The passing of a Stags stalwart

Postby oldnic » Sat Aug 25, 2018 8:20 am

Last night Big John, a Stags supporter for ever passed away. He knew what was going to happen but still purchased a season ticket. Great friend to my son, followed his team home and away. I dont even remember his surname but a lot of you who follow the Stags to away matches will know and miss him. A lovely bloke. I dont know any more than this. Hopefully someone will post with more information.

A bit of sad news

Postby part time pete » Sat Aug 25, 2018 10:16 am

John Lambley, one of the guys I take to away games, passed away peacefully last evening at Ashgate Hospice with his close family around him.

His final game was last Saturday against Colchester.

He had been in the hospice for the last four weeks but he still has attended all the home games, including friendlies, this season, with the final two games versus Accrington and Colchester in a wheelchair.

John had been supporting the stags for over seventy years and I have been taking him to away games for the last five years. He has missed very few games in those five years and only missed a couple last season due to ill health around the New Year period.

He was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer in July 2017 but refused any form of surgery, kemo or radiotherapy because he didn’t want any side effects keeping him away from games. He kept saying he was fit and in no pain so why take treatment with all the side effects for perhaps a month or two more of agony. He even bought this year’s season ticket when the doctors effectively told him it was a waste of money.

In the end he was only bedridden since Thursday and on Wednesday he was still saying that he was going to Macclesfield today as we had got wheelchair tickets. However, on Friday morning when I saw him he admitted he didn’t have the strength to go to the match and I knew then it wouldn’t be long.

I would finally like to thank the club especially Ann in the ticket office for arranging wheelchair tickets this season and Carolyn Radford for surprisingly arranging John and myself to attend 1861 suite for the Accrington game. She had a photo taken with him which was put in the programme for the Colchester game which he very much appreciated.

Sounds like a great guy, thoughts with his family and friends, well done to the club and thoughts and respect to you too Pete. If there's a time to go, then going with your last match seeing us concede a 96th minute equaliser seems as fitting a way for a Stags fan than any other.

That’s very sad. My sympathies and condolences to his friends and family. Nice touch by Carolyn that shows me that the club is in the right hands.

Don't know the guy, but I have the greatest respect for him.

My condolences to his family and friends.

I was a voluntary worker for Ashgate Hospice for several years, and if it has helped people like John it's very worthwhile.

Come on guys win today for John.

Very sad news. I knew when I saw John at a youth team game at Retford earlier this season that he did not have many games to go. He had lost a lot of weight over the summer. R.I.P. John. I'll miss you sat behind me at Field Mill and our banter about Matt Rhead and you asking me the ref's name in the 2nd half. I'll still hear you shout "Sit Down" whenever I have to jump up to see a possible goal. Another Stags fan who has gone to the Great Field Mill In The Sky.

Thanks to Carolyn and the club for making a fuss of him for his last few games.

Knew him a little back in the day and always found him to be an easy going nice guy.

My condolences go out to his family and friends.

Field Mill is a lesser place without him.

RIP John

The stags (and indeed the world) cant afford to loose such a man. Great shame, lovely to know we are the kind of club that treasures these people.

Crikey. I had the pleasure to travel to a few games with John in pete's car and knew he poorly with the cancer. Terrificly brave chap who just got on with things.

RIP John.

Very, very sad news indeed.

I got to know him as he used to come into TSB in Shirebrook where I worked during the 80’s.

We’d sit on the enquiry bay or in an office for ages just talking about Stags, happy memories.

He sat just in front of me in the Upper West and it was clear recently that he was in poor health but what a warrior, Stags right to the end.

Will miss you mate, RIP John x

John deserves the tribute being given to him and his family. My son loved him, in the same way as he does his own family. I saw John a couple of times in the weeks before he died. All he talked about was the Stags. Courage beyond belief. R I P John
