Their whole team doesn’t score goals.

It is enough if others are scoring and that is why he has been brought in

The striking thing for me on those stats is that he has consistently played a lot of football. He hasn’t been given that amount of game time for nothing and it tends to show a player popular with whoever has been picking the teams.

And shows he's been injury free mainly.

DKD over the same period of time:
22/23 11 goals, 4 assists (38 apps)
21/22 15 goals, 2 assists (46 apps)
20/21 10 goals, 5 assists (41 apps)
47 goals or assists in 125 apps
Almost identical goal records, Nichols far superior with assists. How's DKD done in front of goal this year?

Very similar players think they will stifle each others play if played together… Atkins and either Nichols or DkD for me unless we sign another ???

The only way in which those three players are similar is that their instinct is to come towards the ball. They will have to make sure one of them is a threat in behind. Apart from that, their skill sets are pretty different.

He’s only been getting approximately 15-20 mins a game so the stats aren’t really what they appear to be.

Well my time at Gillingham has come to an end, when I joined a year ago we were bottom of the football league and I have really enjoyed my time here helping us get back up the table. A big thank you to everyone associated with the club I wish you all the best in the future @gfcofficial

Absolutely delighted to be joining @mansfieldtownfc

Could play them as a 3 up front, Akins on right and DKD on left?

Not hugely prolific goalscorer but I've seen him play a few times and he's a.clever tidy player. Good calibre signing. I think he'll fit in well and play some decent football with DKD and Maris. Exciting.

We need another one.

I think the bit that interests me is how he fits into a Clough system. Bluntly, this management seem to either click with a player and bring the best out of them or not at all. They have wanted him for a, while so I presume he will replace Akins up front releasing him to become a utility player. If that works out then it is a great signing, but that is a, big if

We didn't think Reid was prolific for us but in the right system he has been dynamite so fingers crossed for Nichols

I doubt he is a replacement for Aikins, unless we change our style. He is a different type of player to Akins. I hope he does well, nevertheless.

I think it’s a great signing . At any other time it would be seen as a real coup .

Fans have just got obsessed with a real goal scoring number nine like Lee Gregory, Andy Cook or Jamie Read

We may still need 1 of those but if Clough is clever how he uses him he will be a big asset .

Hope there is 1 more to come . Personally not Lapslie as we have that well covered .

Just smash the winner in on Saturday Tom. We don’t expect much from our strikers but this will do for starters.

Well Akins played the most games as a right winger before joining us and DKD was played as a left winger. Their natural positions (not saying they can't play anywhere else.

on the not the top 20 podcast deadline day link Musings posted earlier they had the following to say about it.

Tom Nichols (CF) - [Gillingham - Mansfield] - Undisclosed

On the one hand, Nichols is one of the few genuine ‘deep-lying forwards’ to exist and survive in the modern EFL. Teddy Sheringham for the lower league crowd. Clever movement, excellent football IQ and the deft touch to knit things together in the final third. Something we can all get behind.

On the other hand, with Davis Keillor-Dunn already occupying the ‘diminutive, withdrawn striker’ role, it’s not instantly obvious whether Nichols’ value will expose itself. A goalscorer he is not: the only time he’s ever scored more than 10 non-penalty goals in a season was 2014/15. Perhaps he could play at the tip of a diamond, with Keillor-Dunn plus one? We shall see.

VERDICT: NOT AN OBVIOUS NEED
