Stags offer chance to ex-Bury skipper

Mansfield Town are taking a close look at former Bury captain Nathan Cameron during their week-long training camp in Portugal this week. The dominant 26-year-old centre half has been recovering from knee injury problems and was released by the Shakers at the end of the season.

Still short on defenders, Mansfield manager David Flitcroft is a big fan of Cameron and would love to offer him a contract if he can prove he will play games next season.

He said: “Cam was my skipper when we got promoted with Bury. He led it fantastically well. He is a great sort. “He is a great captain and a great leader. He is a great communicator and a great talker on and off the pitch.

“He wanted to come out here with us. He knew what our camps were about. He will certainly add value on the camp and we’ll see how he progresses.”

He added: “He had an injury problem last season. We have got to make sure with our staff that they all know the dynamics of Cam - what he can do, what he can’t do, what he needs to do and see if we can build a training programme to support that injury he’s had and get him playing lots of games for us - if possible.

“We are looking at him in massive detail in every session he does, seeing where his measurements are, and seeing how he reacts with this group of players.

“Having worked with him before I know his character. I know what type of lad he is. The camp has been better for having Nathan Cameron in it.”

Now it is up to the player to prove his fitness to win a contract. “We have left is open-ended,” said Flitcroft. “I know his agent really well - he is an ex-player - very sensible and very responsible for his players.

“He can see what we are doing here and offering an opportunity that we can get Cameron playing lots of games for us next season. “I have allowed the staff who don’t know him great contact time - 24 hours a day - to make sure we are right in potentially offering him a contract.

“That’s an assessment and valuation after every single session and seeing how the injury reacts. I am very thorough in my work and we are diligent in what we do.”
