after 52 minutes, and Cook headed at the keeper. A minute later, Clarke’s powerful shot from 35 yards was wide of the right post.

McLaughlin had to go off injured after 57 minutes. He had got a “nasty whack on his ankle” according to Clough, and “we’ll see how he is towards Wednesday.” On came Maris.

A great cross from Benning after 61 minutes, Cook met it with a crisp header but it was 2 yards over the bar.

Gordon did well to win a corner after 66 minutes. The corner from Maris was cleared.

The Stags hit the post after 68 minutes as Gordon found Andy Cook and Cook teed up Clarke for a shot from the edge of the area which was deflected by centre-half Will Wright onto the outside of the right post with the keeper motionless. From the resulting corner, Cook met it on the half-volley and fired high over the bar.

Deering’s curling shot from 25 yards was easily caught by Stech after 70 minutes.

Clarke, 25 yards out, turned and his low left-footed shot was wide of the right post.

Reid replaced Cook after 76 minutes.

Gordon got in a good position for a cross after 79 minutes, but put it behind for a corner.

Reid went close after 81 minutes when his shot brought a good save from the keeper after more good set-up play by Bowery. Three minutes later, another good chance for Reid as Gordon found him with a fine low cross and Reid took his shot first time but it was straight at the keeper. At the other end, Deering shot across the face of goal from a tight angle after 85 minutes. A minute after that, Bowery headed straight down to the keeper from Benning’s cross.

The Stags nearly gifted Dagenham a winner after 90+3 minutes as Benning conceded an unnecessary free kick, and from the free kick from the right taken by Sam Deering, centre half Luke Croll headed just over the bar. There would have been no coming back from that. A minute later at the other end and Bowery’s tame shot from the edge of the area was straight at the keeper.

Full time 1-1

Into extra-time. Brilliant play from Bowery on the left after 93 minutes, he played the ball inside to Maris just outside the area, but Maris skied his shot well over. A good cross from the right by Clarke a minute later, Reid did well to get a header in but it was wide of the right post and hit the stanchion.

The Stags had a goal disallowed after 98 minutes as Clarke did well to cut along the edge of the area to find space to shoot and his left-footed effort deflected past the stranded keeper into the net off Reid. Reid was a fraction offside as shown by the video replay. The flag went up extremely late though after the Stags players had started to celebrate.
Gordon crossed from the right after 102 minutes, Reid got in a header but it was easily saved on the line.

On the stroke of half time in extra time Reid crossed and put it behind for a goal kick. The Stags had done that too often.

Half time in extra time 1-1

A great block by Sweeney after 107 minutes from McCallum’s shot. Straight to the other end and Reid found Clarke, and his shot was blocked too.

Dagenham were awarded a free kick on the left after a clash of heads after 111 minutes between Gordon and Deering. It wasn’t a foul and should have been a drop-ball. Will Wright tried a cross-cum-shot from the free kick from a tight angle and Stech punched it away. Three minutes later, a foul by Clarke on Deering inside the D. Bad place to concede a free kick. Wright again took the free kick, from 20 yards, and blasted it into the wall which did its job.

Maynard replaced Charsley after 115 minutes.

Maris shot from 20 yards a minute later, after a Gordon cross was cleared to him, but it was so wide it stayed in play and reached Reid. Reid couldn’t control it though and was out for a goal kick.

The Stags brought on keeper Stone to replace Stech for the penalty shoot-out in the 120th and final minute. It was the fourth substitution. You are allowed four substitutes when a game goes to extra time. For a while it was touch and go whether the ball would actually go out of play to enable the substitution, but Sweeney was able to head it out. Manager Clough explained afterwards that they had been practicing penalties and Stone had been the better keeper so it was pre-planned for him to take over in case of a shootout.

The sheer volume of chances the Stags created mean I think that they deserved to win. But credit to Dagenham who put in a good performance.

On to Cambridge on Wednesday. Hopefully the Stags can recover quickly from the exertions of 120 minutes here and put in a good performance.
