Accrington EFL Cup preview

Postby Sweden Stag » Mon Aug 13, 2018 12:49 pm

After gaining four points from their first League Two fixtures this season so far, the Stags now have a break from League Two action. And this is for League Cup action, and the draw paired the Stags with last season’s League Two Champions, Accrington Stanley. An Accrington side which last Saturday gained their first points above the basement thanks to a 2-1 away victory at Bristol Rovers, the side which the Stags booted out of the FL for one season on the final day of the Stags’ FL comeback campaign in 2013-14. The Accrington victory at Bristol Rovers was their first above the basement since one achieved by the old Accrington club away to the old Newport County club on Good Friday April 15, 1960, during a dismal campaign in which the old Accrington club were relegated together with the Stags.

The Stags have yet to beat the current Accrington club in League fixtures. Fourteen games since the 2006-07 season have seen just four draws and, incredibly enough, ten odd-goal defeats out of ten, the latest by the only goal of the game on Good Friday, March 30, 2018 at One Call Stadium.

In the FL, Accrington’s promotion was long overdue. On two previous occasions, Accrington had just missed out, in 2010-11 via a playoff defeat against Stevenage, and in 2015-16, when a goal-less home draw against Stevenage and a last-gasp stoppage-time Bristol Rovers winner against Dagenham & Redbridge was enough to condemn Accrington to the playoff lottery.

Now, in League One, Accrington have earned the right to face sides like Charlton and Sunderland, latter a PL side two seasons ago, while the old Accrington club in their 1959-60 relegation campaign turned up against the likes of QPR, Southampton and Norwich.

One cannot mention Accrington without John Coleman, who definitely has worked wonders at Accrington. When he arrived for his first Accrington spell way back in 1999, he managed to steer the club from way below the Conference into League Two. Proof of making the best out of very limited financial resources. Their gates have mostly been very low, in two 2014-15 home games (against Hartlepool and Burton) even below the four-figure mark.

During the season of the Stags’ FL return, Accrington endured their worst-ever start for a long time, even worse than in the 1961-62 season that ended up in heartbreak , speak resignation from FL in March 1962. That term, Accrington did not win any of their first twelve games, but had six points after six games in September 1961 following a later expunged goal-less home draw against the Stags.

Two seasons ago, both League games between the sides ended in draws. At Accrington, the sides played out a 1-1 draw after a superb free-kick by Chris Clements had put the Stags in front. Even more classic, to print the least, was the game at One Call Stadium on Valentines’ Day evening February 14, 2017, in front of 3226, among them just 58 Accrington fans, the lowest number of away fans brought to Mansfield for FL fixtures last season.

Those who went from both sides witnessed a crazy game big style with penalties for each side as well as fabulous goals in an epic 4-4 draw. Yoann Arquin, who in Autumn 2016 scored five goals for Syrianska FC from Södertälje in Sweden’s equivalent to Championship (Superettan) had the final say on the scoresheet by a cracking strike in the final minute of normal time.

Since the return to League Two, the Stags have failed to progress from the first round of the League Cup in each of the five campaigns upon the return. Their opponents had been Tranmere, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Blackburn and Rochdale, while Accrington two seasons ago reached the third round after beating Bradford City on penalties, then Burnley at home in the final minute of extra-time before going out against West Ham in the final minute of normal time.

Although the Stags have failed to beat the current Accrington side in League fixtures, they did so in the FA Cup first round during the 2006-07 season thanks to a Richie Barker penalty just before half-time. And one Accrington player featuring then, Andy Mangan, has now returned to Accy for a third spell, following spells at sides like Forest Green, Wrexham and Fleetwood. And out of the Stags players featuring way back in November 2006, three are still around and have played in the FL so far this term: Jake Buxton (unused sub then) for Burton, Johnny Mullins for Cheltenham and Giles Coke for Oldham. Meanwhile, Andy Todd, Accrington player in 2006, played around a dozen games for the Stags during their Conference campaigns a while back in time.

The old Accrington Stanley side were founder members of the old Division 3 (N) in 1921. Before that, another Accrington club had figured in the league. Accrington FC, nicknamed The Owd Reds, founded in 1878, were in fact founder members of the Football League in 1888, playing at the highest level for five seasons, then being relegated after test matches and then even failed to get election to the then new second level.

The current Accrington club was formed in 1968, then called Accrington Stanley 1968, and entered the Lancashire Combination in 1970-71, finishing fifth on 35 points after 30 games, the record courtesy of the 1971-72 Rothman's Football Yearbook being Played 30, Won 15, Drawn 5, Lost 10, GF 65, GA 52, Points 35. And after three seasons in the Conf, Accrington were crowned Champions in the 2005-06 season. Oddly enough, Oxford United, who were elected upon Accrington's resignation in 1962, were relegated to the Conf aka Blue Square Premier upon the Accrington league return, but returned in 2010.

Played for both sides (until 1961-62): Harry Broome, Jimmy Heathcote, Wally Hunt, John Jepson, Tom Lockie, George Mee, Stanley Mercer, Jacob Parsons, Jazz Rattray, William White. Current Accrington club: James Alabi, Rory Boulding, James Caton, Billy Kee, Louis Moult, Nicky Hunt, Andy Owens, Andy Todd, Laurence Wilson.

Stats of games against the old Accrington club:

Home games: P 19, W 12, D 4, L 3, GF 40, GA 19
Away games: P 19, W 4, D 6, L 9, GF 25, GA 38
