very nice gesture. they actually wrapped it up in his P45 but Alan tore through it, assuming it was decorative wrapping paper.

I think he was asked to do it as a one off as cover for someone and never looked back. I might be wrong though. I think he’s a bit cringe and there’s far better out there I’m sure but fair play for doing it for 30 years, for free!

As always this twerp takes things out of context and jumps at the chance to put in the boot.
What is so 'weapons grade meltish' about asking how Alan got the job in the first place... it's been 30 clucking years!!
It was just a civil question, no add ons about style, delivery etc which some other folk carp on about. But hey feel free to take a swing you utter bellthronk.

Thanks for your measured response FT, it helps to get one for a valid question rather than some idiot down South wading in with the boot at what in his warped mind he percieves as a dig at Alan.

Just for the record my only niggle with Al is the away following pause. To begin with this season he stopped doing it, but slowly the pause for the clap's getting longer and longer. TBH I never clap the away following figure.

As I've said before, Alan is an institution and we should all be glad he's ours. At lower league clubs it's the little differences that make it special. I remember Orient's announcer doing "goooooooooooooooooool!" every time they scored, Lincoln have the bloke with the rattle and their air-raid siren thing. Alan is the voice of Field Mill and always will be for me. People have called for a more 'professional' announcer (whatever that means for a voluntary position such as this) but I for one don't want some homogenous robot or youngster with too much enthusiasm. Great clubs are built on traditions and in Alan, we have one. The family feeling at football clubs comes from old faces: in the stands and backstage. Long may it continue. Congrats Alan!

30 years at a single organisation in any job is commendable, let alone doing announcements giving up Saturdays. Congratulations Alan.

My favourite was when Rrrrrrrrrriche Barker scored.

I also recall in the late 90s he read a message over the tannoy and the crowd fell silent listening to it. It concluded with something along the lines of 'after 40 years of marriage I'm leaving you, oh and happy birthday'.
You've got to go there and come back, to know where you've been.

I also remember the mid game announcement of:

"Can (such as such) please leave the ground immediately, as your wife has gone into labour"

I love the ones he does when he says, 'Will the owner of car reg No XYZ123 please move your car immediately as it's causing an obstruction in the retail park, it will be towed away in 2 minutes'.

Everyone looks and laughs as an away supporter scuttles off to save his pride and joy

Sporting quotes over the years

Some people are on the pitch, they think it’s all over; it is now.
-Kenneth Wolstenholme, before and after England went 4-2 up against West Germany

We had a good team on paper. Unfortunately, the game was played on grass.
-The indomitable Brian Clough

If you want to be the best, you have to do the things that other people aren't willing to do.
-Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps

We’ll still be happy if we lose. It’s on at the same time as the Beer Festival.’ – Noel O’ Mahony, Cork City boss before the game in Munich

‘I would not say he (David Ginola) is the best left winger in the Premiership, but there are none better.’ – Ron Atkinson

‘Ah, isn’t that nice, the wife of the Cambridge president is kissing the cox of the Oxford crew.’ – Harry Carpenter (BBC TV Boat Race 1977)

‘Julian Dicks is everywhere. It’s like they’ve got eleven Dicks on the field.’ – Metro Radio

For those of you watching in black and white, Spurs are in the all-yellow strip.’ – John Motson

‘There goes Juantorena down the back straight, opening his legs and showing his class.’ – David Coleman at The Montreal Olympics

‘And for those of you who watched the last programme (Fanny and Johnny Craddock), I hope all your doughnuts turn out like Fanny’s.’ – David Coleman at the start of Match of The Day

One of the reasons Arnie (Arnold Palmer) is playing so well is that, before each tee-shot, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them – Oh my God, what have I just said?’ – USTV commentator

And now our own Alan the announcer

I can't believe he's 59. He's looked like that ever since I can remember.

Fair play to him for doing it for free, surely the club should pay him something?
