Just a slight alteration Martin it was Otis Khan not Walker. Walker has managed just the one shot on target in all games so far which the keeper easily saved tonight.
"I spotted a bit of space in behind and Mellis found me with a really good pass. I turned and had a shot, but luckily it came off to CJ who slotted Mal in. That's what we're about really - finding those spaces. We have the players who can play the ball into those areas.

Liam Palmer isn’t Carlton Palmer’s son, he’s a lad from Worksop. :coys:

thanks. My mistake on Liam Palmer. Caught out by fake news on google search. Amended.

thanks, yes it was Khan's shot, not Walker. My mistake, thought it was Walker. Amended.

I saw the formation as more of a 2-1 up top rather than a flat two. Khan and Macca (to start, later Mellis) behind Walker.

You could see when they lined up from Wednesday goal kicks that Khan was alongside Walker.

That was just to stop them playing out though. Walker, Khan and Mellis were guarding a CB each.

at different times, the formation looks different, that's always the case. Khan was often up front with Walker, at other times he wasn't. Khan tended to be further forward than MacDonald, and then Mellis.

Formation last night was:
Walker
Khan Mcdonald
Benning Mellis Bishop Hamilton
Pearce Preston White
Logan

Mellis and Macca switched about 20 mins in.

Dean and I debated this during commentary. On balance overall we felt Khan was further forward than you suggest, but there was fluidity. You could also argue that Bishop was deeper than Mellis. And anyway, Rob doesn't like it when the formation is broken down too far

Formations always make me laugh, its still 11 stags players on the pitch and they don't ever stay in one position ever, imagine if they did it would be hilarious  "Mal why didn't you chase that ball down over there" "It was on the right, I'm left back pal"

that is true. It is only ever intended to be an indicator, which I think is useful during commentary for people listening at home.

Agreed. In view of it being a fluid game I'd just call it 4-5-1 rather than attempt some sort of micro-analysis.

Ist time ever we have played a 3-1-3-1-1 formation?
White Preston Pearce
Bishop
Hamilton mellis Benning
MacDonald
Khan
Walker

I’d have it as 3-2-1-1-1-1-1 with Hamilton and Benning in a line in front of the back three and behind Bishop.

Surely Benning was playing slightly more advanced than Hamilton, and White further forward than Preston and Pearce but not as much as Benning? So more like 2-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1?

Of all the formations on this thread, that’s the one we definitely didn’t play!

We lined up four at the back for kickoff, and Walker seems to be the only one who is agreed to be at the front...

The thing that stood out for me was Macca’s performance last night. I was very critical of him last season, but he looked a different player. He played it short and easy more often than not, rather than the 60 yard cross field glory balls he insisted on playing last season. He looked like a midfielder which he never did last season. I assume Flitcroft has put a lot of effort in with him close season to see such an increase in decision making.

1-2-2-1-2-1-1 for me.

generally speaking formations are used when defending.
