STAGS HIT OLDHAM FOR SIX WITH MAYNARD HAT-TRICK

Martin Shaw at the One Call Stadium, Field Mill

Mansfield Town followed up last week’s 1-0 win at Grimsby with a stunning 6-1 win against Oldham Athletic at the One Call Stadium, for back-to-back wins for the first time since April. The Stags played some superb football creating an incredible 29 chances and taking six of them. All 29 chances are listed in this report. Oldham had two players sent off after 37 minutes, Tomas Egert getting a straight red for a sliding and out of control challenge on Mal Benning, a similar challenge to that which Stags defenders Matt Preston and Hayden White have received straight red cards for this season, and Filipe Morais sent off for a second bookable challenge, a foul on Neal Bishop, that occurred less than two seconds before Egert’s challenge on Benning. Oldham down to nine men, but the Stags were already firmly in control of the game by that point and two goals ahead.
The Stags took the lead after 31 minutes as Conor Shaughnessy found Kellan Gordon on the right wing and Gordon whipped in a magnificent cross to the edge of the six-yard box where Nicky Maynard headed into the left of the net. It was 2-0 three minutes later as Otis Khan mesmerised the Oldham defence on the left, ran along the byline, and crossed low to Maynard who beat former Stags loanee Alex Iacovitti to the ball to knock it into the net from a yard. Brilliant from Khan and a poacher’s goal from Maynard.
Then came the two red cards for Oldham, but Oldham pulled a goal back after 43 minutes as Christopher Missilou crossed from the byline on the left with some pace into the middle, Conrad Logan dived to push the cross away but it fell invitingly for Tom Hamer to knock the loose ball into the net from 7 yards.
The Stags regained the two goal advantage after 45+4 minutes as Maynard completed a first half-hat-trick. The excellent Shaughnessy nicked the ball off Mohamed Maouche halfway inside the Stags half, as Maouche slipped over, and Shaughnessy played a magnificent 45 yard through ball forward for Maynard to run on to, go around the keeper and slide into the empty net. What an 18 minutes for Maynard with those 3 goals. And an absolutely breathless end to the half with four goals and two red cards.
It was 4-1 after 56 minutes as Mal Benning got into the area on the left and sent in a low cross-shot which deflected off David Wheater and through the keeper’s legs. Benning’s cross-shot would surely have been saved by the keeper if it had not taken the deflection but crucially the pitchside and main camera footage shows that it was on target hence the goal will be credited to Benning. A stroke of luck for the Stags. LATER UPDATE: the goal was taken away from Mal Benning and credited as an own goal, by the EFL Dubious Goals committee.
It was 5-1 after 66 minutes and this time it was an assist for Maynard. Maynard forced his way past Dylan Fage just inside the Oldham half and unselfishly laid the ball to his left into the path of sub Dapo Afolayan who knocked the ball into the empty net from a couple of yards. Dylan Fage was concussed in the incident and had to be stretchered off and Oldham tweeted after the game “An update on Dylan, he’s feeling much better now after his concussion where he was unconscious for a short while on the pitch. He’d personally like to thank the @mansfieldtownfc Captain Krystian Pearce who put him in the recovery position before assistance arrived.” Outstanding from Pearce.
The Stags made it 6-1 after 83 minutes with another stroke of luck. A good run from Afolayan into the area and he went down under a challenge from Hamer as he headed for the byline. The referee gave a penalty though replays show that Hamer got the ball. 17 year old Jimmy Knowles, who scored his first first team goal on Tuesday in the Leasing.com Trophy, stepped up to take the penalty and sent the keeper the wrong way for his first football league goal. A stat from Paul Taylor is that Knowles became the Stags' youngest ever penalty scorer (at 17 years, 260 days, taking the record from Peter Morris who was 17 years, 327 days old when he scored from the penalty spot against Gillingham in September 1961).
It finished 6-1, it could have been many more, and it was great entertainment. Oldham will feel unlucky, and they were with some of the goals, but boss Dino Maamria was well off the mark when he complained post match about the red cards, as they were nailed on.
Plenty of super performances throughout the Stags side, with Conor Shaughnessy outstanding in midfield, but I can’t look any further than Nicky Maynard for man of the match with a first half hat-trick and a further assist.

It was Mansfield’s biggest win since the 6-1 win over Accrington in the EFL Cup last season, the biggest league win since the 8-1 win against Barrow in the Conference in February 2013, and the biggest win in the Football League since the 6-1 win against Tranmere in October 2002.

Mansfield made one change from the side that beat Grimsby last Saturday. Hayden White was suspended for three games following his red card. In came Conor Shaughnessy. The Stags switched to 4-4-2 with Shaughnessy in central midfield with Bishop, and with MacDonald (right) and Khan (left) either side of them. Jimmy Knowles came into the 18 with White suspended, a reward for his performance in the Leasing.com Trophy. No place in the 18 for Bobby Olejnik, who returned from injury in the Leasing.com Trophy. No news whether Olejnik was injured or not, that will probably have to wait for the midweek press conference.

If you read my report from Tuesday’s game, or listened to the commentary, you’ll know that chairman John Radford, watching the game live on iFollow Stags, as he always does when he and Carolyn are not at the game in person, sent me the video of Crewe’s goal, filmed from the TV gantry on the opposite side of the ground, to clear up our utter confusion in commentary of how it was a goal. What I didn’t say was that he also promised to bring me an iPad with a login for watching the match live on iFollow Stags so that we can have it in front of us during commentary so we can watch replays of key incidents and accurately reflect them to listeners. Sure enough, before the game, John came up to the press box and presented me and Dean with the iPad. As one listener pointed out on twitter, I doubt you’d get many football club owners helping out like that. Thanks John! And it was already useful today for one or two incidents!

It was a pleasant day in Mansfield.

I’m going to keep a tally of Mansfield’s efforts at goal (eg shot 1, shot 2) in the following detailed report.

Mansfield created the first chance of the game after 7 minutes as Maynard slid a super ball across to Rose on the edge of the area, Rose got in a low shot which the keeper pushed away (shot 1). At the other end, a good header away by Rose from a Morais free kick.

A golden chance for the Stags after 14 minutes. Rose did brilliantly to charge down an Oldham ball forward on the halfway line, it span away to Maynard, Maynard then played a great crossfield pass back to Rose, Rose took a touch and lifted a shot over the keeper from just inside the box and just wide of the right post (shot 2).

A minute later, MacDonald found Rose on the edge of the area on the left, Rose fired in a low shot that was easily saved by the keeper at his near post (shot 3).

Good tracking back by Khan after 17 minutes.

Mansfield were knocking the ball around really nicely.

After 27 minutes, a great run by Khan from the edge of the centre circle into the area on the left, and he shot across the keeper and just wide of the right post (shot 4).

The Stags took the lead after 31 minutes as Conor Shaughnessy found Kellan Gordon on the right wing and Gordon whipped in a magnificent cross to the edge of the six-yard box where Nicky Maynard headed into the left of the net (shot 5).

Filipe Morais, the former Crawley caretaker manager, was booked for clattering into Benning after 33 minutes. That was to become significant a few minutes later.

It was 2-0 after 34 minutes as Otis Khan mesmerised the Oldham defence on the left, ran along the byline, and crossed low to Maynard who beat Alex Iacovitti to the ball to knock it into the net from a yard (shot 6). Brilliant from Khan and a poacher’s goal from Maynard.

Oldham down to nine men, and with the Stags already firmly in control of the game.

After 41 minutes, Shaughnessy flicked a lovely ball with the outside of the his right boot to MacDonald on the right, MacDonald slide a cross-shot across the face of goal which Maynard just couldn’t get on the end of (shot 7).

Oldham pulled a goal back after 43 minutes as Christopher Missilou crossed from the byline on the left with some pace into the middle, Conrad Logan dived to push the cross away but it fell invitingly for Tom Hamer to knock the loose ball into the net from 7 yards.

On 45 minutes, Khan shot well over the bar from 30 yards (shot 8). Then on 45+3 minutes, a good run from Gordon from the edge of the centre circle to the edge of the D and he sent a left footed shot over the bar (shot 9).

The Stags regained the two goal advantage after 45+4 minutes as Maynard completed a first half-hat-trick. The excellent Shaughnessy nicked the ball off Mohamed Maouche halfway inside the Stags half, as Maouche slipped over, and Shaughnessy played a magnificent 45 yard through ball forward for Maynard to run on to, go around the keeper and slide into the empty net (shot 10). What an 18 minutes for Maynard with those 3 goals. And an absolutely breathless end to the half with four goals and two red cards.

Half time 3-1

After 48 minutes, Gordon fired a cleanly struck effort over the bar from 25 yards (shot 11). After 50 minutes, Khan ran from inside his own half to the edge of the area and curled a shot over the bar (shot 12). At the other end on 53 minutes, Sylla sent a shot hopelessly wide from 20 yards.

Cook replaced Rose after 54 minutes. Rose was down with an injury. After the game, Dempster said it was just a precaution, and was pretty sure he'd be fine.

It was 4-1 after 56 minutes as Mal Benning got into the area on the left and sent in a low cross-shot which deflected off David Wheater and through the keeper’s legs. Benning’s cross-shot would surely have been saved by the keeper if it had not taken the deflection but crucially the pitchside and main camera footage shows that it was on target hence the goal will be credited to Benning (shot 13). A stroke of luck for the Stags. LATER UPDATE: the goal was taken away from Mal Benning and credited as an own goal, by the EFL Dubious Goals committee.

Dapo Afolayan replaced MacDonald after 60 minutes. MacDonald got a good ovation.

Afolayan was straight into the action, fouled just outside the area. Khan took the resulting free kick, from 24 yards, to the left of centre, but fired a poor effort over the bar (shot 14).

Pearce was booked for a foul on Smith after 65 minutes.

It was 5-1 after 66 minutes and this time it was an assist for Maynard. Maynard forced his way past Dylan Fage just inside the Oldham half and unselfishly laid the ball to his left into the path of sub Dapo Afolayan who knocked the ball into the empty net from a couple of yards (shot 15).

Jimmy Knowles replaced Maynard after 69 minutes. A standard ovation for Maynard of course.

Benning was fouled just outside the area after 76 minutes. Benning took the free kick himself and was just wide of the right post. That was close (shot 16). Bishop found Khan after 77 minutes, and Khan’s low shot was deflected to the keeper (shot 17).

Good play from Afolayan after 79 minutes to tee up Bishop for a shot from 25 yards. It was heading for the roof of the net before the keeper tipped it over the bar (shot 18).

The Stags made it 6-1 after 83 minutes with another stroke of luck. A good run from Afolayan into the area and he went down under a challenge from Hamer as he headed for the byline. The referee gave a penalty though replays show that Hamer got the ball. 17 year old Jimmy Knowles, who scored his first first team goal on Tuesday in the Leasing.com Trophy, stepped up to take the penalty and sent the keeper the wrong way for his first football league goal (shot 19). A stat from Paul Taylor is that Knowles became the Stags' youngest ever penalty scorer (at 17 years, 260 days, taking the record from Peter Morris who was 17 years, 327 days old when he scored from the penalty spot against Gillingham in September 1961).

After 86 minutes, a good turn on the byline by Afolayan and his cross along the byline was just about saved by the keeper (shot 20).

After 87 minutes, Knowles fired on the turn from the edge of the area but it was well wide of the right post (shot 21). At the other end a minute later, Missilou shot straight at Logan.

9 minutes were added on, mostly for the injury to Fage.

After 90+1 minutes, a good run from Khan to the edge of the area, he was dispossessed, but Knowles won the ball back, and fired in a low shot but didn’t get a good connection on it and it was an easy save (shot 22).

Sweeney was booked for a foul after 90+2 minutes.

Jonny Smith, who was probably Oldham’s best player, went on a good run and fired in a shot which was deflected for a corner after 90+3 minutes. The Stags broke straight to the far end from the corner with Khan running half of the length of the pitch and eventually Benning curled a shot with the outside of his left foot from the edge of the area inches wide of the angle of bar and post (shot 23). Very close.

On 90+5 minutes, a quick free kick from Gordon to Khan to Afolayan and Afolayan’s cross-shot was put behind for a corner by Wheater (shot 24). From the resulting corner, Shaughnessy fired goalwards with a side-foot shot and it was blocked (shot 25). A minute later, Afolayan’s shot from 12 yards was blocked by Stott, and moments later, Benning miscued a right-footed shot wide from 16 yards (shots 26 and 27).

After 90+8 minutes, Knowles teed up Gordon who sent in a rasping shot from the right which the keeper did well to parry away (shot 28). Then on 90+9 minutes, following a corner, Bishop shot low and wide of the left post from 25 yards (shot 29).

So it was a total of 29 chances created for the Stags, 6 of them taken.

Finally a word on the Oldham fans, 441 of them, who gave their side great support despite being pummelled for long periods of the game. At the end of the game, they were applauded for their support by Stags fans.

Man of the match: Nicky Maynard
