STAGSNET`S STATISTICAL PREVIEW
20th March 2003 21:00

The teams first met in the Stags inaugural league season in the old div 3 (S) and played each other in all of the Stags div 3 (S) season, the last being the first post-World War II season in 1946-47 when the Bluebirds were run-away winners, nine points above QPR and the Stags finishing bottom on worse goal-average than Norwich City, who were relegated from the old division 2 in 1938-39. In that 1946-47 season, Mansfield suffered the biggest-ever defeat at Cardiff, a 0-5 on March 15, 1947, this being the last of seven consecutive league defeats, the worst-ever run of Stags league defeats.
When the Stags kicked off their first-ever league season, Cardiff had just been relegated from the old 2nd division, only four years after being the only Welsh side so far to lift the FA Cup. The first game at the Mill was played on February 27, 1932 when Cardiff won 2-1. The biggest Stags win is 3-0 which has happened on three occasions (Dec. 25, 1937, Oct. 19, 1991 and May 8, 1999) all at Field Mill. And the latest game (before this season) between the two teams was won by the Stags 2-1 on April 24, 2001, scorers Bradley and Greenacre, the latter converting a penalty. Only once have the Stags won on Cardiff soil, and that was a 2-1 as recently as December 21, 1996. When the Stags played their so far only season in the old second division in 1977-78, Cardiff was one of the opponents. Both games were drawn, a 1-1 at Cardiff on September 17, 1977 and a 2-2 at Field Mill on February 11, 1978, a game which was to be the last for Peter Morris as Stags manager (then left for Newcastle). Cardiff's biggest win at the Mill was 4-1 on September 13, 1975 in the old third division and that defeat was the then biggest Stags home one since October 29, 1971 when Bournemouth won 5-0 during the Stags no-goal home spell in the 1971-72 season. The teams have also met in the league Cup. First games in the 1961-62 when Cardiff when through after a replay, and in 1990-91, when just relegated Cardiff won over two legs. Earlier this season Cardiff were lucky to win 1-0 at Field Mill. And the very first Stags league point at Cardiff was gained thanks to a goal-less draw on April 29, 1939 at the end of the last pre-World-War II league campaign.

Played for both sides: Phil Stant (transferred to Cardiff from the Stags during the 1992-93 season), Chris Greenacre (playing eleven games, scoring two goals for the Bluebirds in the 1997-98 campaign).
Both players playing a vital goal-scoring part in the Stags two latest auto promo seasons.
