Hope he hits the ground running and is a big success here. Maybe not the profile of striker I’d have particularly targeted as discussed today, but Nichols is no mug and getting in to double figures 5 times shows that so fingers crossed the style of play just suits him and it all just clicks

He scored in his first 3 games at Gillingham… one will do me on Saturday!

I imagine he will play next too Akins or behind the strikers in the diamond, or if we go to the 4231 again I think he could play anywhere in the 3. I would imagine the main role he will play is next too Akins in the diamond with DKD behind.

But the question is "was there a fee?" - we haven't disclosed if there's anything to disclose...

Are we not playing Keillor-Dunn or Maris anymore?

I have no idea what Clough's plan's are, that is just how I imagine it. There will be a lot of rotation so everyone will play their fair share and I am sure if a few injuries come up no one will be complaining at the multiple options we have

Akins has played every position bar goalkeeper (I'm sure Broomo or Bear said he had, could be wrong if either can confirm or deny) in his career

Yeah let’s pretend clubs don’t usually say it’s a undisclosed fee if one has been paid for the bants.

They do usually say undisclosed, they also usually say "free transfer" as well, neither said either. So it's super undisclosed.

I’m sure I’ve read somewhere on a Gillingham fans page that Gillingham stated it was for an undisclosed fee. I’ve had a quick trawl back through but can’t see it but I’m sure it’s there somewhere.

I’m thinking Swan up top with Nichols behind. DKD is at the tip of the diamond. One of the reasons Swan has been struggling is because no one is utilising the runs he is making. I think Nichols will help with that. I like Akins but he’s been off form for the last 2 months. Nichols will provide competition and rest for Akins. Swan is quality, with game time I think he’ll come good for us, especially if he gets the service he’s been lacking thus far.

Tom Nichols (CF) - [Gillingham - Mansfield] - Undisclosed

On the one hand, Nichols is one of the few genuine ‘deep-lying forwards’ to exist and survive in the modern EFL. Teddy Sheringham for the lower league crowd. Clever movement, excellent football IQ and the deft touch to knit things together in the final third. Something we can all get behind.

On the other hand, with Davis Keillor-Dunn already occupying the ‘diminutive, withdrawn striker’ role, it’s not instantly obvious whether Nichols’ value will expose itself. A goalscorer he is not: the only time he’s ever scored more than 10 non-penalty goals in a season was 2014/15. Perhaps he could play at the tip of a diamond, with Keillor-Dunn plus one? We shall see.

VERDICT: NOT AN OBVIOUS NEED

I'm so glad Clough is our manager, and actually had a career in it...
He will be judged (I'm sure) on how the rest of the season goes.
Let's just get behind them, and help them to that Top 3 finish!

Well not exactly, my point is not that we didn't need Nichols, I think he is an excellent signing, but that more important for us was a No 9 who I believe we have tried/still trying to sign.
