Matlock Town v Stags U21's

Postby Dan » Tue Jul 17, 2018 10:19 pm

Drew 1-1 tonight. Hit the post 3 times (may have been more). Their goal was superb. Sam Wilson came out to head it clear, it landed at their lads feet on the half way line & he lobbed it high over Sam and into the goal. No blame attached to Sam it was just a superb finish. Our goal was superbly taken by Zayn Hakeem in the last few minutes. He burst clear one on one with their keeper & flashed a left foot drive into the roof of the goal.

They had loads of trialists come on who they didn't name, but one of them was Adam Smith who used to play for us.

The most notable thing of the night was Paul Anderson playing for what was basically our Under 21's. The rest of the team had numbers 1-11 on their shirts but Ando had 14 on. Read into that what you will.

A lovely night in one of the most picturesque settings for a football ground spent with top people.

Anderson has not played any of the pre-season games to date due to injury, so needs minutes. Seems sensible.

Well done to the lads. Couldn't go as work came first. Causeway Lane is as you say a lovely setting Dan. I think t'sheep play there soon so I may go over for a laugh.

Are Jake Green (Matt's bro) and Callum Lloyd still there?

Did Keaton Ward play, if so how did he do?

Jake Green played the 2nd half Mark at left back but he was listed as a trialist. He has not signed on for this season yet. The team sheet is below.

Keaton Ward played the whole game and did fine. Matlock were the stronger side in the first half and took the lead when Jordan Chappell (ex Sheffield United, Torquay United, Chester) chipped Sam Wilson from 40 yards. However Nyle Blake showed a good burst of pace just before half time to break through on the right but his shot hit the post. Matlock made a lot of changes at half time and brought on their younger players and trialists. It was then more of an even game. Keaton Ward hit the post with a shot from outside the area and Zayn Hakeem (?) also hit the post. Matlock had a few chances and goalmouth scrambles. Zayn Hakeem then burst through at the end and showed good pace and power to shoot past the Matlock keeper with his left foot for a well deserved equalizer. Zayn has filled out a bit and looks stronger.

Matlock play Derby County at home on Thursday.

To be honest very few if any would make the starting eleven first team at the moment on that showing. It finished 1-1 with a late Hakeem equaliser but only after Matlock changed their first team and put on a whole lot of kids on second half. In the first half Matlock’s men out bullied our youngsters who tried to play Tippy tappy football on a pitch that wasn’t a bowling green.

As said a good evening in pleasant company.

thanks, my mistake. The point remains that he is behind other players in minutes played (did not play at Vitoria and Bradford), and was never likely to start against Derby.

I believe he has not been offered a new contract as well as AJ George, Louis Danquah and Kieran Harrison.
